Error Hands Mets A 1-0 Win

PhilsMetsOne bad throw.

That’s why the Mets defeated the Phillies, 1-0, at Citi Field. It was a pitchers’ duel, and it turned on a completely unnecessary throw by Pedro Feliz, which sailed past first base and allowed Carlos Delgado to score from first on a squib Fernando Tatis grounder.

But there was more than a throw that cost the Phils the game — they left 13 men on base. The biggest culprits were Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth, who each struck out three times and looked baffled at times. Credit Johan Santana, who was dominant during his seven-inning start; still, the Phils should’ve been able to claw out one run.

The Mets couldn’t score off Chan Ho Park, who turned in a sparkling six-inning, one-hit outing. The only blemish was a just-enough double by Daniel Murphy. Otherwise, Park was hitting his spots, attacking the zone and holding a wealth of confidence despite pitching in enemy territory. Scott Eyre surrendered the run, but it was unearned considering the circumstance. Chad Durbin pitched a strong 1.1 innings of relief.

Shane Victorino continued his hitting streak with an eighth-inning double. But he couldn’t score — probably should’ve. And the Phils? They probably should’ve won.

Dem Mets won da game huh Greg. Grammar owns you. Anyways we gave that game away. Bad throw from Feliz and not sure what Werth was thinking holding onto that ball for so long. At least Park looked good, hopefully this is a sign of things to come and not a fluke.

Mr. Malcolm, by far my favorite blogger on Philliesnation.com, surprised me with his last statement: “[the Phillies] should have won.”

I could make an analogous argument about the Mets. There were a few pitches, which unfortunately I cannot recall at the moment, that the Mets should have (and could have) crushed off Mr. Park. Given Mr. Santana’s gem, the Mets should have capitalized on Park’s few, but nonetheless conspicuous errors to lessen the superfluous stress levels and, perhaps, allow him to further develop confidence in his team. Although gratuitously, the Mets won the game.

    David

P.S. Your bullpen is very solid.

Johan was great, but the Phillies left 13 men on base. Pedro Feliz single handedly lost the game. Terrible performance tonight by Feliz. He had the error – which was inexcuseable for even a minor league player. Then, Raul leads off with a double and Feliz swings at the second pitch in the dirt and pops it up. He should sit tomorrow. Start prepping Donald at 3rd in AAA.

Park was amazing but they got him out at the right time. He stopped throwing strikes in the 6th and Charlie pulled him at the right spot.

Thanks David and thanks for the somewhat rational post. Johan pitched very well and I wont say that we should have won that game but I will say that we shouldnt have lost that game, meaning that we killed ourselves and we should have at least been heading to the bottom of the 9th 0-0. Thats the way the ball rolls, back at it tomorrow we are! Go Phils

I think you should all post here every day.

I take from this Park’s performance.

Mets fans, congratulations. You are at .500. And still not in first place. And won on an unearned run. In a pitchers park. You are the second coming of the ’27 Yankees.

first I think most of you missed the tongue in check should have won in the post. Santana did pitch well, great really, and needed to give the guy credit he is really good. Now I am sorry but I can’t not trash Geoff, every time you actually make less sense in your post, I thought you could not get any stupider, with your Moyer post earlier today. But one bad play, one error and Pete Happy should sit tomorrow. Come on even that is over the top for you. Schmidt never made and error, Brooks Robinson never made and error, YOur buddy Scot Rolan never made and error that cost their team’s a run. Give me a break, Man you are and Idiot,
And I have to confess i trashed Park and said he did not belong in the rotation, but if he can build of tonight and pitch like this for a few more starts, he deserves his place in the rotation, Does anyone know how many games Ruiz has caught Park this year is it just one other one?

Rollins and victorino are the two most overrated players in all of baseball, without those big bats around them, they get less pitches to hit, so on a team like the braves they are mediocre at best …and btw reyes is arguably the best all around player in baseball. Before you make assanine statements check your facts.

Really it would be better just to ignore Geoff than respond to him, becuase if he knows people are paying attention to the trash that he spews everyday he’s just going to keep doing it.

