Gameday 2009, Posts
Los Angeles Dodgers (22-12) at Philadelphia Phillies (16-14)
Randy Wolf (1-1, 2.95 ERA) vs. Jamie Moyer (3-2, 7.26 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Mostly sunny, 67
TV: Comcast SportsNet, ESPN
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Randy Wolf makes his second career start against his former longtime team as the Phillies meet the Dodgers for the second time in 2009.
The Phillies won game one yesterday, thanks to some slick clutch hitting by Jimmy Rollins and Raul Ibanez, and some even slicker baserunning by Jayson Werth, tying a franchise record with four steals in the game including a swipe of home plate. Now the Dodgers will get Jamie Moyer, searching for his 250th career win yet again.
Moyer hasn’t faced these young Dodgers too much, but of those with experience, Orlando Hudson is hitting .250, and Casey Blake is hitting just .091 since 2004.
The Phillies .498 slugging percentage with runners in scoring position is best in the National League. And on the power note, last night and Sunday marked the first time since August 2008 there were no home runs hit out of Citizens Bank Park in consecutive games.
The Phillies lead all major league teams in total attendance, and are second overall in average attendance (Red Sox are first, inexplicably over 100 percent for the season).
Your gamenight beer: I’ve been needing one of these for a while: Coffee Bender. It’s a beer by Surly that – you guessed it – tastes just like alcoholic coffee. Who wouldn’t like this? Okay, besides non-coffee drinkers … For dinner, turn it upside down and make an omelet. Western.
Go Phillies!

Hope the Phillies can get Jamie Moyer that elusive win #250! To come against Randy Wolf adds to it some.

C’mon Jamie, coax another win out of that trusty arm.
Mets lost today…let’s move up in the standings…so much for the niese-zito comparisons seen in the comments section onfthis blog.
LET’S GO PHILLIES!!!!

I’m looking forward to this matchup of crafty pitchers. Both Moyer and Wolf rely on changing of speeds and locating the corners. It makes Wolf’s fastball that more effective and sneaky. He will put his fastball up around the letters when least expected making it difficult for hitters to lay off.
I will also enjoy seeing Bowa (3rd base coach). Last night the TV camera caught him exploding in anger in the dugout after Rollins and Werth successfully stole 2nd and 3rd respectively (double steal).
It should be a good game. Let’s go Phillies!

Wow Bruce, it doesn’t take too much to make you happy. I will NOT be looking forward to watching Jamie Moyer try to notch win # 250. It likes watching jell-o harden and then falling on the floor. Our “second pitching coach” is having problems locating his pitches. This translates to a game of wiffleball for opposing hitters (holes up for the sinker and down for the riser). My prediction on the Moyer line:
IP 4.1 H 7 R 6 ER 6 BB 2 SO 3
Happ will take over in the 5th and go scoreless and we win 7-6 cuz Wolfie sucks too.

Wolf always looks uncomfortable pitching in this park, I think that’s why he left, and why he’ll never come back.

he is a consistent 265 hitter so him hitting over 300 for a long period of time is nive but not realistic, definitely would like to see the 20 dingers this year

nice job by ruiz to get on base to turn the lineup over. no one expects jamie moyer to get a base hit

he probably wont hit 20 at this rate, but he is on pace for about 100 rbis, which is a nice thing for your 7 hitter to have

It amazes me how much people gang up on Chan Ho, talking about how he needs to be pulled from the rotation… meanwhile, Moyer flat out SUCKS now. It’s really sad because I love the guy, but man… he is not helping us.

Moyer should not be pitching. Happ needs to take his spot. Like my buddy said today, he is a Mets fan. I love when they hit against Moyer. Its a field day. RETIRE YOU OLD GEEZER.

Obviously Mike you are basing your opinion on the last two starts. Did you forget about the 16 wins last year? Have you forgotten the other strong starts? Either you are very near sighted, or a Mets a fan.

Two bad starts are alarming, but I guess after two bad starts you want to find replacements for Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton and Brett Myers too huh? They are ALL having a rough start. Moyer isnt the only one.

Dont get me wrong, he is DEFINATELY NOT PITCHING WELL, but he has done well for us, and has done things like this in the past. I am not ready to give up on him, nor the rest of the team who arent playing like they were last year, but I would say its more of a time to take him out of this game maybe.

Moyer is cooked, honestly. He only does well against teams who can’t adjust to his strike zone (aka the Marlins). Moyer usually can go two times through a lineup. Now he’s at the point where the second time is truly a risk.
Now, Moyer is a middle reliever, not a starter.

Sadly it’ll be Happ, which means it’s likely Kendrick (or maybe Vance Worley) Saturday night for the PN game at DC.

