All of the Phillies full-season minor league affiliates started last night. Here’s what happened:
- Kyle Kendrick received the opening night start for the IronPigs, lasting four innings and surrendering two runs on four hits and three walks. None of the runs were earned, however, so his ERA stands at 0.00. John Ennis gave up five runs and recorded one out, however, and the Pigs lost to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 11-3. Dave Borkowski, Scott Nestor and Jake Woods all gave up runs, while Mike Koplove had a perfect ninth. Jason Donald went 1-for-4, while John Mayberry Jr. reached base twice and scored both times.
- The Reading Phillies lost 6-5 in 10 innings to Harrisburg. Joe Bisenius only recorded one out, but he gave up just two runs. Sergio Escalona also had a tough time, giving up a run on four hits in two frames. Tyson Brummett started and went six innings, giving up two runs on five hits. Offensively, the R-Phils barely have a notable prospect – Brad Harman is one, and he went 2-for-6.
- Kyle Drabek pitched well enough in his first start for the Clearwater Threshers. He lasted five innings, giving up two runs on two hits and three walks while striking out seven. Thanks to good relief pitching (including top prospect Michael Schwimmer), the Threshers won 5-2. Shortstop Freddy Galvis, known for his defensive skill, went 2-for-4 with a home run. Dominic Brown hit a double, and Matthew Rizzoti had three hits, including a double.
- And the Lakewood Blue Claws lost their opener, 2-1. Tyler Cloyd pitched a nice six innings, giving up two runs on six hits. The offense struggled – they only manufactured two hits. Zach Collier hit a double but struck out three times; Anthony Gose hit an RBI single and walked.

Its nice to see Drabek is responding well to his TJ. Hopefully all goes well, fingers crossed!

I expect Drabek to be at AA Reading by the end of the year, still 2-3 years away I think. Guys like Brown and Michael Taylor should be at Reading by the end of the year as well. Donald needs to play a whole season for AAA AT THIRD BASE…apparently tyson brummet could turn into something there, as Tim featured him last year and hes developed seemingly well. I dont know anything about Schwimmer though, late inning reliver I take it?

Thanks for the post. I’m really watching the minors this year, it seems like this is the best bunch of prospects the Phils have had in years.

I didn’t know that Michael Taylor and Quintin Berry (both in Reading) weren’t considered top prospects anymore, what happened to them?

If Drabek’s 3 years away then he’s in trouble, the guys on the fast-track so expect the Sarmy treatment since the guys can flat out fan guys.

NJ he’s also in his first year back fully healthy since his Tommy John, you don’t want to push a guy that is a year back from Tommy John.

Yeah I see the point on that I just don’t see the organisation not moving him up if he continues to have success. I know we have a habbit of keeping pitching prospects on a specific path but this guys destined to have an impact on the back-end of the pen to start his career with his stuff.

Taylor certainly is a top prospect. Berry and Harman are almost fringe prospects at this point.

Completely overlooked Taylor. He went 0-for-4 for Reading. Berry (who is fringe if best with Harman) went 1-for-5.
