Philadelphia Phillies (20-16) at Cincinnati Reds (20-17)
Cole Hamels (1-2, 5.04 ERA) vs. Johnny Cueto (4-1, 1.93 ERA)
Time: 7:10 p.m. at Great American Ball Park, Cincinnati, Ohio
Weather: Sunny, 73
TV: Comcast SportsNet

After a road sweep of Washington, the Phillies get back to business against the Reds.
Cole Hamels goes for the Phils, and he loves pitching in Cinncinati. Lifetime he’s 2-0 with an 0.86 ERA in 21 innings, starting with his very first appearance in the majors. The young Reds lineup – featuring Jay Bruce and Joey Votto – hasn’t seen Hamels much at all; the only player with any real experience against Hamels is Brandon Phillips, who is 1-for-12 against “Hollywood.” Hamels is coming off his best start of the season, and so far has been able to lower his ERA considerably. Hamels could lower the ERA under 4.00 with eight shutout innings.
Johnny Cueto got off to a hot start in 2008 but cooled considerably. He’s again off to a great start, getting ahead of hitters without huge strikeout numbers. He’s hittable, but he’s also the type of pitcher the Phils have historically had trouble against. He makes his very first start against the Phils tonight.
The bullpen should be well rested, with maybe the only unavailable arms being Jack Taschner and Chad Durbin, who were worked heavily Sunday.
In 14 games at Great American, Ryan Howard has hit six homers. But he’s only hitting .234 in the park.
Your gamenight beer: Franziskaner Club-Weisse Kristalklar is a familiar-looking beer, mainly because it has the look of most German hefeweizens. But Kristalklar is, in fact, a Kristalweizen, which is a cleaner version of a hef. That means it’s even easier to drink than those light, lemony beers. You’ll want to stock hard on it and eat a nice seafood sandwich.
Go Phillies!

I’m a fan of that line up also, I heard Votto isn’t in the Reds line up with “dizziness”

The lineup is awesome. I’m glad Charlie has finally got over the 3 straight lefties issue. It would be total lunacy to continue hitting Ibanez in the bottom half of the lineup, plus Shane’s speed is great down there.
I have to admit I am so nervous every time Cole starts because I feel like we have to get a win with the way the rest of the rotation is throwing. Hopefully the offense can use the momentum from the weekend to get it done. Go Cole, Go Phils!

Lets beat this Reds team. Yes they are scrappy but they have two players hitting over 280. We are the Phillies with a powerful offense and one of the best young pitchers in baseball. Mets looked like the Bad News Bears last night. LETS GO PHILLIES…LETS GO PHILLIES

I hate the 3 lefties in a row. Werth is a lefty killer and would get to hit against a LOOGY if he split up the three lefties. Now the Reds can bring in a LOOGY to face 3 lefties and then a right to face Werth.
Votto didn’t travel with the Reds back to Cincy, I don’t think he’ll play at all this series.

Ibanez and Utley can hit lefties. Even Howard has his moments. RELAX

Oh my. That was much too easy for Cueto. Hopefully our weekend with the AAA Nats wasn’t just a false sense of security for our offense.

Ha I’m not worried. I was just surprised at how easy we went down. The nice thing about our productivity over the weekend was how well the ENTIRE lineup hit so hopefully we can get something going next inning with the lower half.

last night’s Mets game reminded of that game last year when Reyes forgot to step on 2nd base against the phils and everyone was safe.
They play sloppy. Had a mets fan behind me in DC this weekend and even he said Reyes should celebrating and more time focusing on what he is doing.

Jeff the best part for me was after the game when Manuel was ripping Church and then Beltran was ripping Pagan or whoever else was out there for “getting in his way” so he couldn’t catch the ball. They were all pointing the blame across the locker room.
If we lose a game like that i guarantee Charlie comes out and takes the blame and says that he should have us more prepared or more disciplined. I guarantee it.

Miles is right, Manuel wouldn’t even call Church by name, he just said “the player didn’t touch 3rd and I’ve never seen that before.” Beltran blasted Pagan as well saying he called him off 6 times. That team hates each other. And why is Jeremy Reed, an OF with good range, playing 1B?

Sheff should be playing 1st base and Reed in RF. Why they don’t switch is beyond me..

gives up a double then BAM comes back and strikes out the next guy on 4 pitches (should have been 3). cole is back

Didn’t they bring in Reed as a 5th infielder? Or was he in there the whole time?
Also, Hollywood is throwin a lot of first pitch curveballs so it is good to see that he has confidence in his 3rd pitch.

if cole was throwing well, how many pitches could he throw in a game before we yank him?

If he is throwing well and is right around 100 before the 9th, leave him in. The ‘pen needs a rest.

Tatis started the game at 1B and they double-switched Reed into the game to play 1B. When the Mets brought in the 5th OF, it was Beltran playing the infield with Pagan and Church staying in the OF. I don’t know why their best two defensive OFs (Beltran and Reed) were playing in the infield.

Thanks for the info Griffin.
I don’t think they would let Cole throw more than 110. I guess there is a situation for everything but with the off day yesterday I don’t think they would push him past that point.

110 is definitely getting up there, but if he can go the distance that would be great. Good confidence boost and rest for the bullpen

It looks as if he won’t be able to go the distance in either case. 51 pitches through 3 sets him up to go about 7 strong. Honestly I don’t see him keeping his pitch count down tonight because they are swinging and missing so much that it takes them a couple pitches just to make contact.

100+ is a lot for this guy.
lets compare hamels to sabathia, not in terms of raw talent but in build. sabathia is a 250 pound work house machine. hamels is a 6foot something 170 pound stick in the wind. his body takes a lot more damage after 100 pitches

I didn’t think he was up there already, but your right.

JDub has to drive a ball there. Two fastballs right there on 2-0 and 2-1 counts. Maybe they should put an asterisk on that “most underrated player” tag that says *against lefties. Ha.

Is cole throwing two kinds of fastballs or something? There is one that is coming in at 86-88 and another one that is coming in at 91-92. Ah crap, screw you Bruce.

Well very Hamels like 2 hits one a home run. He makes few mistakes but when he does the are big ducks, he still needs to work on that.