The phillies will be eating another contract. Moyer is done people want to say he isn’t that’s great’ Meanwhile every time he pitches he is getting lit. And the people will keep saying he will come out of it look at last year. Wake up last year lee was great this year he stinks Moyer had his last hurrah, They might use him in mop up games to help them out but all these contracts they ate .

Tim, Yeah which will only make Dipsy’s prognostication that much more accurate. He had the 4.1 IP right so far. 2 more runs and hes dead on

So, Brian why should we stick with him if he can’t get anybody out now but he could in ’08? Don’t get me wrong I like the guy and was a , Moyer isn’t the only one who’s had a rough outing, but he’s also showing the least amount of progression. Don’t get me wrong, I like Moyer, he was a huge part in making one of the best months of my life happen, but I want to see this team win again above all else and if that means Moyer going, then that’s the way it has to be.

Are we eating Hamels contract too? ALL the starting pitchers are horrible this year. You must be forgetting the 11, count them ELEVEN come from behind wins this year! The Starting pitching has given up a RECORD amount of HR’s, not only Moyer. Moyer isnt the only problem. The reason the team has 11 come from behind wins? Becuase the STARTING PITCHING GET THEM BEHIND. NOT just one pitcher.

I agree Tim. I love Jamie. I love what he’s done for us. But…he isn’t capable of six innings anymore. Honestly, I wonder if they’re just waiting until he gets #250 before yanking him from the rotation for Happ. The rest of the guys have good stuff when they hit their spots. But Moyer…well, from what I’ve read, when a pitcher is fatigued, they leave the ball up more and that’s what happened in the fourth.

Matt M, like I said in my last post, the ENTIRE starting pitching staff is having problems. He had two good outings which he won, and only gave up one or 2 runs, followed by two outing of getting pummeled. He hasnt come out and getting pummelled every start.

Brian are you crazy. Yes I realize Moyer did well for us last year. I applaud him for that. He did get crushed at times and in the playoffs as well. I would of shaken his hand and said goodbye. Teams love to hit him. Its batting practice for them. Plus for Manuel to leave him in for another inning kills us again. Two more runs. Manuel just keeps mis managing this team. Moyer is done. Should of never signed him…

7-1…I am thinking the Phillies will make a comeback.
Is Moyer officially out of the rotation? Myers has been pitching better…Hamels is going to be fine, Park has had two straight solid starts and Blanton is Moyer, but not as bad.

Brian is crazy. All of our guys are capable of striking out hitters. Moyers cant k hitters. Look what the dodgers did to him that inning. All dodger fans are loving it. If fatso Charlie took him out we would only be down 5 to 1

Teams love to hit ALL the starting pitching this year Mike. Manuel is having a crappy year of managing, we agree on that! I would be saying the same thing about Moyer if he was the only one getting hit likes like a red headed step child (no offense to red headed step childred) but ALL of them are. Hamels got PUMMELED his first outing, didnt look great his second. Moyer looked pretty good his 2nd and 3rd outing. His last 2 (4th and 5th) he didnt. Those two outings most people on here were saying “thank god Moyer still has it” Look back to those starts.

Yes, The Dipsy’s prognostications can be somewhat prescient at times. After all I am part gypsy. Moyer blows. Its over for him. Park blows. It never started for him. So, lets look at our rotation on May 13. Hamels is a 1/2, Myers a 4, Blanton a 4. So, lets turn our attention to deals. Roy Oswalt comes to mind. He’s in his walk year. I would start by offering D’Arnaud and Savery. Happ would naturally move into the fifth or fourth slot.
Hamels, Oswalt, Myers, Blanton, Happ.
I could live with it. Plus, ya gotta check with the A’s and see what good young pitcher they need to get rid of.
6th and early 7th inning bullpen guys: Moyer, Park, Eyre (wince)
late 7th on: Romero, Madson, Lidge
Jack Taschner should be set on fire, put out with track spikes, and mailed back to wherest he came. What a dog.

Not sure if anyone has picked up on this or not, but I made mention of this when I was talking to my father a few days ago.
One of the primary reasons people didn’t like Charlie right off the bat was his constant ability to mismanage games. Especially in 2005. Then in 2006 it seemed like he had gotten so much better and with each year the gambles he took seemed to come out on the right side more and more. And now this year…it seems like he is back to his old self…leaving pitchers in too long, bringing in the wrong pitcher in crunch time situations…namely Taschner, and some questionable lineup changes.
Now as I recalled all this to my father I couldn’t help but remember something I said to him during the off season. What particular event meant more to me than any player signing or trading or arbitration or whatever…it wasn’t the signing of Ibanez at well over market value, or the long (sorta) term deals to Hamels, Howard etc. Or even Romero getting suspended.
The thing that scared me the most was when Jimy Williams left the team. Jimy got here for the 2006 season and was here for 3 years…3 of Charlies better managing seasons and now with Jimy gone it seems like Charlie is clueless again.
Thoughts anyone?
