Error Hands Mets A 1-0 Win

PhilsMetsOne bad throw.

That’s why the Mets defeated the Phillies, 1-0, at Citi Field. It was a pitchers’ duel, and it turned on a completely unnecessary throw by Pedro Feliz, which sailed past first base and allowed Carlos Delgado to score from first on a squib Fernando Tatis grounder.

But there was more than a throw that cost the Phils the game — they left 13 men on base. The biggest culprits were Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth, who each struck out three times and looked baffled at times. Credit Johan Santana, who was dominant during his seven-inning start; still, the Phils should’ve been able to claw out one run.

The Mets couldn’t score off Chan Ho Park, who turned in a sparkling six-inning, one-hit outing. The only blemish was a just-enough double by Daniel Murphy. Otherwise, Park was hitting his spots, attacking the zone and holding a wealth of confidence despite pitching in enemy territory. Scott Eyre surrendered the run, but it was unearned considering the circumstance. Chad Durbin pitched a strong 1.1 innings of relief.

Shane Victorino continued his hitting streak with an eighth-inning double. But he couldn’t score — probably should’ve. And the Phils? They probably should’ve won.

Games are lost in 9 innings by a whole team, not on one play by one player. Cut Feliz some slack. You can’t win a game with 0 runs anyway, so there was obviously more work to be done.

I really don’t care about the attendance records in Atlanta. I’m talking about the NL East champions for 14 straight years. I’m talking about having recent hall-of-fame players like Tom Glavine, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux, and Chipper Jones. It would be nice to get stoked for a series against our rival in the way that I can only assume Yankees / RedSox is. I just think “Oh, great, these clowns again.”

I’d be curious how to hear how the Mets’ “history and tradition” is so much better than the Phillies. Considering the Phillies are the oldest franchise in baseball and have legends like Mike Schmidt, Steve Carlton, Richie Ashburn, Robin Roberts, and Harry Kalas associated with the organization. The Mets have only one retired player number. Who are your legendary players? Gary Carter? What’s the tradition? A giant paper-mache Apple? The Mets are known for your 1986 Frat Party team. That’s it.

Speaking as a Philly fan living in Manhattan, I can guarantee these jerks are actually from Queens, maybe Hoboken, and possibly Brooklyn or the Bronx. They stick out like a sore thumb in Manhattan and have no idea what they are talking about. All a bunch of losers, even most Manhattanites (who – SHOCK – most often are NOT from the state of New York) look down on them.

the phillies have no chance this year their pitching is crap. and their hitting is not that good their numbers are inflated beacuse they play in mini stadium

I think that a 1-0 game doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s more strategy… every game is different. You can have a high scoring game that requires the manager to make a lot of tough decisions. I dread those games because Charlie’s not a great baseball strategist. He’s a player’s manager and the guys play hard for him but he botches some easy ones. By now, he can usually figure out a double switch but he also thinks with his gut… insert whisical comment… sometimes that gets him into trouble. He probably felt that he didn’t need to bunt but that would have been the smart decision to make.

what is the Phillies record this year 14 and 11 . I think they have 6 should’ve wins what does that mean they lost they got shutout they lost you win or you loose you don’t should’ve win

Don, good observation on “..Home field advantage will be huge between these two over the next decade..”. Because of those field dimensions for both parks it will be a likely factor with each club’s approach in game strategy for hitting and fielding. And as you said, it can also factor their choice of players in free agency and trades. I will disagree that in the case of Florida Marlins’ new stadium in the near future, the primary goal is incoming revenue from seating design/plan including those luxury box suites that can affect field dimensions and NOT with current players in mind.

As for last night’s game, someone here expressed frustration about not having patience and making “contact” with Santana’s pitches. Seriously? Santana’s 101st and last pitch was a 94 mph fastball zipping past Bruntlett for 10th and last strikeout. He was absolutely dominant and went right after the hitters from the word go. He established his fastball early and mixed in those unhittable sliders and changeups. Howard, Werth and Feliz were especially vulnerable as they looked bad in their futile swings. The National League player of the month (April) continues his amazing run of dominance and lowered his ERA to 0.91.

Hey, it’s one game and the Phillies can be forgiven for defensive lapses and the inability to hit against the best pitcher in baseball. Sure, Feliz should have not made the throw and Werth had no excuses for triple pumping indecisively (what was he thinking?) before letting go his throw. It happens in baseball and it won’t be the last time. I couldn’t helped being amused at Delgado’s remark after chugging all the way around from 1st and slid home on a sore hip. He said..”speed kills.”

Let’s face reality; that NO team will be able to run away with it in the NL East division. There is too much parity among teams this year. The Mets have sent a message that they have resolved their “closer” issue in the bullpen. Rodriguez now has a perfect 8 for 8 “saves” with a clean 1-2-3 inning to close the game.

By the way, I love a pitcher’s duel and that later innings become a chess match in game strategy. Sure, it’s exciting for fans to see some offensive explosion. However, it nice to see a proper balance between games featuring great pitching/fielding and great hitting. That is what makes baseball such a great sport.

Tonight’s game is an opportunity for the Phillies to make amends. We have Moyer going against Pelfrey. Should be a good one.

    Let’s go Phillies!

Feliz is one of the hotest hitters on the team right now.. having him bunt (something he never does, and isn’t used to) isn’t a smart move

Phillies are 8-3 on the Road, and only 6-8 at Home.. so much for that inflated numbers theory in our mini-ballpark

Santana had something like 12 matchups that started with 0-2 counts.. and you know what the batting average “average” is when you’re facing an 0-2 count.. it’s not good.

