The New Voice Of The Phillies? It Could Take Time

Opinion, Posts

Before tonight’s game and all, I wanted to pass along Frank Fitzpatrick’s Morning Bytes about what happens after Harry, as in, who could take the reins as lead play-by-play TV man.

It’s a touchy subject to tackle so quickly after Kalas’ death, but as we live in a world of expanding space and constant news angles, it’s a subject that becomes topical in a flash. Fitzpatrick breaks down the current Phillies broadcasting team and decides Tom McCarthy is the logical choice. He is. In fact, when the Phillies brought McCarthy back to the team, I figured he was pre-decided as Kalas’ logical replacement. McCarthy is likable, and though he may be chatty on air, that’s mainly because of his recent baseball roles (studio guy, third man, field reporter). He would be a fine choice, but getting used to him would take time.

I would immediately rule out Chris Wheeler, Larry Andersen and Gary Matthews. Wheels, for better or worse, is too divisive among the fanbase to be No. 1. Andersen is universally loved, but he doesn’t cater to play-by-play whatsoever. Sarge the same, and as a former ballplayer turned easygoing fan, there’s much more Whitey in him than Harry.

That brings me to Scott Franzke, a fan of our site and an all-around good guy. He’s a class play-by-play man and knows how to pull back (just listen to his emotionally charged call of Monday’s game), but he’s hardly heard as the radio broadcaster. Still, he’s young (37) and could be just the person to lead the broadcasts into the next decade.

Fitzpatrick then mentions Harry’s son, Todd Kalas, as a possible replacement. To which I disagree. Let Todd cull his own legacy on his own terms, and don’t let him come to Philadelphia. The Phillies need to either mold their own voice or work with what they have; to bring in an existing voice that is already on a forward path would be wrong. Plus, on an odd level, I’d rather see the memory of Harry remain the memory of Harry, and not be lived on through his kin in Philadelphia. If that makes sense.

It is always possible the Phils open the gates and allow for a new voice to enter the race. If that’s the case, sign me up – because of Harry, the one job I’ve always wanted most in my life? Calling play-by-play for the Phillies.

I’d like to see Franzke man the play by play. He does it well on the radio and is much better than T-Mac. I find myself muting the TV when it’s him and Wheels. They never shut up! Franzke and LA are much more fun to listen to!

Count me as a Franzke person too. I like the Franzke/LA combo and will likely be listening to WPHT with the TV muted for the remainder of the season (although, unlike many, I don’t have a problem with the TV crew. I just prefer LA and Franzke).

    How do you pronounce Franzke?

After Franzke’s Tuesday broadcast I have new found appreciation for him (always thought he was pretty good). You could feel his emotion running through the booth, and it was very touching on such a sad day.

does anyone have audio of monday’s broadcast for us out of staters?

I honestly wish that the Phils would just get rid of Wheeler. I seriously cannot stand him and don’t know how others do.

On the other hand, I am in full support of Franzke. He has the combination of passion + play-by-play skills. Larry is a good supplement to him, and those two should be the immediate choice.

With all that being said, I sure as hell still miss Harry. It’s going to take a while to get over that. I think the thing I miss most is him signing off and saying goodnight to everyone. It just won’t be the same without that friendly goodbye.

I can not stand either McCarthy or Wheeler. I have never met a person that like Wheeler. McCarthy is like Don Pollack on 6 ABC news, he does stupid and pointless interviews and is very tacky. I would be very pleased to listen to Franzke and Larry Anderson the rest of the year. They could be the next Kalas and Ashburn (They will never replace them, but would be a great substiute). I used to love Larry Anderson’s “Deep Thoughts”, they were great!

Scott Graham (and I have no sources, just intuition) may be Steve Sabol’s pick as Harry’s successor in his other realm…

…and w/ so many friends and family that live in other parts of the world, I believe we in Philly lose sight of how much others appreciated his work/voice for NFL Films. I’ve been fielding calls from friends/family from all over the US that say football now won’t be the same….

