If Mayberry Stays, He Plays

Charlie Manuel told reporters he wants John Mayberry Jr. to stick with the major league team for a little while. It’s good news for the slugging outfielder, who will attempt to prove his worth as an everyday player.
But Mayberry can’t prove anything if he stays on the bench too much. Moreover, the Phillies can’t determine whether Mayberry could be an everyday player for them – which would then allow them to explore possibly moving Jayson Werth for pitching. So if they’re going to keep Big John Stud up for a while, they need to start him as much as possible.
Tonight would be a start. It wouldn’t be a bad night to sit Raul Ibanez, who despite his hot play, is 0-for-6 lifetime against scheduled Florida starter Andrew Miller. Maybe tomorrow would be a good time to sit Jayson Werth, mired in a 2-for-27 slump, against righty Burke Badenhop.
The Phillies need to give Mayberry a chance to succeed and show his value. In the long run, it would benefit the Phils in spades.

5% available means unavailable and teams do comment on the rumors that have foundation. Don’t you think if Bard or Bucholz are available then the Phils have ‘looked into it’ and at ’95% unavailable’ have realised being able to deal for either of them is virtually impossible.
Also you can’t see prospects so broadly as play them or trade them because there are prospects like ours littered around the league in the same situation and the only prospects blocked in the Phils system are those only able to play 1st and 2nd. A la Mike Costanzo although hopefully not with the same result our prospects are not ready to be everyday major leaguers.

I honestly don’t think Halladay gets traded regardless of what happens with Toronto. If anything, this year has shown Toronto they are closer than they thought to competing.
And where’s the 4th lefty? Bedard would replace Moyer, not Blanton.

Quoting Ken Rosenthal is like quoting the guy on the corner… Fox are an entertainment only bias source of baseball who’ll throw everything out the window for a good ‘rumor’ and Ken Rosenthal fuels that with his stars only brand of baseball analysis.
Lets think of it this way, the Phils are looking into trade opportunities at value. Any other serious speculation here is like a dog chasing its tail.
Some of you guys get so serious and invested in trade ideas that are frankly ridiculous because if the Phils could pull them off so could anyone else. Throwing out some names and ideas for some banter is one thing but too often it goes too far here and waters down good fan discussion with dishwater fan analysis.

I do agree Dipsy but I don’t think that you can give up on guys too early. It’s a lot easier to fill gaps when you money to work with and the best way to accomplish that is to groom talent. That doesn’t mean you give up on someone because they don’t do well in a one-week callup (I am eluding to Geoff’s comments that we’re going to “see what Mayberry’s got” over these next couple of games) but homegrown talent is cheaper than FA guys like Cook and Marquis and any of the other names being tossed around. Those that are blocked are expendable but you have to get value in return. You can’t just throw them away for a guy like Jason Marquis.
I love how people assume that guys like Marquis are going to come here and shut it down… well, they’re not. You’re likely going to overpay for those mid-tier guys because you feel like you have to do something. Unless we can persuade Peavy to come here or land an Erik Bedard, I’ll pass and keep the prospects we’ve got.

NJ. Huh? Yes, for this team it IS as simple as play em or trade em. Did you say “Mike Costanzo”? Wow. LF – Blocked (Ibanez) SS – Blocked (Rollins) C- I am not trading Ruiz. You’re NOT going to slot Donald into CF or LF this year. Mayberry either. If you do you’re crazy. This is WS team not a rebuilding team. You wanna trade Vic or Werth, go ahead but make sure a suitable replacement comes back along with the pitching you better be getting.

I’ll throw something else out there…i’ll probably get a ton of crap for this but here goes…how about Pedro Martinez? rumor has it, (go ahead NJ, freak out, i used that word) that he’ll take 3M plus incentives. We wouldn’t have to part with any prospects, and he COULD be a solid contributor as he tries to show he’s still got some tread on his tires.
again, call me crazy, but looking to get a bit creative.

I would rather poke my eyes out than give Pedro Martinez $3M to stink it up at CBP. Thanks, but seriously, no thanks. Go after Penny, most logical choice. Won’t cost a ton, can step in and be a solid 3 behind Myers and Hamels.

