Some Phillies players have discussed the fifty game suspension of Los Angeles Dodgers left fielder, Manny Ramirez.

Brad Lidge

”It makes you wonder, was he doing it last year?  Every time something like this happens, you feel cheated a bit. Was he on the substance when I had to pitch against him in the postseason? Naturally, it makes you feel upset.”

Matt Stairs

“If you know the stuff isn’t on the list, why take it? I know I’m not very smart, but I know I can figure that one out.  There are a bunch of guys who are going to have to stop taking all this health [stuff] and go back to being chubby and having fun.”

Shane Victorino

“It’s sad. I feel bad for him, but I guess he brought it on himself.”

Charlie Manuel

“I used to do a lot of work with him as a hitter.  I knew how good he was. He’s a great hitter. I know his talent. I’m sad. I don’t know what to say. I’m just sad.”

My first reaction was that he was took something that was from GNC like Romero and I was a bit defensive, but I don’t buy this whole “oh, the doctor injected this into me and I didn’t know what it was” excuse. It was a PED and his ingornace on the matter is inexusible. He deserves his suspension.

Charlie’s gotta be hit pretty hard by this. After all, Manny was practically a protege of his in Cleveland, wasn’t he? He must feel that this reflects pretty poorly on him.

Winners never cheat – cheaters never win. Never been more true – as long as you’ve got the definition of winning right.

I laughed too about Stairs’ comment.. but at the same time.. being chubby prevents him from being able to do anything except swing the lumber really hard.

which, for his job is fine.. for other guys that play actual baseball.. it doesn’t work that way..

He’ll tag one off K-Rod before the year is over though.. the foul-ball he hit was a shot

My whole view on the PED’s.. is Tell me that the players aren’t trying to find substances to say they took as their excuse.. Romero may or may not have been taking something from GNC.. but how do we know that he wasn’t ALSO taking something else too

If I was a cheating-player, I would try to find a substance that would “cover my steps” if I tested positive for something else..

I think A-Roid tried to do that, because I heard in multiple places that the things he tested positive for weren’t actually in the substances he claimed he used.. I doubt the media wanted to put money into testing what JC Romero may or may not have used

I wonder what Charlie really knows about Manny. He could provide some insight into his Cleveland years. Was there even a reason to think he was doing something during any of those years? Or was it just the last few years when he start to hit that wall and was like Bonds and couldn’t handle being less of a player so he turned to something else.

Manny is a great hitter, but always being able to produce just raises red flags these days. Anytime you ask yourself how the heck a guy can do what he is doing you just have to wonder. I love Manny Ramirez as a hitter, love his style and his approach and swing, but I just don’t know how much of his production was a result of doing PED’s. It’s not that it made him a great hitter, but it certainly could have made him produce more. Beefing up his numbers. I for one am still a fan of Ramirez I just can’t look at his overall numbers the same. He’s still got a great swing.

um “gangsta pimp” do you think you could mayeb comment on here with a little class and dignity rather than sounding like a phucking idiot. wowo you guys beat us and it was our own fault especially in that first game. we play quality ball EVERY game not just once in awhil like the pathetic muts, so how about you keep your “gangsta” comments to yourself or I dunno comment on the Mets blogs like a normal phucking person.

Lets just not respond to posts that have alternating CaPitAL leTtERs.. OR.. start deleting posts that have nothing to do with baseball ..??

I’m not even mad, I’m impressed. To be able to alternate capital and lowercase letters like that …

Stairs is great. Manuel truly feels pain for Manny. We all know Charlie loves Manny. Lidge’s quote made me laugh though. I was thinking to myself that Lidge should feel even better about winning the NLCS over the Dodgers, who may have had a cheater on their team.

    Nevermind the Romero facts…

Yea, Tim. It takes a while to alternate between a CaPiTaL and lOwErCaSe. Pretty impressive.

I bet Lidge is really angry cause he suspects Pujols was juicing back in the day.

I agree with Don. Is it possible to put up an approval system for the postings, Tim? I really like your blog, and enjoy your insight. This flame war stuff is just really annoying. If a Mets fan wants to come on and discuss real baseball, that’s fine. I just hate reading all the inflamitory comments.

Agree with all about all the guests that post garbage here. Talk real baseball or go away. If you are here to start flaming, I am sure there are plenty of joints in NYC that you can flame away in!

agreed. so I’m going to be an armchair GM here and throw out the question of what on earth are we going to do with this starting rotation. Pretty soon the lineup is going to get discouraged because their pitching is not backing them up AT ALL. This team has the best lineup in the league and frankly our pitchers are good they just stink this year. My vote is to send Myers back down to the minors for a few starts. That did him a world of good last year and it might be the shock he needs to get back into it this year. I would then pull Moyer, even though he is my fave and I respect him greatly, and put Happ in the rotation. Park and Blanton both had solid starts on their last outings, but you’re never sure which pitcher is going to show up on any given day so I say have carasco waiting in the wings to take over one of their spots if their pitching does not become more consistent. We also should trade one of our up and comers for a consistent pitcher; I’m thinking (King) Felix Hernandez for jason donald and possibly kyle kendrick. he’s young and his stats are very impressive, can we get him and are we smart enough to is the question. any thoughts on what to do with the rotation?