Like I said, the Mets should be more concerned about their lack of hitting against Chan Ho Park, Scott Eyre, etc..

and the fact that their rotation after Johan isn’t any good.. Pelfrey, Main, Perez, Hernandez.. all have ERA’s over 5.20

Meanwhile our starting pitching has been TERRIBLE, but with Hamels returning, Happ looking strong and probably entering the rotation at some point.. im still liking our rotation

Uh-hum…. last TWO years! I see a trend! Once a choke, always a choke. As for you woodman…..only somebody or some entity can be backed into a corner until they come out swinging.Last I checked nobody likes to lose, but give the Mets credit for focusing on their flaw which was the bullpen.Plus the NL East is still a dogfight, and anyone BUT DC Baseball will win. Ty I am not just a Phillies hater and a lifelong Mets fans,I come in here because virtually everything in the Mets blog if (Insert team, player, city, body of water, holiday, and type of bird here) sucks. and FINALLY

don’t talk about last year. that is history. talk about this year and how you lost but no you have to bring up a old story that’s two years old that no one wants to hear anymore. talk about the bad loss. talk about how the mets killed you last night. I know you are all red necks and you like to talk about things of the past.

    Grrrumpy…
I may not always agree with you but you know how to keep it real. Thanks for not being an A-hole. And thanks to those idiots from the Pimp crew or whatever your little boys club is called. It’s nice to know that 10 year olds in NYC are being properly educated. All that money you have has obviously bought you a top notch education in haow to be an idiot. Congrats. By the way, I too will be at Citi Field tonight. I will be looking for the pimp squad. should I look for little kids in Boy Scout Uniforms or little girls in Catholic School Dresses? Let me know Pimp Squad, I want to see your scary muscles.

Mets killed us?!? Really?!? You scored ZERO runs off of our worst pitcher and ONE run off an error. At least we were shut out by your best pitcher, and probably the best in baseball. You beat us last night, true, but killed us? You’re on drugs.

“talk about how the mets killed you last night.”

Only a Mets fan would call a TWO HIT night in which they scored on an unearned run “killing” a team. I suppose any game in which Daniel Murphy don’t trip and fall is killing a team.

The Phillies “pathetic” pitching threw up a 0.00 ERA against you last night.

No excuses Jason B.Box score reads Mets-1/Phillies-0.Now whether it was a clutch hit or an error, the box score says it all.No excuses.

Miner, please be objective here. No one is saying you didn’t win the game. The terminology in question is that the Mets “killed” the Phils. Which is just untrue. It was a pitchers duel and a team lost.

It’s up there with Phils didn’t win the division, the Mets gave it to them thought processes that makes most of your fans on this board difficult to deal with.

Jason B; Don’t you find it laughable that a MUTS fan uses the phrase: “no excuses”. That’s all we ever hear from most MUTS fans…. excuses!

Grrr, I’m not making excuses, I was just stating that the Mets certainly did not “kill” us. Even you can agree to that.

And to that idiot NYC, my seats are in section 122 row 6, seats 9-10. I doubt you are smart enough to read to figure out where that is, but if you can, I’ll be there… feel free to come and find me and we can chat about more intelligent things, like what your gonna wear to the Gay Pride Parade because judging from your other posts, you’ll certainly be in attendence. But if you don’t want to talk I’ll be more than happy to mix it up with you a bit. I will be wearing my phillies 3rd jersey with Utleys name on the back. If you can’t read that look for number 26 you moron.

The sun has FINALLY come out, so I am headed for the great outdoors, weeds are like three feet high out there, and since I’m just an old PA hick, I gots me some weed pullin to do!

  • u know I keep seeing mets fans talk about how Citifield is a “throwback” to historic pitchers ballparks and mentioning the polo grounds as an example, which did have a 483 CF (woah) but come one 258 in right and 278 in left? Are you guys also talking about those large pitchers paradises like Fenway, Yankees Stadium, Tigers’ Stadium, old Comisky, new comisky?

I dunno it seems nice on TV and I hear the food is good. So honest, not tryin to bait with this one, but how come there were so many empty seats last night?

  • well anyways. since there are so many mets fans here now, how come there are so many empty seats in the ball park?

I never ONCE came in with excuses thru the roof and I don’t know why I have to defend myself on this one.The last 2 years, the Phils were 1 game better in 07 and 3 games in 08, and the Mets didn’t DESERVE to be in the playoffs.I always have said in here the last 2 years that the Mets spit the bit…now WHY do I say that?Because its the truth and sometimes the truth hurts. As for woodman talikng about the Mets only picking up 2 relievers? Most people forget the Mets after the 7th Mets blew 29 leads. Now is that an excuse? No thats a fact and the Mets addressed that in Putz and K-Rod.Were the 2007 and 2008 Phillies better than the Mets?We ALL know the answer to that one.Like I said B4,NO EXCUSES.Thank You.

So if you want to call me out on excuses that fellow Mets fans have used in here….I don’t look for excuses, just results. Also Chase,I know the Mets didn’t “kill” the Phillies they won the game 1-0 on a fluke error. Now if that killed them, than they better go out there and redeem themselves and back up Moyer. Also, when it comes to the 2009 season,NOBODY has won the World Series yet.