Oh my god how fickle can you be, HOW MANY TEAMS REPEAT? how many teams don’t even end up near the playoffs after a World Series appearance. Do you see the Angels or Red Sox or even Cubs going crazy to throw everything in for now? NO because they all understand there’s an intellegence to this game and the Yankees proved you can’t buy a championship by mortgaging everything for now. How can we insult the Mets for the lack of intellegence and understanding of a roster and then suggest we do the same??
LF is not blocked, Ibanez deal does run 3 years but a player is only blocked WHEN HE’S MAJOR LEAGUE EVERYDAY READY and both Victorino and Werth are nearing big money years with an already escolating payroll. Yes I forgot to mention SS but 3rd is not blocked, catcher is not blocked, the bullpen and rotation is not blocked with barely any lengthy contracts.
I love Marson but he’s been on the scene 5 minutes and is not a raw catcher, Mayberry is starting to develop into a viable major league and needs minor league seasoning. Donald has got caught up in a numbers game but he hasn’t forced his way up and some of you talk like these guys are shoulder to shoulder with Ryan Howard.
THE PHILLIES ARE LEADING THE NL EAST! Have you guys not looked at the standings? You can’t act like a repeat and even a shoo-in for the play-offs is an absolute… The team is improving and the front office will make improvements yet some here are talking like its the bloody apocolypse… GROW UP!

No-one wants Pedro and we should give him $3m and a guaranteed roster spot when no-one else will? Are we really more intellegent about baseball than the scouts the teams employ.
If some of you are going to hold to such ridiculous ideas about the game please become scouts and execs, proove the rest of us wrong.

OH MY GOD N.J. YOU FREAKIN’ FREAK! You sound like Joe Banner. So lemme get this straight…..you wanna keep guys around to replace Ibanez IN THREE YEARS!!??!! You don’t wanna throw all in cuz the odds are against us repeating???????? I can’t believe I’m hearing this. Trade Ruiz???? Thats right Doanld is caught in a numbers game. Know why? HE’S BLOCKED. My ears are burning right now. F it. Trade everyone and rebuild so we can win the Series in 2013. Good lord! TIIIIIIIMMMMMM!

The only argument against a trade right now for a top starter Like Peavy is they are hot and what kind of message does it send to the fans.On may 26 you are throwing in the towel. Unless you are making a trade with boston for there excess pitching, or tradeing one ace for another, it makes sense to wait. The teams don’t want to send a message that they are packing it in at this early stage. so after thinking about it yes they will wait most likely until trade deadline.

Would the Phillies be willing to trade Lou Marson for Brad Penny or Marson/Donald for Aaron Cook? Those are the types of deals I can see the Phillies looking into.

Griffin they traded three better prospects for Blanton, So For cook they would give that plus Drabek, based on what they gave for blanton, And why not how offend can you get a 33 year old lifetime 4’58 era with 1100 plus innings and over 1300 hits given up he has given up 200 more hits than innings pitched. This guy is a superstar.

There is no way the Phils would do Marson for Penny…thats too much for an oft-injured #3. The Phillies have some “Savery” younger prospects they could give up. I wouldnt give up more than 2 prospects for Penny, and I dont think the Sox would get much otherwise.

You’re right mikemike, they did give up more than that for Blanton. I wonder if Penny would be the cheapest option then, since he’s a FA at the end of the season. (I doubt he’d be a Type A since he was hurt last year, right?).
As far as Cook, he’s in the first year of a 3 yr/$30 mil extension. The GM and manager are on their way out, so trading Cook may hasten their own exit. I’m not sure if Cook will get moved.

“Freak” is not an insult. “Douche” is. If you considered an insult I apologize. What I won’t apologize is questioning, albeit in harsh terms, your “wait til next year, or what the hell, even the year after that” approach when we’re one of the best 5 teams in the league now. Foot on the gas. You will see in the next two months or so that the Phils feel the same way. And the word is “acumen”.

my bad on the spelling… Being one of the 5 best teams doesn’t mean you start making every deal you can, did it help the Yankees? Did the Red Sox do it after breaking the curse? Answers NO
The Phils aren’t waiting till next year, it’s a record payroll with a good development system in place which will solidify the Phillies standing as a powerhouse for years along with the Red Sox, Angels, Cubbies etc.

You’re actually serious. Which is sick. Dude…Myers is an FA, Eaton comes off next year, the rest of Thome comes off. Money is not an issue. Do you remember a guy named Manny Ramirez that got traded last year to the Dodgers? Sabathia to the Brewers? Those teams sucked before those teams got them. They made the playoffs. And thats just last year. So, lemme get this straight (and I didn’t say “make every deal you can”…please don’t misquote me). You would propose we keep our pitching intact and wait till they come around and continue to groom our young players so we may have a solid team for the next five to seven years. Am I getting that right?

I dont see the point in even talking about second hand pitchers to replace Moyer and/or Blanton.
They are starting to do what they are expected to do….. 5-6 innings pitched and 3-4 runs given up.Keep us in the game, then our offense takes over .We should be more patient.
But if we can land Peavy,or a pitcher of that quality,..thats different..go for it!
I think I’m more worried about Lidge than Moyer or Blanton at this point.