Mets troll fans aside, I gotta say I was impressed by the Chan Ho and the bullpen tonight. I mean this was a home game for them in which their best pitcher was on the mound and he hung with them throughout the game. Yes, the Phillies could’ve won this game and had a horrendous outing the field, but the fact that they barely lost shows how good this team can be. Make no mistake about it, this game was way more important for the Mets than Phillies. On to the next one…

Your a idiot!! Reyes will never win an MVP. So by saying he is better then Rollins is just plain dumb. I think you need to get your facts straight.

I dont know about “shouldve won.” More like, shouldve gone extra innings, then, who know what would happen. Mr. Mutley, you’re starting to sound like a yankee fan with your defensiveness. Every time a yankee fan gets confronted with a loss or anything negative about their team, all they do is shout “26 world championships” or something equally irrelevant and lame. So, calm down, take a loss like a man, and quit acting like the phillies are a dynasty or something. Last year is gone. No one said the Mets were better than the Phils last year, or this decade or anything other than tonight. Try a little objectivity. It gives you credibility. Back to the game, where did Park come from tonight? He looked real good, as did the Phillies bullpen. Cant believe they committed three errors though. Very unlike them.

All this ugliness is overshadowing the great performance by Chan Ho tonight. Props to him, he was under the gun, facing Johan and the Mets, his last chance maybe, and he sucked it up like a man and pitched a good game, my hat’s off to Park tonight, and I’m off to bed.

It was tough to watch knowing that we gave them everything and they earned nothing. What was Werth doing quadruple clutching that ball? I still dont understand that, he would have been out by a mile, instead we give up the run and lose the game.

Sometimes it seems like Werth’s head is not entirely in the game, like he has lapses in his decision-making.

Charlie Manuel gets the loss in this one.
I’m so tired of the righty vs. lefty and vice versa stat, it is so overrated.
Is this little league…is that all it takes to manage in the bigs?
Park and Bruntlett ended with the same Avg. and Park has a home run to his name this season, forget the fact that he had walked twice in the game and had less pitches than Santana.
Sorry for sounding bitter but I just got home from the game and I remeber saying if Bruntlett gets out that PH could cost the Phils the game and that would go on Manuel.

    “They probably should’ve won.”

I have to agree with David, the Mets fan. Park pitched well above his head tonight and hung with the best pitcher the past 4 years. Santana is just a beast. I expect nothing less from him, especially when they play the Phillies. But to say the Phils should have won, that takes away a stellar performance from Johan. Yes the Phillies were sloppy, but you cannot say the would have gone on to win if they hold Delgado. As far as Park is concerned, he saved his job tonight obviously. Mets announcers said it best tonight and that is this game should be the blueprint for Park the rest of the season.

Wow. There are certainly some jerk Met fans crashing the nation tonight. My thoughts: Feliz lost the ballgame for the Phils. That throw was horrible and should not have been made in the first place. Just a mental error. Also, I think this game would have gone to extras if Durbin got out out of the eighth unscathed (if not for the Feliz throw). Not sure the Phils would have won, but we can’t know now. Finally, the Phils should take this loss with a grain of salt. They are still first in the division and Johan was on the hill and he owns Philly. The Phils should regroup tomorrow now that Johan is out of the way. Final thought: Reyes best all around player in baseball? You’ve gotta be kidding. I’d probably give that to Matt Kemp of the Dodgers. Vic and JRoll overrated? utter nonsense. JRoll is a slow starter and Vic just hits .290, hits about 13 HRs, and swipes about 35 bags. That is NOT overrated. My, some Mets fans are ignorant. GO PHILLIES!

you guys are harsh on feliz. i mean dont get me wrong, it was a horrible error to have, but he is usually pretty good down there and third and always seems to find himself getting hits in clutch situations. dont be so hard on him

Bottom line, the Amazins haven’t won anything yet.Just as everyone knows you don’t mess with Johan, but Chan Ho Park (I still think thats a stadium in South Korea) went out there and basically redeemed himself from last Fridays Ollie Perez type game.Todays game was decided on an error, big deal everyone in PN can bitch moan groan and wheeze but bottom line the box score reads Mets-1/Phillies-0.Fellow Mets fans, you should look back at the last 3 Years and look how our Amazins have done.2006,BIG DEAL we should have won but bottom line the Cards won in 7 and deserved to be the World Champs, and 2007 and 2008 we spit the bit and in 2008 the Phils deserved to be the world champs.I don’t know about you but as for our Amazins…every time they hear the bell ring, they hit the snooze bar.Now I do hate the Phillies, but I do have respect for the Champs, and they are the Champs until SOMEBODY knocks them off,Re the Snooze Bar.

