I must say Howard and Ibanez for the amount of time they’ve been playing in Spring Training, virtually every game they’ve been able to maintain that .300 average. Bruntlett playing in probably the most games of everyone has really done a great job, I know it’s been said a few times. I just hope they’re able to maintain and don’t hit a slump come April 9.

Moyer has given up nine runs in four innings… looks like we might be slotting Happ into the rotation sooner than we thought…

4.0 IP, 11 Hits, 9 ER, 2 BB, 3 SO, 3 HR, … uhmm maybe he was just working on a certain pitch, that he won’t be using in the regular season?

Or it could be a case of the umpire not giving moyer the calls he needs to be effective, some umps refuse to be limber on the outer half of the plate which works against moyer which is why on a occassion he throws a dud. But his spring numbers are worrying me about what’s going on if it’s just that he’s working on some pitches or if this is the product of being seen enough to be less effective

Moyer is done as Ozuna pinch hitted for him. Jamie Moyer: 4IP, 11H, 9R(all earned), 2BB, 3K, 3HR. His record currently in spt is 1-2 and might go to 1-3. His final spring training era is 8.27. This is why I think the phils should’ve given him a 1 year deal and go year by year because he could retire any moment. As soon as moyer goes out Happ, Carrasco, Kendrick all battle for that spot.

I said this yesterday how i believe Happ will take Moyers spot in the rotation sometime this year and i was all of sudden shot down by someone. the 46 year old is getting blasted this spring, never understood why they even brought him back, when they could of gotten derek lowe?
We shall see

Utley gets replaced by ozuna. Utley 0for2, 2runs, HBP and reached on error. Also had a part in the phils turning a dp. Condrey pitched in 5th

This start is awful for Moyer’s confidence because his next start counts because it’s on Tuesday at home vs Braves. 7:05pm start moyer vs jair jurrigens. Monday is day off so second game of the new season and moyers confidence is down. Hopefully with his experience he can bury this game and give a solid start on Tuesday.

Oh by the way folks. In final spt game for mets they are hosting adam eaton and the orioles. Bottom 4th, Orioles lead 8-0. Adam Eaton so far: 3IP, 3H, 0r, 2BB, 0K. But just to tell he has a 5.68era in spt so far. Pelfrey startin for mets in that one. Today everyone is starting a bunch of starters like mets who have delgado, beltran, church, reyes out. phillies are also starting most starters except notable one rollins.

Dunn and Belliard replaced by Nick Johnson and Willie Harris. Through 5 innings for Nats, 9runs on 12hits 1 error commited and 4LOB. Through 5 innings for Phils, 5runs on 8hits 0 errors commited and 5LOB. Pedro Feliz has been awsome today. 3for3, 3RBI(2nd,3rd and 4th of spt), 1RUN, 2doubles(2nd and 3rd of Spt), 1homer(1st of spring). he’s raised his spt avg to .262. Bruntlett hit a deep fly out.

cole hamels is on the sports illustrated for kids cover this time which previews the upcoming mlb season. On the cover it says” world series mvp COLE HAMELS lead or had(small writing on online article) the phillies on target last season. Now they’re the team to beat.

“This start is awful for Moyer’s confidence because his next start counts because it’s on Tuesday at home vs Braves.”
I tend to disagree with that statement. To be sure, Moyer has had an AWFUL spring. But he’s not the type to hang onto these miserable performances for long. He gets knocked around every now and then, but often follows a crappy performance with a line like this: 6ip / 8h / 2 er / 1 bb / 3 k.

Jamie Moyer will finish 1-2 with an 8.27era in Spring Training Games. Also Adam Eaton’s shutout of the mets is over. Balt lead 8-0 now 8-4. For Eaton today against a major chunk of mets startin lineup so far: 4IP, 4R(all earned), 8h, 2BB, 1K, 1 wild pitch and his era is now 7.20. Eaton just to tell will be a starter on the rotation cause orioles don’t got depth. Every starter for phils is out except feliz who has played exceptionally well today. Condrey goes 2IP, 1H, 1BB and 1K and his final SPT era is 1.46. Nice spt for him.

Hey derrick the lone spot that’s going to be available as of now is the one currently occupied by Chan Ho Park, unless they resign him depending on his season. Second if they feel that Moyer can’t pitch as a starter anymore they won’t release him, they’ll move him to the pen because of his ability and durability to pitch in any situation because of how crafty he is. He may be bumped from the rotation at some point if this awful pitching keeps up but i think the phils have eaten enough money this season. Then next spring there could possibly be 2 openings for Happ, Kendrick and Carrasco and maybe even Carpenter if he outpitches Kendrick this season. But waiting in the wings could be Savery/Drabek/Drew Naylor pending their development.

Nats take back the lead 10-9. Phils pitching today:
Moyer today- 9runs in 4IP
Condrey today- 0runs in 2IP
Durbin today- 1run in 1IP so far

…. And this is why Happ MUST be part of the roster. I’m not feeling too great about Moyer… 9 ER (3 HRs) in only 4 innings… damn!

