Washington Nationals (13-34) at Philadelphia Phillies (26-20)
Shairon Martis (5-0, 4.86 ERA) vs. Cole Hamels (2-2, 4.86 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Sunny, 75
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
JA Happ threw an OK game against the Nationals, and though Washington made it close, the bullpen kept them down for the win. Now ace Cole Hamels comes to the mound to secure a series win.
Hamels pitched well against the Nationals April 28, but had to leave the game early with an injury. Since, however, Hamels has been close to dominant, going 2-0 with a 2.88 ERA.
The Nationals bring Shairon Martis to the mound. The Phillies know him plenty already, giving up nine earned runs in 11.1 innings. His first outing was very good; his second outing was horrendous. Martis has been good in the month of May, going 3-0 with a 4.05 ERA.
With his four-hit game Friday night against Washington, Shane Victorino lifted his average to .293. He was hitting .262 just a week ago.
Your gamenight beer: The Trippel Belgian Style Ale from the New Belgian Brewing Co. of Colorado is a nice American version of the tripel. There might be a little too much banana flavor in it, but it’s worthy of a drink or two with its sweetness. I’d enjoy some barbecued chicken and corn on the cob with this.
Go Phillies!

OK, I know we’ve got 3 runs on these guys, but let’s *not* leave two men on…

Watching the game on MLB Gameday from Sweden. It’s 3.40 AM here and I should REALLY be asleep, but I just can’t tear myself away from this game.
It would be a tremendously exciting game if it wasn’t the WORST TEAM IN BASEBALL giving the WORLD CHAMPIONS a run for their money!!! WTF???
It’s like there are two different Phillies teams out there. There’s the offense who just keep piling up the runs and then there’s the defense who seem hellbent on handing every one of those runs back to the Nats!
If we can’t count on Hamels to put Washington away, what have we got? We have really got to get ourselves some hard-core elite pitchers to lift the whole staff out of the doldrums!!!

The Nationals have cornered the market on washed-up righty relievers.

The Phils have always played better against the tough teams and struggled against the lousy teams. Don’t know why, but the competition seems to bring out the best in them.

Glad to see the Phillies have fans over in Sweden. Welcome to the site Benjamin….on an unrelated note my favorite hockey player ever is Peter “The Great” Forsberg.

I too want to travel to Sweden one day. They give parents a year of maternity leave AND paternity leave for each child. Sign me up for some of that.

Actually, Griffin, we get 1,5 years paid parental leave, with 80% of our salary, to be divided between the parents as they see fit. And health care is virtually free. Colleges and universities are tuition free. Life’s pretty good here. We laugh when so many right-wing Americans are in a total panic about Obama, warning that he’s trying to make America a little more like Sweden. Oh, the horror…

@Benjamin: Yeah, one of the comedy news shows (Daily Show or Colbert Report) had a parody news item about that, where a reporter went to Sweden and told everybody that they were living in a socialist nightmare dystopia.

That’s good stuff Benjamin. I’ve heard nothing but great things about Sweden.
This ump’s strike zone is terrible. That strike 3 to Werth hasn’t been a strike all night.

I really am surprised about the comments from today. Cole Hamels the Ace give up 6 runs in 6 innings against the freakin nationals, and “he had on off night” Jamie Moyer gave up 4 runs in 6 innings against the Reds (who had a winning record) and “he sucks” Whats the difference, the win? What would have happened had Howard hit a grand slam in that game for Moyer and Moyer got the win? What is with the no questions asked absolute HATRED for Jamie Moyer?

Brian, and all really,
I am with you. Cole had an off night; and Jamie Moyer does NOT suck, like Brad Lidge does not. I did not take it that anyone said Moyer sucks (I may have missed something) just that he is a senior LOL
One of the problems we all have on this site, INCLUDING ME, is we get discouraged too easily. When needed, we also have to support them (and show it by booing them LOL). I think the Phillies CAN win it all again – without a trade right now.
Anyway, sorry to ramble, I just wanted to comment now since I wasn’t on during the game…