    Franzke & L.A. no question.

I can’t stand T-Mac, especially (although this may not be his fault) when the tv broadcasts cut away to his in-game interviews. This sometimes caused crucial plays to be missed. I like Larry Anderson and Gary Matthews but they aren’t play by play guys. I like Franzke and even though he is now gone I did like Scott Graham. I don’t really like Wheels…

Either lets Franzke do it or bring back Scott Graham.

They aren’t going to boot Wheels from the TV booth just because Harry died.

It’s either T-Mac or Franzke.. Tmac was brought-in as the replacement for Harry, and Franzke-with-L.A. are settled into their Radio gig..

I like the knock on Tmac doing stupid interviews… as though he wanted to them…

Scott Graham was good in that role, but I’ve heard from lots of sources that he is an absolute D!CK ..

I know it will be tough to fill in such a great voice but I don’t know so much about our current broadcasting team. I wish all the best to harry’s family.it’s really sad. You almost feel like you know him. But as a fill in right now.. Who’s in favor of bringing back Scott Grahm.

t-mac irritates me because he doesn’t have the… baseball chutzbah if you will. i can’t put my finger on it, but i’ve never seen an interview or a piece that he did where it felt natural. he feels like a reporter, not a baseball guy talking about the game. harry, as tim has said, felt like an elder family member calling the game. t-mac just doesn’t have that appeal to me.

i’m not saying they need an ex athlete, but there are guys that come off as sports guys and guys that don’t, and t-mac never has for me.

Scott Graham… anybody like this guy? I love him, he did TU basketball and a lot of A10 games and he was also play-by-play for the Phils one year.

I think Scott Graham would be great.

wow, surprised at the tmac hate, personally I love him and have since day one. ironically if he takes over he’ll be in the same spot as harry was when he started, trying to replace a long time and loved local legend.

tmac has a good on-air personality, he comes across as genuine, and I think with time could could be “our guy”. despite wheels knowledge, he rubs a lot of people the wrong way and could never be number one, plain and simple. franzke would be fine as a lead guy as well, but my guess him they like him and LA as the radio team and will leave it as such.

I like Franske… I like T-mac, but as a commentator, or doing mid game reports, not so much play by play.

Scott Grahm was good to, but I don’t know what happend to him after he left.

I would love for Harry’s son Todd to replace him. I don’t think it detracts from either Harry or Todd’s unique accomplishments. Remember, Todd grew up in Philly and grew up keeping score for the Phillies. He would bring depth on so many levels to the broadcast, and would be able to develop his own renditions of “Outta here”.

I vote for Todd Kalas. And you can’t get him here too fast in my opinion.

I kind of hope the Phils go in a different direction and hire Jim Jackson full time once the Flyers season is done. He has done baseball before, albeit minor leagues. He already does radio pre and post game for the team so he is familiar with them. However if he doesn’t get it then it should be Franzke. He is very good and I’d also like to see LA back on TV with him.

I think it’s going to be McCarthy for better or worse. He left the Mets to come back to Philly, I believe, because he was offered TV instead of radio, which is what he was doing in NY. My guess is he already knew what his roles was going to be post-Harry. Plus, didn’t Franzke say during Tim’s interview that he prefers radio?

All that said, McCarthy needs to shut up once in a while. Good Lord.

love listening to fanzke on the radio (or the mlb gameday audio, as i’m in NY). i too think it would be cool if they could bring back scott graham. those ads for graham slam ice cream got me every time.

Personally, I’ve always liked McCarthy. He was great on the radio during his first Phillies stint. His voice is very authoritative and he has the skills to replace Harry. I was excited when he came back.

I also like Franzke. Both men have the same level of talent.

Ironically, I never liked Scott Graham, simply because he and LA goofed off too much on radio and rarely called the game– which is a must for that medium.

