Duh. Obvious Problems Hurt Phils Again

2009 Recaps, Posts
The reasons why the Phillies lost to the Braves, 4-2, were glaringly obvious:
- Jack Taschner was brought into a high-leverage situation, up one, in the seventh inning. Taschner is not a setup man. Scott Eyre, Ryan Madson, Chad Durbin and Clay Condrey were all rested.
- Jimmy Rollins went 0-for-5, lowering his average to .195. At no time did he look like a threat to even get on base.
- To accompany that, Shane Victorino went 0-for-4.
- Brad Lidge was brought in while down a run. Again, poor, poor bullpen management.
It’s no secret these were the problems. Despite a solid (if battling) start by Brett Myers (6 IP, 1 ER), a great offensive and defensive showing by Ryan Howard (2-for-4, 2 2B) and inspired play by Matt Stairs (2-for-2, RBI), the Phillies didn’t look like winners. After dropping two of three against the Braves, the Phils are now 15-14.
Here’s the really sad thing about this recap: I wrote it after the bottom of the eighth.

lol..wow nyhater…are you sure you arent a bandwagon fan?…you sound just like yankee fans when they were winning..we make better arguments than yours and immediately you pull out the WELL…WE WON A CHAMPIONSHIP…conratulations we all know you guys did…and i gave the props to them last year..lidge was outstanding…everyone hit at the right time…well its a new year…we have a new bullpen…we are going to hit we are going to run we are going to pitch and we are going to win…again any smart TRUE philly fan would realize that the mets are going to be good this year…and the phillies are back down to earth

Phillyhater,
If you gave props to the phillies last year when we won, then kudos to you.
My point is that just because in the first 30 games of this season the phillies rotaton has been awful, and yes, rollins has been putrid, along with numerous other aspects of the phillies game, doesn’t mean that one should lose faith in them. You are right; many fans above have called for rollins’ and the starters’ heads. Those fans are absolutely wrong. You stick with what got you here in the first place. You stick with what has proven can win a championship.
Conversely, while I understand your excitement with the mets, how “this is gonna be the year”, and “this year’s gonna be different” much like any other fan says, you have to be realistic and judge your starters based on a larger sample size of work – not one major league start or six ok starts. And, and this is a big and, you haven’t added that vocal and emotional leader who will do ANYTHING to get a win.

YAWN, just another day at Phillies Nation:
Mets fans: We are the best we cant be beat, look at our rotation look at our new shiny bullpen. Look at me show up and talk smack when the Phillies lose and disappear when they win.
Phils Fans: We are the WFC(which by the way we have the right to claim until this season comes to an end), Rollins, Moyer, insert player of the week need to be cut etc.
Like a broken record

Brian of CO: Yeah… my name is classless… but when I go to a black tie affair, I’ll wear a tuxedo. If I go to the pool, I’ll wear a swimsuit. And when I come here… :P
I’ll give you last year. And the year before. You earned them (and I came here to congratulate y’all so stop yapping at me about disappearing if the Mets lose.
BUT… as far as THIS season goes, that World Series ring is just a pretty piece of jewelry. All the talking in May about how the Mets will collapse in September… you guys are making it sound like that’s what you have to bank on… that, without the Mets collapsing, you can’t win on your own. That’s kinda sad. I’m a Mets fan and I think the Phillies deserve more respect than that.
If I realized that my faith in my team was based on another team’s failure and not my own team’s success, I’d start to wonder if my team deserved anything they allegedly achieved… including my fandom.

I am getting so tired of this phillies team. Something has to be done. Get taschner, cairo, coste and moyer off the team. They are worthless. Moyer was the biggest waste of money. We all knew last year was his last hurrah. I don’t think Blanton shuld be far behind them either. This is getting really embarassing. How can amaro sit here in may after 30 games with this era and not do something?

Something I ask myself often: Do we expect too much from Jimmy Rollins? We usually mention him in the same breath as Howard and Utley. But these last two, in my opinion, are wayyyyyy superior in offensive talent… When you look at Jimmy’s career numbers they are very similar to other very good shortstops, but who are actually considerably older than him. Did we see his peak already (he’s 30 now)? Is he in his post-prime all of a sudden? This scares the sh*t out of me, cause we all know that when Jimmy doesn’t get on base, we don’t win.

Phillies are 0-10 when they score 3 runs or less..
For YEARS we’ve been saying that Rollins isn’t a leadoff hitter.. we all know that, It’s just that until yesterday, we didn’t have a better option.. Now Victorino has become that option.
Rollins needs to be hitting #5 or #6..
And while people are too quick to discount his overall game, because of his lack of hitting.. we still need to realize that he is one of, if not THE best defensive SS in baseball.. so while it’s clear that he’s not winning the batting crown this year.. there is much more to baseball than hitting..
A little while spent in the #5 or #6 spot will take some pressure off.. give him a chance to hit with some runners on base, where those fly outs, still get in a run.. or the ground ball to 1st base might move a runner over.. and your at-bats aren’t as magnified..
Time to make a change for the good of the team.. but people ready to burn him alive at the stake need to relax a lotta bit

_The only thing they should have done was pull Taschner out early in the game. Leave Jamie Moyer alone! It is early in the season and we will get through this slump!

NYHATER,
i have no idea what your comment meant. it doesnt make any sense. livan hernandez is getting the job done and thats the bottom line. our starters DO NOT have to be as good as yours or any other team in the league, even though their better than yours by far because our bullpen is the BEST in baseball. as long as our starters keep us in the game we can easily win because our bullpen with bobby parnell, puts, and krod is the best 7,8,9 combo there is in all of baseball. and you really are dumb. you realize pelfreys era is higher than what ti wil be because he had TENDINITIS and pitched through the pain for a couple of starts. Johnny Maine is a stud with one of the best fastaballs in baseball… and i dont know what you can sad bad about him the guy flat out is a tough competeitor. Johnathon my man Niese is a young Barry Zito. And once again our bullpen is just so dominate… we have the games best loser in K-ROD hands down. the Metsies are good… real good…. not to mention he game’s best pitcher, aka Johan Santana ia going tonight. Let’s Go Mets!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taschner let himself off easy yesterday. He explained that sometimes you make bad pitches and the batter gets out on them and sometimes you make good pitches and the batter is able to do damage with them. He is correct that Kotchman turned a decent pitch into a squeaker that made it through the infield BUT…
This doesn’t account for the real problem that led to the Kotchman hit. With 2 outs and runners on the corners, Taschner faced the lefthand hitter McCann. McCann entered the game batting .130 off lefties. Taschner walked him on 4 pitches to get to Kotchman, hitting .265 off lefties. I hope Dubee and Manuel point that out to him since he seems oblivious.

Murph, what can I say besides that i hope other mets fans are more relistic than you. Jonathan Niese is a young Barry Zito? You must mean the current zito, because there is no basis for what you are saying. John Maine is a “stud”? He’s good, but far from a stud. Talk with intelligence, not with your heart.

On a lighter note, murph, are you permanently out of the two hole in the lineup?

guten tag,
