Keep The Change: ‘Ruaaaaaaaal!’

This is “Keep the Change,” a new feature by Nick “The Beer Man” Staskin. Nick is a beer man at Citizens Bank Park; he’ll post weekly with observations from the fans at the park, trying to get a good sense of where the Phillies stand in the eyes of those who most matter.

BeermanHello all! Being a Beer man at Citizens Bank Park, I hear a lot while roaming the stands. The boys here at Phillies Nation have given me the opportunity to share with you what other fans are talking, ranting and screaming about on a weekly basis.

We will touch on some of the good stuff, some of the bad stuff and well some of the ridiculous stuff.

Raul Ibanez

I can’t remember one player who has won over the fans in a shorter time than RAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUULLLLLLLL.

Since my sections are primarily in left field, it is hard to not hear the love that is crying out for the Phillies new leftfielder. Ibanez is off to a torrid pace and has given the fans something to talk about.

Going into this weekend’s series against the Mets, Ibanez is first or second in every offensive category on the team…including stolen bases. The excitement behind the new slugger is certainly justified. However, the thing fans need to remember is that Pat Burrell was notorious for putting up some big Aprils.

If Ibanez can contribute throughout the year and give some well needed protection behind Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth in the 5 and 6 spot in the lineup, the Phillies should have no problem topping last year’s run total of 799.

One last tidbit: Ibanez projected totals through April: .359 BA, 57 HR, 138 RBI.
Burrell’s projected totals through last April: .326 BA, 48 HR, 144 RBI.

The Pitching

Comeback wins can definitely make you forget that the team has an ERA floundering close to 6.00. While the wins have been exciting, the Phils’ pitching has been anything but.

The general consensus seems to be that eventually Cole Hamels will stop getting unlucky, settle down and stop leaving games with freak injuries. Brett Myers has already started to turn it around and keep the ball in the stadium and Jamie Moyer is what he is. Joe Blanton and Chan Ho Park? The fans aren’t as optimistic. People seem to think it is only a matter of time before J.A. Happ is in the rotation…but who will he replace? That is anybody’s guess. Blanton and Park have been almost equally awful; with Blanton being a tad worse as his WHIP is an awful 1.97.

Best Thing in the Seats This Week?

A sign in section 141 on Wednesday night that a 20-something year old man was holding:

“Thank You Pat…But Rual Is All That”

I’m not sure who Rual is…but the phans sure did get a good laugh out if it…

Thank you “Beer Man” for your column. You are a welcome addition here. When I started reading it and noted “roaming the stands” I thought to myself not another Tom McCarthy type looking for stories with fans and ignoring the game on the field. However, after finish reading, I do sensed your knowledge and sharp perspective on the current situation with the team. Looking forward to your next column.

Honestly, I find it hard to believe the majority of the fans think J.A. Happ will be in the rotation soon… most of them don’t even know who he is.

great idea for a new column. and to joshb: most of the fans knew who lou marson was in his first home game this season, of course they know happ.

Gonna have to disagree with you there Josh. Happ was part of a much publicized fight for the fifth and because of that as well as his contributions last year, specifically starting July 4th against Johan, a lot of people know who he is and what he has brought to the table so far.

Josh, you obviously are not a regular on this site. anyone who is, not only knows who Happ is, but what he can bring to the table as a starter, thanks to the day to day reporting on this site, through ST. Beerman, great column…

Btw…. Pats numbers from april of last year are actually better than Ibanez April this year.

Pat has 8 more RBI’s, 1 more HR and his GDIP is half of Raul.

Where Raul is better… he strikes out less only 10x compared to PB 18.
    And he’s faster…He has 3 SB’s and a Triple.. Pat had 0′s in both..
Also factor that speed into defensive impact…

The true test here is if Ibanez can maintain his performance through the coming months..

People are dumb in general.. (maybe “dumb” is too strong.. but “out of touch”)..

My uncle was at the game on Tuesday.. and there were guys behind him wondering why the fans were Booing Raul…

    Raaaauuuuuuuuuuuuuul…

So not all fans are as into the team and stuff as we think.. every REAL fan knows who Happ is though

I agree with Maverick. how quickly people forget what agreat April and May Burrell had. In fact it was better a the plate than Rauuuulllll. The tre tes will be if he can keep a similar pace the whole season. Thats when we’ll know if the trade paid off

I think the problem is that people remembered what a great April and May Burrell had, and people thought he was better than he really was…

Burrell is a lifetime .250 hitter, with some pop, and some slumps

I doubt Ibanez is going to hit .350 all season, but he’s a more consistent hitter than Burrell ever was or ever will be.

People getting Ibanez tattoos and stuff should relax a little bit, maybe rethink that whole thing, but I think most fans are just enjoying a Free-Agent having a nice debut for the Phillies

Thanks for the feedback guys. I was one of Pat’s biggest supporters and was very critical of the Raul signing, but before I jump on the Raul MVP Bandwagon I want to see the May-June-July stats…Pat was Mr. April so all this is fresh in my mind….

I hope fans know who Happ is…otherwise they haven’t been watching the games as he has made numerous appearances out of the pen as well.

Raulllllllllllll is spelled wrong in the title. Or is that a joke from that fan who held it up wrong?

The majority of our “fans” do not read this site. I went to the final game of the season last year, and barely anyone around me had a clue as to who any of the minor league players were. I agree that a lot of people know who Happ and Marson are, but the majority? Unlikely.

Keith, aren’t beerman supposed to make noises? Or should they try and sell beer as mimes?

I would agree most fans don’t read this site, but yes a majority of the fans know who JA Happ is because he has pitched in a few games and had what about 8 starts last year. I am not a huge Minor league follower, except what I hear on here, so I may not know some of the guys when they bring them up in september, but I know the 25 man rooster

The setting is right for a lot of offense this coming series. All of the starting pitchers have high ERA’s Chan Ho starts tonight, Jamie on Saturday and JB on Sunday – JB has been pummelled all year long so far and it does not appear to be getting any better.
The Muts do not fare much better – Pelfrey, Perez and John Maine all with ERA’s substantially over 5.
Fireworks coming early and dont forget, Scott Eyre will surely make an appearance.