TV and radio are not the same beasts. Radio requires play-by-play delivery. In TV it’s optional. McCarthy is chatty precisely because he’s only on TV and TV doesn’t demand his play-by-play skills. At least not like radio, anyway. McCarthy knows the medium he’s working with and responds accordingly. So does Franzke. Heck, even Harry approached TV and radio differently.

Therefore, we shouldn’t penalize McCarthy. Great broadcasters are cut in the radio booth, not the TV booth. Harry himself gained his fame on the radio– and our next great Phillies broadcaster will come from the same place.

Bottom line: Dave Montgomery should stick his best talent, whether it’s McCarthy or Franzke, in the radio booth.

Franzke really got my attention when I heard his call of Jimmy Rollin’s triple during the last game (the NL East clincher) of the 2007 season. I was at that game and his call (heard on mlb.com later) really captured the moment and is one of my all-time favorites. If you can find it, it is worth the listen. I think he has that quality Harry had…..to keep it smooth during the game, just the right pace, pure-pro, and then cut loose with a pure emotion call when the moment calls for it.

FrankW, that Franzke call was awesome!

Either T-Mac or Franzke I would be cool with. They both have great skills. I don’t think McCarthy has gotten a fair shot…all those weird in-game interviews where he’s sitting in a random seat in the stands. They crack me up. Why does he have to sit in the stands? haha…

I loved Scott Graham’s radio calls though, and ate some of the ice cream today. I feel like every time I turned on weekend local sports, he was announcing. He does basketball AND football I think.

I don’t know if I’m alone on this one, but I love Larry Anderson. His voice is great, and I wish I could hear him on TV. I haven’t listened to many games on the radio yet this season, so I can’t comment on Franzke just yet.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anybody has Harry calling anything during the 1993 playoffs and World Series? I cant find it anywhere- thanks for the help.

Harry- R.I.P. I’ll be at the game tonight and when they sing High Hopes in the 7th, I may shed a few tears. It definitely wont be the same without him.

I guess I just don’t see it the way many of you do. I don’t see any problem with TMac though him and Sarge AND Wheeler is going to be ….well it’s going to be something alright. I actually don’t think TMac is the problem I think it’s that combo. Franzke is really good but him and LA just seem better suited for a radio stinit.

I like T-Mac. I agree Franzke and LA should be on TV. Sarge needs to get better and he will, I like the fact that he actually played the game. Thats why I liked when Schmitty and Maddox were on. Kruk too. No one was better than Whitey.

I remember Todd Kalas on PRISM for a couple seasons, he was young and quite raw. He also had a very nasal sound, I didnt care for him. Let him stay in Tampa.

And honestly Wheeler is not that bad compared to some of the other teams announcers. I had the baseball package on cable for a season. Some of the announcers for other teams make Wheeler look like Red Barber and Mel Allens love child.

I always liked Scott Graham. It was a mistake to let him go. He is great on NFL films as well.

A note on Wheeler, he got much better once Andy Musser retired. Talk about terrible. Musser didnt have a clue.

Thanks, my first post. I just found this site and registered.

CharlieD-Andy Musser wasn’t just bad, he was also a jinx. He would always say stuff like “oh, this guy hasn’t hit a homerun in ages (opposing team), then Bam, there it goes! I literally could not listen to him, and my dad called him every name in the book, and some he made up, quite colorful.

And, I agree about Wheels. When he first started I didn’t like him at all, but now he has grown on me, and I actually enjoy listening to him. when you listen to other teams’ announcers, you really do appreciate the guys we have, and we were very fortunate to have been blessed with Whitey and Harry.

If that is the case Tim, and you get your shot, DO NOT STOP WRITING FOR THIS SITE!!!. Or if you would, you had better mention the gameday beer at the beginning of the game.

