Cole Hamels (2-2, 4.95 ERA) vs. CC Sabathia (4-3, 3.45 ERA)

For 17 innings, the Phillies have played the Yankees pretty darn well. Game one was about Brett Myers and the longball. Game two was about contributions from young players. Then Brad Lidge threw some bad pitches.

But today is a new day, and Cole Hamels faces CC Sabathia in the rubber match to end all rubber matches. Yankee Stadium is ready. The Phillies are ready. Phillies Nation is there.

Remember last time Sabathia faced the Phillies? We sure do.

Your gameday beer: In the spirit of the Yankees’ biggest rivals, here’s Harpoon Celtic Ale from the Harpoon Brewery. And in the spirit of the Irish, this beer is a dry but complex drink — hints of toffee and various spices make this a good catch. And if you’re gonna eat Irish with it, go with bangers and mash. It’s St. Paddy’s Day … in May!

Go Phillies!

Maybe The Dipsy has his “autosignature” set up that way LOL.

My pet peeve is the phrase “me thinks”. When I see that my blood boils. Conversely, someone may hate seeing “pet peeve” in an email. I would agree with them as I hate that too.

The Giants have a ton of young arms in the minors, they feel like they can replace Cain with one of them and by trading him they are hoping to add a bat to their absolutely terrible lineup.

But are we any better off Ed with Cain? There are like 7,000,000 comments associated with that link I sent. I think Blaton has better days ahead and is pretty useful. Moyer has me much more concerned and they wont pull him anytime soon.

Well, actually, I am an arrogant ahole. Therefore, I feel my signoff is completely appropriate. Human Services. Not surprising. A touchy feely guy. And to PtheBajksl or whatever your name is…no kidding I’m not the G.M. I post them for fun. Get it? Fun.

Seeing moyer starting tomorrow just made me almost spit my drink out, but he pitched adequately against the reds (no offensive help) and he’s always been good against the Fish. I give him the win tomorrow. But it comes with a little anxiousness.

To be honest with you cxl72 I am a pretty big Matt Cain fan. I think if you can get him then go for it. I think he slots in right behind Hamels.

He is 24, and this year is off to an unbelievable start…5-1, 2.40 ERA.

Now would I mortage my future for him? Possibly but probably not. Though I do think pitching is the key, I have also seen what happens when teams trade their farm for one guy…doesn’t usually work out well. I would have no problem trading Marson and Mayberry for Cain. But I am not sure who else they could throw in there to get the deal done? Maybe Blanton just so SF has another pitcher?

I don’t see Cain coming to Philly but if he did, believe that I will be the first guy inline to buy a Cain jersey.

Dipsy, do yourself a favor, stop assuming you know any one of us on these boards. Those who do know me, know that I am the furthest thing from touchy feely, but rather someone who believes in treating others fairly and respectfully. Call it corny, call it cliche, I call it human.

I’d like to point out that in the past five games, the Phillies starting staff have gone a combined 31 innings and given up an average of less than 3 runs per start. Perhaps the beginnings of a turn-around?

AL right, thanks Ed. Lets hope that Moyer keeps up his mastery over the inept Marlins. Later…

Matt Cain is the real deal.

Why not try and get Matt Cain? He’s 24, got 3 more years left on his contract, and who knows? Maybe a couple World Series rings on his fingers.

I’d give them Werth or Vic plus donald maybe a pitcher in A or AA.

Since you have Mayberry seemingly ready, Vic and Werth become expendable..

Don’t mention it cxl72. I agree with you, I am hoping that Moyer can keep those feisty fish at bay. You would think that one of these times they are going to learn how to adjust.

I agree Manny, Matt Cain is a future ace. Hell, he would be the ace now if SF didn’t have Timmay.

    Ed, a team can have 2 Ace’s lol…..Giants do..

Little Guy, to be honest, I am not sure Mayberry is ready. Sure he had a home run and a double yesterday but other than that he did nothing. I think he still needs some work with his plate discipline before I would call him ready. But thats just my opinion.

I would not trade Donald at all under any circumstances, not even for Cain. But again, that’s just me. I think Donald is ML ready but is blocked by the guys they already have up there. I think most people in the organization believe that he will be the starting 3B next year and so I cant see them trading him now.

I completely agree with you Little Guy. I am just saying that when people talk about the Giants and their ace, they generally are not speaking of Cain. Only because Lincecum is obviously so awesome. But yeah, they technically do have two Aces.

By the way Dave, great stat. I agree with you, I do think the starters, or atleast some of them really have turned it around. I think the addition of Happ to the rotation will be a great thing for this team.

Cain is being mention for some better hitters then we can give up like holiday, Werth and carrasco might not do it but we could try,

  • Posts: 0 The Little Guy

I honestly don’t understand all the hype behind Donald

I agree mikemike. I think if Cain goes anywhere it will be for a stud hitter…Matt Holiday, Victor Martinez…guys like that.

A lot of people said that about Utley too…now look at him. Certainly I am not saying Donald is the next Utley but he is a talented guy who can play 2 and soon 3 infield positions, has good bat speed and can hit to all parts of the field. He also gives it 110% on the bases and in the field. He is a Philadelphia guy.

