Todd Zolecki reports (via Twitter) the Phillies have signed right-handed pitcher Tyler Walker to a minor league contract.

Walker, 32, went 5-8 with a 4.56 ERA in 65 games last season for the Giants. He’s been in the Giants organization for five years; before that, he had a 2002 major league stint with the Mets.

Walker all time record of 20-17 with a 4.52era with 186 strikeouts and 34 saves. Ruben Amaro Jr. signing lots of pitchers to minor league deals. Gary Majewski, Mike Koplove (both pitched well in SPT), Gustavo Chacin, Rodrigo Lopez and now Tyler Walker. Played with mets, then went to san fran then to tampa then back to san fran and now in Philly. Some of these guys could be steals. Either these guys were released by their team or not signed because of number situation or they were coming off injury. Not a bad signing. Hopefully these guys develop in the minors. Also didn’t anyone know Gustavo Chacin can’t grow hair because of a problem he has?

Walker’s big break came in 2005, when Giants’ closer Armando Benítez was out of action for three months. With only one major league save in his career to that point, Walker filled in admirably by converting 23 out of 28 save opportunities. On June 17, in a game against the Detroit Tigers, Walker made history by becoming the first pitcher to record a save (since the save rule became an official stat in 1969) by entering a game with the bases loaded with nobody out and proceeding to strike out all three batters he faced without allowing a run to score.

How bout this-Chris Carpenter making comeback from injury his line today so far: 6IP, 0H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 6K. He’s no hitting the pirates though allowing a run on a error by Albert Pujols.

More pitching depth – it can only help.

    Reds 8, Mets 6 – final.

Really love what Amaro’s doing, whether or not it is getting ahead of the curve he’s stockpiling major league calibre arms well-ahead of the trade deadline when some of these minor league deal come good guys will be moved.

If the pen does get nicked up then it’s not Les Walrond your calling up it’s Majewski, Koplove, Borkowski, Walker before you even considering giving a shot to a guy like Nestor who in previous years would have been the first guy up. Good Planning.

Nestor is going to be the last guy out of the Lehigh bullpen called up from what I’ve heard when he’s in games. He gave up 3 runs to Reading to blow a lead, i doubt he’s anyone’s first choice to go to the Phils pen but i understand what your saying NJ

Yes, Youve done well Lord Vaydah (Amaro)…

I like this because to continue to have a great bullpen, you HAVE to stockpile guys like this with some Major league experience and make them fight for a callup at AAA – get them hungry again. Im all about hoarding pitching (starting and relief) and stashing it in AAA closeby in case they show themsevles worthy of a callup when a roster spot opens up…

apparently amaro also like to hoard pitching with Major League experience too…very smart. there are like 4 or 5 guys hidden down in AAA fighting for a call up who could earn one if any of the phillies major league relievers falter or get injured. and with some of these guys (im thinking of majewski and koplove) you can expect them to actually be serviceable when theyre called up…

Wait a minute… who is ghosting Geoff’s name??? If Geoff starts switching his tune, we’ll have wayyyyyy too much positivism on this site.

Another one of those journeyman pitchers trying to latch on with a MLB club. He had tommy john surgery in 2006 and hasn’t been quite as effective since. He became a free agent during the off season this year. On January 6, 2009, he signed a one-yeal deal with the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners were not impressed and he was released last month (on March 29, 2009), before the start of the regular season. Amaro is trying his hand as GM in rolling the dice on retreads in hopes of having similar success as his predecessor, Pat Gillick.

nope that’s Romero or Eyre, taking a shot with a guy on a minor league is taking a very small chace on a guy to give yourself some depth and options if people go down and at the very least helping the guy out to get back towards a proper roster spot with someone else. The only players it hurts are the career minor leaguers.

Just curious. What does a typical minor league contract like this cost the Phillies?

Meatball- Minor League players make very little there first yr and after that I believe it’s negotiable. Though the higher drafted players have already signed big bonuses and what not, they still negoiate a minimum salary yr to yr. There are minimum amounts for each level but its not like the majors. I believe a level minimum is something like $1000-1200/month for AA ball. So it’s not crazy money. Guys like Walker with major league experience can get more. My guess it’s at the most low 6 figures if not high 5 figures for Walker. And I assume with the economy its the latter. $70k? I mean for 6 months it’s not bad.

If anyone has more info, all the better but this is what I have been told by a few friends who are in the minors or know people in the minors.

ALSO note that we have this guy under control for 2010 I believe too so it was an added bonus signning him. He may have been rough in his previous outings but he won’t be relied upon to come up big in late innings with the major league team so maybe he’ll fit in better. I mean if he’s doing what he did in San Fran here, and seting up, that means we have more things to worry about than Tyler Walker.

I saw this guy pitch on MLB Extra Innings last year in SF. He was fine, except when in SF’s AT&T Park – then he SUCKED.

  • He is a key now! Maybe replace Lidge?
