Phillies Drop Heartbreaker, Fall To .500

2009 Recaps, Posts
In one of the worst losses in recent memory, the Phillies charged back in the ninth, but let it slip away again in the 10th, losing to the Dodgers, 5-3.
It was brutal, really, aside from two bright spots. The first: Cole Hamels was fantastic. He went seven innings, giving up one earned run (a seventh-inning home run by fire-hot James Loney) while striking out nine. The second: The two-out, ninth-inning rally that started with a Raul Ibanez single, carried over with a Greg Dobbs walk and capped with a Carlos Ruiz double. At the time, it was a godsend, truly a chance for the Phillies to redeem themselves.
However …
Chad Durbin quickly surrendered two runs in the 10th, putting the game officially out of reach for the home team. That added onto the already-harrowing points made throughout the game: Chase Utley is disgustingly slumping (now a .278 hitter), Ryan Howard can’t hit anymore (another 0-for-4), Shane Victorino has lost his swing (again, 0-for-4), Jimmy Rollins still can’t do it (1-for-5) and Brad Lidge cannot go an inning without surrendering a run (fifth-straight appearance giving up a run).
Is Utley injured? Is Lidge injured? What happened to Victorino? Will Rollins ever rebound? Can Charlie Manuel manage a game correctly? All these questions are impossible to answer right now; instead, one fact remains: The Phillies are suddenly a .500 team once again.

Question: Why use Stairs in a tied game, when you know he has Broxton in his book?

I have a feeling I’m going to be doing this a lot the next few weeks. I hate the dog days of the Phillies season.

I gotta think Chase is hurt.
either his hip (doubt it by the way he started)
but i think his foot is worse than he lets on…because ever since Pelrey hit him on his foot, he hasnt hit a lick.
The lineup as a whole is terrible
1-5 hitters go 1-20 with 11k’s.
enough said.
the pitching is coming around (except Moyer) now the offense is dreadful
it’s true what they say…repeating is a difficult thing to do

Terry, we are 1.5 games back. You are acting like we are 15 games back behind the Mutts. The more you gloat now the more of a goat you will be later. And why are you on Phillies Nation? I dont remember this site having ANYTHING do with the Mutts.

By the way Terry (loser) since we are talking about not having a game 7 in the WS last year, and the last game being game 5. Who won that game?

Terry can you answer me these simple questions…
1. Who blew a 7 game lead with 17 to play in 2007?
2. Who won the NL East in 2007?
3. Who blew a 3 game lead with 17 to play in 2008?
4. Who won the NL East in 2008?
5. Who won the National League in 2008?
6. Who won the World Series in 2008?
you should know that it’s May….
call me when the Mets dont choke in September and when Jose Reyes doesnt choke or when David Wright doesnt choke or the rest of your pitching staff doesnt choke.
Thanks.
Sincerely-
THE WORLD F’N CHAMPS

One more question for Terry, to add to Mike’s list:
Who choked against a very mediocre Cardinals team in the 2006 NLCS, despite having a vastly superior team talent-wise??

ahhh very nice Mark B.
so, TERRY…”laugh” it up about a Phillies loss to the Dodgers…in May
because that has no effect on us as fans.
because you see, we won the WORLD SERIES last year…
take a hint from other Mets fans and keep your mouth shut because right now all you’re doing is feeding the stereotype of Mets fans..
and if you don’t know what that stereotype is….it’s being an ignorant a-hole

TERRY…
we’ve heard this before in 2007…
that worked out well.
then we heard it last year in ’08, and that really worked out well.
All you are now is a Cub fan, “next year is our year”
you can say it as much as you want, it doesn’t change the fact that your team has no chemistry. That when August turns to September your team knows it will collapse…
because it has…
two years in a row.
Johan can’t pitch everyday do you know that?
and when he has an ERA under 1, and still has TWO losses…
say all you want, the point is the Phillies win when it matters. The Mets win in April and May.

Dodger fan here. Jon Weisman at Dodger Thoughts linked to you.
Be proud of your team — they refused to go gently. From a Dodger fan perspective, this was a game that was in the bag — one strike away with Carlos Ruiz at the plate! Carlos Ruiz! — and yet the Phillies refused to lay down and die. I have a new player to hate, and his name is Carlos Ruiz.
Phillies fans are likely disappointed by the team’s record at the moment, but just remember what we ALL need to remember — it’s May. Anything can change. The Phillies are a good team and they will be in the race in September.

Hey Terry baby relax. The Mets have not won since 86. They are not exactly running away with this division. Beat the Braves first. Your team is not any better. Your outfield is horrible. Your pitching is average. Maybe wright can get a hit with runners on base..

Jeff I have problems with your statement first of all the mets out field is not horrible. beltran is 2 in the league in batting gold glove center fielder 2 years in a row Mruphy looks like he is going to be a great player. sheffield only has 501 home runs. As for the average Pitching Santana 0.92 ERA very average two cy youngs very average. One gold glove very average. John Maine looks like he is back to form. Pelfery had back to back great starts. Livan Hernandez may not be great but he gives you a chance to win every day. Wright is hitting better with men on base.

that might be the most pathetic answer ive ever heard.
“the mets blog was down so i came here”
really?
wanted to see what fans of the DEFENDING WORLD CHAMPS were saying.
talk about the losses all you want…it has no affect on us like we said most of thsoe losses were inthe early 1900′s.
before we were even thoughts in life.
thats all you have. talking about 10,000 losses.
fact is.
Mets = CHOKE ARTISTS
Phillies = WORLD CHAMPS