I was at the game last night in right field when Werth made that triple clutch throw. Now I pretty much had the same angle as he did looking at the plate and I saw Razor Shines about 15 feet down the line from the catcher putting his hands up trying to stop Delgado. My guess on the reasoning for the triple clutch is because Werth saw that and not Delgado running right through stop sign. Nice job Razor!!

Also, Santana was in trouble once during this game, when Ibanez led off the 7th with a double. You guys left 13 on base and I didn’t even realize. “The Phillies should’ve won.” Come on, seriously, both teams were crap offensively. Some games are going to come down to who makes the first mistake. The Phillies cracked first and thats all the Mets needed. You guys had 2 innings to crack our bullpen, but you couldn’t do it. Feliciano dominated you guys as well as F-Rod. Sit down, shut up, and lets do it again tonight.

And you guys are only 3 games over .500, you need to chill out on the whose better than who crap. Its a long season fellas, but this stuff is fun, huh!?

Jason, Grrrumpy Miner just sh*t on his fellow idiotic mets fans and said that we deserve respect and are the WFC. What are you attacking him for? He is the only met fan whose opinion I respect and am willing to listen to. All others I try to ignore.

So on that note, Jason you are a dumba$$ trying to start a fight with a met fan, and Grrrumpy Miner, I respect your opinion completely and thank you for being a fan of BASEBALL, not just a phillies hater.

If I would have told you that Park was going to come out and pitch 6 scoreless and the Mets would muster just 2 hits, you would have to like our chances. We all thought that there was NO WAY IN HELL that Park was going to toe the rubber and outduel Santana and he almost did. He also worked two walks. Hats off… in the end, we’re not going to beat them every time. That was a good outing for us… against a guy like Johan, you’re either going to man up and battle or you’re going to lie down. We definitely did what we could.

Charlie should shoulder a lot of blame… you get two leadoff doubles and never think to bunt… really? I mean, with Santana throwing filth and the Mets doing what they do best, which is choking and giving Santana no run support, you have to think that one run is going to be the difference in that game. We left 13 runners on base… it’s not like there weren’t opportunities.

I wonder if these mets fans are normal. no shame, losing two years in a row, having one of the worst collapses in history, and they still talk, even if by a miracle they make the playoffs, what chance would those choke artists have to beat any other contenting team. win something before you talk. My god have some pride you are embarraing

This was one game, and Santana was great, put i told you before it all started Park would pitch 6 and give no runs, almost everyone in here would take that, If I were to say we are going to lose 1 0 to the Mets and Santana, you would have said at least we were in the game, 1 run is one run, no lets get a few more hits tonight and hope Moyer can keep us in the game like Park did last night

Easy, guys. We ALL know we won’t seel the “real” MUTS until September, when they do their usual choke routine. Let the Muts moronic fans enjoy it now (in May), because when it counts, down the stretch, the loser, gagging MUTS will go away…. ONE AGAIN!

I agree with Chuck. More than pinch-hitting Bruntlett (instead of leaving Ho), Charlie’s biggest mistake was not bunting with Ibañez on 2nd with 0 outs in the 7th. Instead, Feliz popped out.

Moreover, Feliz’ error made me cringe but that unearned run was mostly Werth’s fault for taking soooooo long to throw home. I too think, like Georgie, that he sometimes snaps out of the game… a mild case of baseball ADD.

As for Chan Ho, he was outstanding. Hopefully he can do it again and this wasn’t a fluke because this great outing gives him at least 2 more…. Despite his performance, I’m not THAT optimistic about him because the Mets rarely give Santana any run support. It’s like their lineup goes to sleep when he’s on the mound. This happens a lot when a team’s ace is on the mound (Hamels 2008 anyone?)

Oh, and how about Werth and Howard going 0-4 and striking out 3 times EACH! Ugly.
