J.A Happ was moved to the starting rotation and Chan Ho Park was moved to the bullpen.
“I’m disappointed,” Park said. “I lost the job as a starter, which is what I wanted. I don’t make the decision, but I lost the job. I’ve got a new job. I have to figure out how to prepare to be good with the new job in the bullpen. I have good memories of the bullpen last year. I know it’s not easy, that’s why I don’t like being in the bullpen. But the team expects more from me out of the bullpen. I have to do my best.”
Park could be available out of the bullpen as early as Wednesday. Happ will pitch Saturday against the New York Yankees.

Good timing for this. Park was given enough starts to attempt to prove himself, and Happ won’t burn out by having to pitch a full major league season.

Based on his performance in spring training it was worth giving him the shot. Park seems to be taking responsibility for his outings and accepting the move to the bullpen. Personally I don’t see any regrets, if he worked out we got a decent 5th slot, if not he moves back into the pen which is where he started anyway.
Oh well, nice try bro.

As much as I love the switch, there will once again be tons of pressure on Happ. Last year they spot-started him against Santana in front of a huge July 4th crowd at home (he pitched great). This time around they throw him in there at Yankee Stadium against a hot-hitting lineup. Yikes.
You can do it J.A.!

Well… I suppose it was inevitable that Happ would replace someone in the rotation down the line. The manager’s (as well as the fans) patience obviously ran out on Park. I personally thought that after two very good starts, Park finally found his rhythm until that very disappointing outing this past weekend. Let’s hope he can be more effective in the bullpen in taking over Happ’s former role as long relief.

I like this move, I really think it’s where Happ should have been all along and that Chan Ho is going to turn things around for us in the pen. Now if we could just get Blanton and Moyer to turn the corner I’d be feeling great!

Get rid of Park. I love his comment. The bullpen is much harder and I dont like that. You stink where ever you pitch…

Wow….what a shocker. If we all knew that Park was gonna suck major how come the Phils didn’t know? Moyer is next to the pen and may thrive as a “situational” lefty and/or long man. As for Aaron Cook, he has pitched in relative anonymity for the Rockies. He’s better than Myers and would be a #2 here. If the Reds deep six, perhaps Aaaron Harang would go on the market. He’s would be a good 2 for the Phils. The Phils just CANNOT go into the August with Cole, Brett, and Blanton as their playoff pitchers. And won’t.
Myers, Donald, Marson for ??????????? I’ll give you a hint….a damn good pitcher.

Tim. Whats this rot about Burnett for Marson/Carrasco? I would drive those two to the airport to get that deal done. Why would the Yankees do it? Are they “rebuilding”? Can you give more specifics about this story please? Thank you.

I think this paves the way for park to be traded to another team as a bullpen arm (for a AA level prospect) and for majewski to come to the pen.

Happ ate a lot of innings out of the pen. Let’s hope he can do the same when starting and that Park can accept his new role. I would personally call an end to the Park experiment and release him. If you can’t pitch 2 innings on 5 days rest how can we expect him to pitch every 2 days if necessary. I can see why he doesn’t like the pen.
Good luck to JA Happ he pitched himself into this spot and he deserves a chance to start.

Just like him starting you give Park a few runs out of the pen and see if he can throw strikes and work an inning or two every other day, you really lost any trade value in him now, so that is really not an option, Love Happ in the rotation, and I admit when I am wrong, and gloat when I am right, and at the end of ST I thought even though Park “won” the 5th spot in the rotation, I did not think by enough, and Happ should have started the whole year, and I think Park would have been happier out of the pen then. They gave him a shot, take it like a man a prove you are not worthless and be big time out of the pen. Go JA

[...] really can’t believe it took this long, but it was announced earlier today that Chan Ho Park is being moved to the bullpen, and J.A. Happ would take his spot as the Phillies 5…. Personally, I didn’t understand the decision to give the job of 5th starter to Park coming out [...]

[...] Chan Ho Park moves to the bullpen, and J.A. Happ moves into the rotation. Happ’s pitched well out of the bullpen this season, limiting opponents hits, although his walks are a bit high. He pitched well in 2008 in limited duty as well. [...]

Its about time. Moyers you know what is on the line tonight. They pulled Park before I thoguht they would but after I thought they should. So that tells me Moyer may not have as long as he thinks he has. They are clearly getting very impatient with this rotation.
Also, Myers isnt going anywhere. They may actually resign him if he keeps pitching this way, but it would be for a big hometown discount and it would be to be a 3-4 not a 2. Im ok with that as long as its well understood (and by that I mean they go get a 2) that hes not the number 2 guy.