I agree with Georgie…Have you ever listened to Atlanta or Pittsburgh games?Compared to those announcers our remaining guys are hall of famers.
I dont mind Wheels,But I would rather have Franzke & LA on TV.
T-Mac will have a hard time because of the Harry comparison, but he’ll get better with time .

Tom McCarthy ya wanna guess why he’s not in New York anymore, he says on the broadcast last night CC of the Yanks got BATTERED….not old Dumb One …1 er 4 so 5 bb the bullpen gave up the other 9runs CC was there but no support either the bullpen or batting while he was in so my advise to T MAC is mind our business lets not keep doing the “look at the accident on the other side of the street” get your facts right Old Dumb one your not the Big Apple anymore…funny when Blanton was taken out Old Dumb says Blanton did a good job hmm think he got tagged for atleast 3 runs and some 8 hits….oh and the lose….which is better..hmmm its better to get your fact straight before you open your PIE HOLE..T MAC,my thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Kalas and his family there will never be another.

Scott Franzke, over T-mac and tell Wheeler that he is “outta here” Harry the K hated Wheels,Wheeler cheated on his wife, he is scum and he should be let go they should have gotten rid of him after Whitey past, cause Whitey said he couldn’t trust Wheels anymore, and all of this can be found on the internet just Google Harry Kalas and you can see the old Philadelphia Maganize article, so let’s go with Franzke, LA and Sarge get rid of T-Mac and Wheels.

PS and add Kane Kalas after he graduates college, if that’s the path he so chooses.

I loved Scott Graham’s home run calls…of course, not even close to Harry’s calls. I thought he would be a great replacement when he was here: Deep resonant voice, great home run calls, excitement in the voice when appropriate, and signature phrases to hang on to such as “put this one in the win column for the fightin’ Phils”

I hope they bring him back!

    Franzke is fine too, though.

    I don’t care for TMAC.

Now that Harry’s gone, it’ll be a muted tv for me for the rest of the season.

I always TRY to listen to Wheeler, but after about an inning, maybe 2, I grab the remote and hit the red mute button. I never heard a person who likes to talk the way Wheeler does. He talks…and talks….and scrapes up ANYthing to throw into the mix.

And McCarthy is much more likable, but…dang….he is too talkative. Both he and Wheeler do not seem to grasp that they are doing tv – and that we can see the game. If only they could just be quiet sometimes…..I love the sound of the game, and I can SEE what is happening. Just tell me what you think I need to know.

    Wheeler….drives me crazy.

I like Franzke alot! He is a very good play by play guy. McCarthy talks way to much. I like a little bit a silence between pitches and this guy just keeps talking. Between him and Wheels it is almost unlistenable. Franzke should be the head PXP. I wouldn’t mind bringing Scott Graham back either. Always liked him!

McCarthy is indeed likeable … but too, um, “chipper” for my liking … I prefer solid, slightly sarcastic, passionate calling. I really am a Franske fan too … and I liked Scott Graham.

Tom McCarthy. I want to like him, but as everyone’s been saying, he just keeps talking about everything under the sun, constantly. We just want to watch the game,& hear play-by-play. Why does management let this go on? It is excruciating. & is it just my ears or does he have a nasal blockage of some sort? Half the time I hear him say, “iddings” for innings or Phillies.cob, or Jibbie Rollins! It’s like half the time his “n’s” come out sounding like “b”.
I sure hope Frantzke and Anderson are soon on tv..
p.s. Can someone direct Leslie to use a softer voice??

I shut the tv off when Chris is on. I wish it were different but its not. I can’t like Chris ever. He just does not seem to be a nice person and he talks too much. What do the Phillies see in him? Please tell me. Did they use any type of fued to fuel ratings?

The banter between Franzke and LA is second to none. They complement eachother very well. I don’t care for Sarge that much and i think T-mac approaches the game from too much of a “broadcasting” point of view rather than as a fan as Harry and Franzke do. I also mute the TV and listen to the radio when Franzke and LA are calling the game
