Brett Myers can deliver a series win against the Marlins, as the Phils and Fish tangle for the sixth time in 2009. Florida will counter with Burke Badenhop, making his first start of 2009.The sinkerballer pitched 2.1 scoreless innings against the Phillies earlier in the season, but for his career has given up a Ryan Howard home run. Because Badenhop isn’t ready to make a full start, Hayden Penn will be ready for long relief. It’s the kind of night when the Phils should be wise to take some pitches.

Myers allowed three runs in six innings against the Marlins earlier in the season. He walked six in that game; since, Myers has been much more effective, capping with a strong start Friday night against the Yankees.

In the last rotation turn, the Phils’ rotation ERA dropped from 6.31 to 5.86. Myers is 2-0 with a 2.57 ERA in his last three starts.

This American-style lager is, in fact, Canadian: further proof those up north make some damn good beer. Pair this lager with some honey-glazed chicken, rice and broccoli.

Taschner doesn’t suck he’s just not very good but we knew he was a borderline major leaguer when he arrived and he was just brought in to soak up some innings until Romero returns and Eyre goes back to his previous role.

TMac is nuts, its a 4 run game. So a guy (maybe) takes an extra base because the OF dived. Its not a 1 run game.

    Can’t stand TMac..

On the radio they were saying that when Texiera hit that broken bat homer, that he dropped the F bomb on air, but he kind of mumbled it.. anyone know if thats try or what not?

Not the gospel according to NJ- Just what most tend to define those ‘roles’ as… If you disagree feel free to give the alternative.

NJ, a guys “stuff” doesn’t project his “number”. Daniel Cabrera has #1 stuff and gets pitching coaches fired but was released yesterday with an ERA ~ 6.00 and isn’t a number 2.

Myers HAD nice stuff but with a fastball around 91 or so isnt that good.

nice…bases loaded. now…just keep the inning alive. be patient. get a base hit. work a walk. let lindstrom get wild again and beat himself. make him throw strikes.

That was…a pretty poor game all around. Had a chance to get a few early with the bases loaded, Raul didn’t come through. And again at the end…no dice for Rollins. Myers wasn’t even looking that good, and now he might be hurt. Damn. Haha. Our home woes continue. Why?!

On MLB.com Myers fastest pitch was 92mph tonight. He has many more 88-89mph fastballs in there. His 12-6 curve ball isnt what is used to be. Its not an accident he gives up so many homeruns.

    He is what he is.

Ouch, Raul gets the Jeltz? Hmmn…maybe Myers. The whole damn team should have bags over their heads after todays game.

cxl72 you can’t go by the numbers so simplistically, if you do then Clay Condrey is our set-up man but he isn’t. A starters ‘number’ is only really based on his skillset. Aaron Harrang is a number 2, he was last year when he was getting knocked around and he is still this year when he’s doing the business.

Myers has the skillset of a 2, he just doesn’t consistently fit his billing. As for Daniel Cabrera he was a 5 because he’s the guy who has the stuff but has horrendous command so he’s spent his career in the back of rotations with his team hoping he can hold down his job at least, before being kicked to the curb which we all expected.

Its funny NJ because I think your text descriptions aren’t that bad.

The fact that you think Brett Myers is a #2 just makes everything else suspect.

Can you hear Ricky Bo on TV, “Myers is not throwing 97, his curve isn’t nasty nasty”. His stuff is just ok.

And of course you assign numbers, this is baseball, the perfect game for numbers and statistics.

That’s just beating on a guy… How many top pitchers don’t throw high nineties! Cole doesn’t, Don’t think Halladay or Webb’s 4 seamer usually goes that high. Brett has one of the nastiest curves in the game, even a passing spectator can see that pitch is just devastating when used right… His sweeping curve’s nastier than Lou Pinella’s temper.

I just mean the ‘numbers for starters’ tends to be defined by skillet. I kind of see the numbers in stats terms as recognition for what a guy has or hasn’t done. Unfortunately for Myers he hasn’t delivered the numbers to fit what he’s always had the ability to do and his fastball seems to have regressed.

3- A guy who has limited stuff or hasn’t been able to harness any of what is usually a large array of ptiches but can soak up innings and be there to make his starts no matter
    ______

Brett Myers has been a starter since 2002 and can not put it together consistently. He throws a few different type of slow fastballs, a curve, has never been an all star is 73-63 in his career.

I’m using your own defintion and IMO he fits it to a tee.

Myers also has a slider too. According to MLB.com he gave up homers tonight on the 4 seam fastball and the slider. So he throws….

    Fastball
    4 seam fastball
    Curveball
    Slider

Only one pitch, the curveball, I would consider noteworthy. And its certainly not what is was when he was younger.

I’m not a Brett Myers hater. I have moderate expectations for him and he meets them. Maybe we’ll talk again when he goes out there next week.

I appreciate what your saying I just think your really selling the guy short. Believe his fastball velocity has dropped from the 92-94 range down to the high eighties but that curve isn’t just a curve, that’s a monster curve that gets overused because he has issues with his fastball. I really wouldn’t put him into a category with the guys who have tons of pitches like Blanton who throws everything OK and nothing consistently well.

Brett’s always had the stuff he just has got the intangibles to make his curve work like Cole works his circle-change and his change up isn’t great so he uses his curve as his primary pitch which is never good for a guy who needs to be aggressive to be effective.

Cole too only has one GREAT pitch, his fastball isn’t great and his regular change is hittable as well as the curve which he admit stinks, thing is his circle-change is just insanely good and he pitches with his head.

Myers has that one very good pitch but doesn’t have the command of his fastball that Cole has despite at least earlier in his career having better velocity, thing is he has a 2 cent head on the mound and we beat down on him because we expected this guy to be a perennial 20 game winner.
