No one wanted Jenkins’ contract. Why pay $8 million for Jenkins when a much better player like Abreu is only getting $5 mil a year on the free agent market? Also, Jenkins is no longer any good.

Wily Mo Pena, if he’s healthy enough to swing a bat that’s extra base power off the bench if he can adapt thats worth a 1 year punt. Personally I’d be taking a look at Frank Thomas right now, we need a bat not a fielder on the bench.

Amen to that. I’m amazed that people would rather have Miguel Cairo than take a shot with Sheffield. Are people honestly worried that he’ll come in here and teach all the Phillies to start being lazy and to hate each other? If he become a problem, they’ll just cut him.

The guy is 40 and has lost his juice (figuratively speaking, of course… I wouldn’t want to accuse anyone). Add to that his arrogance and I say we pass on Sheff. He has been on a steady decline: down from hitting 1 HR every 17 AB’s in 2005 to 1 HR every 22 AB’s in 2008. He’s a DH… not a fielder. A professional hitter that has always relied on bat speed (not mechanics)… that speed is not quite what it was a few years ago. He might be able to help an AL team as a regular DH. We don’t need a guy that is going to bring that type of baggage… he’s never been a “role player” so nobody knows how he’s going to react. He’s not a good fit for this team.

I’m with Megary and Don M, bring in the Sheff! There is no doubt that this guy is an ass-clown, but he’s a talented ass-clown. It’s a low-risk maneuver. If he doesn’t work out, then just cut him. Isn’t it worth a shot?

Matt Stairs can’t do anything BUT hit HRs, and he’s still here.. I wouldn’t mind having a legit HR threat from both sides of the plate, late in close games.

Damn you Beale, I can see where you think I’m misreading the clubhouse. It’s still a loose clubhouse, but I think it’s much more serious (read determined) than ever. Target on the back and all.

Career numbers don’t get my goat with Sheff. He CAN’T HIT. He has home run power. Okay. Big whoop. The Phils need a guy who hit home runs and do a lot more. That’s why they got rid of Jenkins.
