They aren’t going to just release him.. and your long reliever only comes into games that you’re usually already losing.. and you pull your starter out early.. someone who can give you 3-4 innings (which Moyer can do effectively).. its usually the 2nd or 3rd time around a lineup that they start to mash him

We know from how the Phillies do things, that they clearly aren’t going to get in a bidding war with the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, etc. .. to get the best available pitcher..

They WILL however look to improve their rotation if that is what they feel they need to do… There is a chance that calling up Carrasco and keeping all the prospects is their best move. Instead of adding an OK pitcher in Aaron Cook, but having to give up some prospects to get him..

You will only see them make that type of move is Carrasco struggles, and Moyer never finds his groove.. I think that the team we go to postseason War with has a starting rotation of: Hamels, Myers, Happ, Blanton, Carrasco.. Moyer in the pen as a long reliever

1- Cardenas “hits” left handed. Maybe he throws right handed but he bats lefty.
2- Blanton was clutch for us last yr, you have to give up something to get something
3- Is Spencer better than Ibanez/Vic/Werth? Would you rather have traded Brown/Collier/Gose/Taylor? He was expendable
4- I always thought outman would be a middle of the road starter. I am really pulling for him to do well.
5- I don’t want Lee, I said he was better than the other 2 but as Dom pointed out, it is quite close. I said I Cook would be a great pick up. Lots of ground balls.

This sets forth the available pitchers for the Phils to acquire near the trade deadline add the odds of the Phils getting each one. The Dipsy addressed Gil Meche, Erid Bedard, Dan Haren, Mark Beuhrle, Jon Garland, Roy Oswalt, and Aaron Cook. Cook is the Dipsy’s morning line favorite at 5-1, with Oswalt coming in a 7-1. Maybe only 2 iffy pitchers, depending on how Happ and Myers can perform from now on. Possibly they can perform quite well, which would mean 2 “ifs”.

Why would you want lee. I can’t understand that one at all. And cardenas isn’t lefthanded. He is right handed. Spencer I don’t like but he is showing power and is at double a and never said outman was ready last year. Point is we gave up a sure pitcher who is in the major and the top 2nd basemen prospect according to ba for blanton. overpaid. will they over paid for medioce talent again. Why not if possible get a top starter, not a rental, or if he is in his final year before finalizing deal. get a contract done. or no deal. Why get another iffy pitcher, instead of a stud. We have 4 iffy pitcher right now.

Buehrle has a better career ERA (3.78 vs. 4.09) and WHIP (1.27 vs. 1.32) than Cliff Lee… those numbers are pretty damn close though..

Throw Bedard into the mix and its even closer

ERA ranks:
Bedard = 3.74
Buehrle = 3.78
Lee = 4.09

WHIP ranks:
Buehrle = 1.27
Lee = 1.32
Bedard = 1.33

Batting Average Against:
Bedard = .247
Lee = .263
Buehrle = .269

Lee has the best K/BB ratio… Buehrle gives up the most Hits-per 9 Innings, but walks the least per 9 Innings… Bedard strikes out the most per 9, gives up the least hits per 9, but walks the most per 9…

you couldn’t go wrong with any of these guys, but I don’t think any of them will happen, because the Phillies (coming off a mostly Home-Grown World Series) know how valuable prospects can be.. and they have to believe that they are good evaluaters of talent at this point.. so we’ll see

A couple of things, first off, unless you do believe stats, and Geoff you seem to love them especially quality starts (which by the way is a joke, made up so pitchers can get more money.) Than you can turn around and say Coste sucks, Tim put the numbers up there for you and they are not at all bad. Especially against lefties. So he gives you a rh bat of the bench, if they go with 3 catchers, because you don’t want to use him as just a bat, cause he is your only back up catcher. Second Way to soon before dead line to talk about trades, I agree if you are trading away prospects, the guy you get has to be here at least next year if not two more years, and certain prospects even though they may eventually turn in to serviceable pros or better, are just simply block in some organizations, like Donald (unless he can play third which is doubtful as of now) and I think Marson, because I like Chooch behind the plate for at least 2010 or 11, and we have another kid behind Marson that should be ready by then. Even if Mason becomes the next Johnny Bench, if we get a quality 2/3 pitcher for him that hangs out for two or three years, and wins another wfs, then it was worth it cause he was not going to play here anyway.
And IMO JRoll will retire a Phillie, as with Uttley. And I would not be surprised especially if they can win another WS or two in the next 4 years that they will re sign Hammels and Howard. Winning does wonders for these guys egos, and if they can win here some will stay here.
And lastly to Georgie, I 100% agree with you I love Chooch, and think his game calling and handling pitchers is why under rated by many on here and in Philadelphia

Signing Bako pretty much says to me that Charlie, for some reason, doesn’t think Marson is ready, or maybe they want to use him in a trade. Personally, I don’t think the pitchers like the way Marson calls the game, you’ve got to think the managers have consulted with the pitchers regarding this, and have gotten negative feedback. If you watch Ruiz, he is extremely confident in his interaction with the pitcher, not afraid to go out to the mound, seems to reassure them.

Offense is not/should not be a concern with this team, so they need to make sure they have the best defense possible, and although many here disagree, that is Ruiz behind the plate. He is probably the guy I defend most, because I think he’s undervalued and doesn’t get the love from the fans as much as the rest of the team.

I’m ranting a bit, but you gotta feel the love for Chooch!!!!!