Aaron Cook would not be a 2 here since he isnt even the Rockies’ best pitcher. Hes a 4th starter, but a good 4th starter. Guys that would be 2′s include Buerhle, Cliff Lee (though Im still not sold), Dan Haren (not getting traded), Jake Peavy (dont want him, will be proven to be a fraud once he leaves the friendly confines). Guys like that. The Blue Jays are not moving Halladay because theyre actually a good team this year. Aaron Harang is ok, but I think overrated by one good year. I think they really have to be creative here actually to find the right guy.
Aaron Cook would be a welcome addition, but dont expect him to be a number 2 when his career numbers arent head and shoulders above Brett Myers anyway. But hed be better than Moyer and Id trade Kendrick and maybe a good relief prospect and a throw in for him..

Geoff-
I agree with you on Peavy/Halladay/Harang /Haren but what about Arroyo? He’s got guts. Had a wonderful 2nd galf last yr. And has pitched in big spots.
*The only part of moving Happ to the rotation I worry about is how will our pen be? Happ kept us in soooo many games and ate up soooo many innings for us. I can’t see Park replacing Happ with the same production.

I would absolutely be thrilled with halladay, but with the year he and the jays are having i doubt that would happen. Trading Marson would be a BIG mistake, considering Coste is terrible, I’m sorry but he is just awful offensively and it does not sem as though a fair amount of the pitchers are as comfortable with him as they are with Ruiz. Marson is solid defensively and great offensively, he is a great back-up catcher to have and next year I think he will take over for Coste. As everyone knows and has stated over and over again we need a solid pitcher, I’m not sure who we’ll get or even if Amaro is smart enough to get the right person if anyone at all, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see. As I have mentioned before ANY player is available at ANY time, and I bet most people did not think manny was going to leave the bosox at the beginning of last season…

Man The Dipsy, You are obsessed with trading for a pitcher. They are not going to trade for one anytime soon.
I am not sure who told you the crock about Burnett but it is just that.
That being said I think Happ will be fine and Blanton will get it together, if he doesn’t then they will bring up someone.
Bottomline.
I don’t see them making a trade for a guy with a big salary at this point they are already one of the highest salaries in baseball

Geoff says` “..The only part of moving Happ to the rotation I worry about is how will our pen be?” Well…Happ appeared in 12 games in relief (21 innings). Half of those appearances were for the purpose of giving the bullpen “relief” as those disproportionate scores indicated the eventual outcome of the games he appeared in. I don’t wish to belittle Happ’s role in the bullpen but let’s just say that in most cases, he was not 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even 4th choice in the bullpen to come in when the game was on the line.
Of course, like all fans, I’ll be rooting for Happ to do well as starter against a hot team, the Yankees this Saturday.

well. about 7 weeks too late. Park was a joke and they all knew it. they had to give him the job even though they didn’t want to. they promised him a chance to compete for it and when he pitched lights out in clearwater they had no choice. but i have to think they knew all along that it wasn’t for the long run.
good to see Chan Ho has accepted his demotion rather gracefully it seems. I was worried he wouldn’t.

Darn, if reporters’ questions caused too much pressure, even when Charlie was being very supportive, how is this guy going to hold up, even in relief, during a playoff run?
Said Park, “I put pressure on myself. It’s too bad I couldn’t enjoy when I made it after spring training. I felt like I was pitching like it was spring training with (reporters) asking me all the time, ‘Are you going to still have a job or not?’”

Nobody wanted him to win the job is part of the pressure he’s talking about..
Every single Phillies fan I ever talked to about it wanted Happ to win the job outright.. just because we already liked him.
Happ deserves the spot.. Moyer deserves a longer leash than Park..
Hopefully Park will be effective when we call on him

I hope he will be, but the only sample of his relief pitchiing under pressure that I really got to see was against the Phils in the playoffs, which if I remember correctly, was every game or almost every game, but less than an inning each time, not any long relief situations under pressure. I kinda recall a blown save, but LA was in trouble that inning before they brought him in.
Agree Moyer deserves a longer leash. Hope it doesn’t hurt us much, but he has earned it. Also, what else would the Phils do with him? He hasn’t pitched relief in recent memory, and I doubt he would survive out of the bullpen pitching several times a week.
