The Clearwater Threshers played the Charlotte Stone Crabs yesterday, and Kyle Drabek put together his best start yet: a complete game shutout. He allowed just five hits and a walk, striking out seven in the full nine, a 4-0 win.
Drabek is now 4-1 with a 2.48 ERA in A+ Clearwater.
In other action:
- Michael Taylor went 5-for-6 with a home run and four RBI in Reading’s 8-7 win Friday over New Hampshire. Taylor is second in the Eastern League in home runs (9), second in RBI (37) and third in hitting (.342). His 1.006 OPS is second in the EL.
- Lou Marson went 3-for-4 with an RBI in an IronPigs 5-3 loss to Rochester. It was another blown save in front of Carlos Carrasco, who went seven strong, striking out six while allowing two runs on six hits.

Taylor and Drabek are without a doubt the real deal. Glad to see Lou doing a good job.
Looks like Carrasco may have corrected whatever it was that lead to his awful stretch. His last few starts have shown marked improvement.

I hope this convinces the Phils organization not to get rid of Drabek. This kid is going to be the real deal in just a couple of years.

This shows our awesome depth within our farm….Which means we need to deal the extra pieces….Jason Donald doesnt seem to have an opening soon in the Majors…and Hes a piece that many teams want…Trade one of the good pitching pieces and perhaps Werth (So Mayberry can play Haha) and acquire Peavy or Bedard..If that isnt enough …toss one of our B pitching prospects…Not all these guys can make it our club..

Because of Myers’ unwillingness to disclose his on going problem (goes back to last season according to his agent) with the hip to management and allowed the inflammation to fester over time and necessitate surgery, the Phillies are in a bind of sorts. The other clubs would have an edge in possible negotiation for a trade knowing the Phillies’ dilemma on need for starting pitching. If the temporary fill in from within the organization (Kyle Kendrick?) is a disaster, that can prompt further desperation and a crossroad decision for the team. Are the Phillies willing to go that extra mile and perhaps unload some of their best prospects and perhaps a regular on the team (not to mention financial debt) as a gamble for top tier starter? Personally, it would be a shame to mortage the team’s future.
Gm Amaro wisely stated ..” With two months still left before the July 31 trade deadline, he said few teams have declared themselves sellers. “We feel we have a good enough club that in July we’re going to be a buyer,” Amaro said. “We’re certainly in that mode. We’re not sure about other clubs. The pool of talent and the type of player we’d pursue may not be available for another several weeks. You can’t say, ‘Pretty please, trade this player to us.’ That’s not how it works. It takes two and sometimes three teams to tango.”
With time and patience for the next several weeks, the Phillies will have a better idea of their situation with rotation that includes probable Kyle kendrick. As they await for sellers to be available, we can only hope the Phillies’ problem has a way of working itself out with Kendrick perhaps providing the missing link to the rotation.

With the OF prospects we have in AA, and Mayberry, it would not shock me if Amaro packaged Victorino or Werth in some sort of package offer…probably Victorino due to his smaller contract. Not that I want to see either of them go, mind you, but I can see it with the depth that we appear to have coming up in the next couple of years. I think the club wants Mayberry to stick in the majors for time being to see what he’s got at that level. If he impresses, then it makes the other two a little more expendable.

I’ve been saying this since I first saw Drabek, the kid has the makings of the second coming of Cole Hamels. He is going to be an absolute superstar and I can see him coming up next year as a 4 or 5 starter. He’s recently had Tommy John and he’s already pitching quality games; he is going to be a super star and the Phils would be very foolish to trade him away. I truly think that someone within the franchise will step up and throw some quality starts b/c Lord knows we can outslug any team in the league. The phils are going to be fine and I see big things coming for next year with this quality farm we have going.

It is time for Drabek to move to Reading. How good is Taylor? I wish I knew more about this guy. If he really is the next coming then I would not feel so bad about trading Vic or Werth for some pitching.
I really hate to let either one go. Vic is such a spark plug and Werth, when he is on, can carry a team for a few games. Still, I would do it for a front line pitcher.