  • Posts: 0 The Little Guy

They’ll trade him for Holliday, then Billy Beane will trade Cain, like he does with all his stud pitchers….

Ed if the giants would take donald for cain. I would drive the bus to get him there. Everyone who I respect on scouting tell us he is a ulitity player, I have followed this kid through the minors and believe he is a decent player where as cain is a future allstar. Don’t believe mayberry is the answer for right field, the answer is in reading and clearwater. Taylor and brown. just need more time.

Donald wasn’t drafted in the first round either Ed like Utley. But i see your point we shall see.

mikemike…as you can see, I am pretty high on Donald, as I am also pretty high on Cain. Trading Donald would not be my first choice but if he was part of a package for Cain, and the rest of the package was decent, then I wouldn’t be too disappointed at all.

IMO tho, when you have a chance to get a sure thing, stud pitcher, who isn’t even in his prime, you go out and get him.

Won’t argue with you there littleguy. I’d take Cain over Peavy in a heartbeat. I think Peavy is past his prime.

agree with you there, he never really appealed to me

    From CSNPhilly.com…

But the oddest stat – and maybe most important – was that the intentional walk issued by Condrey to Rodriguez in the 10th inning was just the second walk surrendered by the Phils’ pitchers in the three-game series. Lidge walked Johnny Damon to start the ninth on Saturday in an at-bat that the pitcher said was the most costly one he had in that three-run inning.

But the Phillies starters – Myers, J.A. Happ and Hamels – went 20 innings without issuing a walk during the series against the Yankees.

    AMAZING!!

Ed/Little Guy, pitching was ALMOST not an issue this weekend. Also, I like the idea of Matt Cain in a Phillies Uniform. We even have #18 available for him, just like we had a #29 for Rauuuuuuuuuul. I also agree I ould take Cain over Peavy. I hear Peavy on XM and I just don’t like him.

I do NOT think we should trade for pitching YET, but for craps and giggles, I am going to suggest something, hear me out. How about someone like Mayberry and Donald for Cain? I mean, think about it – Giants need hitting… Although, AGAIN I don’t think we should trade at all YET, it is fun to talk about.

Like I said earlier, I like Donald, but IF, that was all it took to get Cain, and I doubt it is, but if it was then yes I would make that trade. I have heard Peavy on a few interviews and I never liked him. He came off and high and mighty.

So you want a young, projected top of the rotation guy, And you are willing to give up a ultitiy player and a fringe 4 or 5 outfield prospect. Sorry only ed wade makes those trades. By the way Michael Bourn is hitting 300 and stealing bases, and Geary has help them, so that trade wasn’t as bad as people think we won a series with lidge, which wasn’t going to happen in houston. And Houston got a starting outfield and basestealer and a relief pitcher.

  • Posts: 0 The Little Guy

mikemike, im pretty sure it is pretty lopsided trade. They got a outfielder who runs fast, not a baseball player, and a 6 or 7 inning relief pitcher for a closer who was a stud last year amidst his struggles this year. Oh yeah a Championship, you know the thing the Phillies havent won in 25 years?

Geary is currently on the DL…which might be an improvement for the Stros cause he has an 8.10 ERA. As for Bourn, he is an 8 hitter batting at leadoff and thats only because he is fast and can steal bases. Even with Lidge pitching like garbage right now I still think the Phils are the clear cut winners in that deal.

  • Posts: 0 M.P. AKA Phillies Phan SC

Phillies absolutely got the better end. Even with Lidge not pitching well and Bruntlett slumping a bit, these are quality players. Geary has not fared well in Houston. Not a total lopsided deal, like Carlton and Wise, but yeah, leaned in our favor.

My can’t you people can’t read little guy I said the trade work for both , lidge wasn’t going to get them a championship, and bourn is at almost three hundred and geary is hurt but posted 2,53 era last year. The point is both team did allright. Houston got a speedy centerfielder or outfielder who can steal a base, and when not hurt a decent relief pitcher and yes the phillies won championship. That is the way trades are suppose to be, both side get something. And how lopsided is it if lidge is one year wonder and houston get a 26 year 300 basestealing outfielder. M.P.AKA Phillies Phan Sc Geary was fine when not hurt but you don’t seem to be able to see any stats look at last year when healthy, I am not here to argue with you but look at both side, they both got something they needed. houston got speed , we got a closer,

  • Posts: 0 The Little Guy

Bourn is a 8 hole hitter with absolutely no power. Phillies didn’t need him nor Geary, so i clearly see it as a upgrade for the Fightins

The little Guy I would expect you to say that ,no power because he is a fleet outfielder who can win games with his speed. It’s is something I wish the phillies had off the bench, that’s why I was hoping Golson would be a 4 outfielder on this team, with his defense and blazing speed, it could win you 3-5 games a year. The phillies don’t need anything ? EVEN A BLIND SQUIRREL FINDS A NUT SOMETHINGS, for me to say to you both teams got something is like that squirrel so I am not trying to make you understand. lidge won us a championship and houston got speed , defense, and a relief pitcher who is not bad at 2.52 before hurt a 7 inning buy, and Lidge in Houston wouldn’t have won them a championship, they are too far away.