Man what did Pedro Feliz eat today. He came in with 0HR, 1RBI, 0 doubles while battin .205. 4for4 today, 2runs scored, 3rbi’s, 1homerun and 3 doubles. His BA is now .279. Jack Taschner pitches for second straight game. Yesterday went 1IP allowing a single. Durbin goes 1IP, 2H, 1ER, 1K and his final spt era is 4:05 but he’s been better than the era shows.

It’s spring… Moyer’s confidence will be fine. This is a guy that drives home to pick up his kids from school after spring training games. The focus in spring training for Jamie Moyer is getting in shape and throwing pitches not ERA. He’s a guy that lives off of scouting reports and pitch repertoire. I’m sure that he has been working on some of his weaker pitches. He’ll be fine.

Seriously, at this point, we gotta go with our best pitchers… and Majewski > Taschner…. I don’t care if one’s a righty and the other’s a lefty… In any scenario, I wouldn’t want to see either pitching in the 7th, 8th or 9th innings.Guys like Eyre and Madson and, yes, Condrey, will have to cover for JC for these 50 games.

Coste is having a shit*y spring… Will we see Marson sooner than we think?

I think we will see Marson sooner, because they figured out that Paulino isnt really that good (or at least he didnt show anything to indicate that) and if Coste struggles you could see Marson up by midseason.
As for Moyer…boy he sure is givng us all a VERY big scare here. He has been absolutely horrible in ST this year. Just flat out dog dirt terrible. I think hes going to be on a shorter leash than he was last year. They gave him until May last year to turn it around after his bad start and he did turn himself around. This year, I think hes on a short leash. If he has 3,4 starts like this right off the bat hes gotta be replaced.
jA Happ should be hanging around on the MLB roster so it seems so hell be there lingering around waiting for Moyer to tank – and I think he will be the first to go. Guys, this was a bad signing. That doesnt mean Derek Lowe was a good signing though, because in a year or two that will be a bad contract. I just dont see how you can justify giving a 46 year old man not names Nolan Ryan that type of contract….regardless of this performance the season before.

I think the replacement callup order will be as follows:
1: Moyer goes first by Mid-May (disabled list, bullpen, retirement, whatever) and Happ slides into the rotation.
2: Park pitches well to start the season but ends up not being able to give enough innings per start to warrant staying as a starter. By June he is replaced by Carrasco in the starting rotation, but stays on to be a very good reliever for this team.
3: Coste flames out by mid-June early July and is DFA or sent down and replaced by Lou Marson.

Why would they bring Marson up to play twice a week?

Because they traded away Ronny Paulino and they dotn have anyone else…I mean I guess they could pick up a scrap heap guy to do that Coste was supposed to be doing if indeed Coste doesnt produce to the elvel youd expect of a backup.

I DEFINITELY think Moyer will be this years Matt Morris. Just a guy that should have retired but didnt and the only way he realizes it is to get smoked hard every single time out there. Im sorry, he had a wonderful season last year, but I dont see him being an effective or viable option this season. I hope Happ can come in and do a nice job for Moyer once they realize that Moyers done.

Don: Because we want to build a “D”, starting now. The team’s future is now and we gotta go after it. If by mid-June, Marson is better than Coste, then bring him up, even if he’s gonna be back up catcher. You gotta start somewhere… make him learn stuff from Chooch…

If Marson isn’t playing everyday, you hurt his development.. you don’t rush up your top prospects into bench roles because they are better than other backups..
If that was the case, Donald would be riding the pine instead of Bruntlett and Cairo, etc..
Its not a smart move.. if Ruiz is struggling, and Coste is hurt or something than maybe… but Marson needs to be playing AT LEAST half of the time, and as a backup catcher that doesn’t happen

Well then you get a scrap heap guy…I just think that Marson does better by playing in the major leagues 2/5 days than he does in AAA. But I also think you should give him until June or so to show that he can hit AAA pitching.

How will half a season as a backup catcher hurt him, seriously? He could get a call up midseason and some type of platoon with Chooch in June/July games… If anything, he should benefit from being in the big leagues and get to know our pitchers really well for the 2010 season. AND, my main point, he’d bring his bat which will help the team THIS season as we look for another WFC-ship.

Right but if he hits AAA pitching playing everyday.. why stop his progress by decreasing his at-bats, and on the rare times he gets to the plate, the pitchers are that much better and have a distinct advantage against him..
I’m all for bringing guys up when they’re ready.. but Marson’s not ready..
And by the time he is.. it’s got to be a decision between Marson OR Ruiz… not Marson AND Ruiz..

Manny I normally agree with you a lot, but I can’t on this one..
TODAY.. even with his struggles, I’d still rather have Coste at the plate for a key at-bat instead of Marson.. maybe that changes during the season..
But if Ruiz is hitting anywhere near .250.. he’s the starter because his defense is way better than Marson, and I don’t think it serves a prospect well to sit on the bench instead of playing everyday.. which is why Marson and Mayberry and Donald are in the minors
Talent-wise they could probably be on an MLB roster.. but if you aren’t using them regularly you stunt their potential growth (Is it true that if you don’t use it, you lose it? … Is that a serious question?…. – 40 Year-Old-Virgin)

If Marson shows he can hit, by that I mean he has to show you he can come up and play well in MLB when you bring him up – more specifically hit MLB pitching. If hes doing that by the time Coste flames out then its a pretty easy decsion to make…