I still think it’s too early to make a move. I’d give it 2 – 3 more times around the rotation before you make a choice. It’s still only the start of May. As much as i think this rotation needs help, i think we’re all still in football mode. Baseball is a slow moving game with slow corrections needed.

In July, I think we’ll have a better idea of what to do about the rotation. I’m all for bringing in Happ and Carrasco and letting them have their chance, though. Let them light a fire underneath Myers. Blanton will come around. He’s a good pitcher when he’s on, and not as bad as Myers when he’s off.

Myers is a tricky pitcher I mean I would be hard-pressed to remember a game where he didnt give up a home run and usually once he does he settles down and pitches fine. It’s like he needs that one mistake to get his head on straight and remember how to pitch. I don’t mind him giving up the run so much, but it always seems to be a three-run shot after he’s walked someone.

Felix Hernandez wont be available..thats liek trading Cole Hamels. Why would you trade your young ace who is still cheap? For a bad starting pitcher (Kendrick) and Donald – who is still a prospect…the GM that does that should be fired in Seattle…

Guys available could be Jake Peavy, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Erik Bedard, Aaron Harang, Bronson Arroyo, Doug Davis, Roy Oswalt, Mark Buerhle, Jose Contreras, Kevin Millwood, Chris Young, among others.

Moyer, Park, and Blanton have each had ONE good start this season..

Moyer also had two starts of 6 innings, 4 Runs (one less run and we sing his praises about that one too)..

The Mets, who have a very good lineup, have pounded Moyer twice.. and so people are ready to pull him from the rotation?

I think if anyone gets yanked for Happ it needs to be because of 3 consecutive bad outings..

Blanton and Park had nice starts their last time out.. I’d love to see that again.. but right now its too soon to pull one of your starters for Happ…

I would have been fine with Happ starting instead of Park the other night.. but we’ve seen how good each of these guys can be when they are on their A-game.. Park was VERY impressive the other night.. Blanton looked great in St. Louis.. Moyer looked great against an aggressive Marlins team (then got spanked by a dangerous Mets lineup).. what to do, what to do

The Phillies would go get a guy liek Doug Davis or something like that for cheap.

But if the starting pitching really doesnt improve then they have to go and get a front end guy…Id suggest Buerhle if Chicago is out of it.

i know but i can always dream for king felix…

I mean, Jason Donald and one of the Phils young arms would be the primary chips to trade. If Carrasco doesnt improve by July, they very well could move him with so many great young arms behind him, including Mike Stutes and Kyle Drabek coming not too long from now.

The Mariners wouldnt even take J-Roll and prospects for him…theyd still laugh and hang up the phone…

    I thought Buerhle was a Fly-ball pitcher?

kyle drabek has the stuff to be the next cole hamels…and i’m sorry but NO player is untouchable from being traded. big players get traded all the time and look at miguel cabrera is a top 5 player and he got traded from the marlins. and donald is a great player on a lot of other teams he would start and SS, so i think he will be very valuable in a trade deal down the line. edison volquez would also be a valuable pitcher top pick up.

OK it was just a though or rather a dream to get hernandez i mean we need SOMETHING! and the chances of getting halladay are slim with the jays in first place…

They gave up Josh Hamilton to GET Edison Volquez.. they aren’t giving him up for anything short of Victorino AND Carrasco.. That would never happen..

Cabrera got traded because the Marlins didn’t want to pay him what they knew he was worth.. I LOVE the fact that he’s not in the NL East anymore.. he might win the MVP this year..

every player is available inder the right circumstances and for the right price.

Untouchable without giving up way too much that it hurts your farm system….also. Just because a team is bad doesnt mean theyre looking to trade away anyone thats good. They want to move salary for young, cheap talent. Thats how baseball is, you know that. Thats how hockey is too.

The Marlins made a good trade dumping Cabrera (wasting away in Detroit), and Willis (in the minor leagues) to allow young talent to flood their roster.

Moyer should just hit the DL and then call it a career if this keeps up, seriously. Its not fair to other pitchers that he gets this big strikezone and when he doesnt get it, hes not a viable major league pitcher at all…enough already.

sounds like manny is just playing dumb to save face. id say the same was with romero, but jc is actually trying to get a lawsuit against the people who misguided him right?

ive always hated manny anyway and i cant wait for the dodgers to tumble down that NL west

I’m always amused when one starts and several others jumped in the “baseball fantasy” game of tossing names of players on their wish list. I’ll stay in the real world and look at the game with the manager’s perspective in mind. I’m not complaining mind you, enjoy what you’re doing. ;-)

It seems as though we are all getting mad because the Mets right now are a better ball club. We Pretty much got our buts handed to us by these muts.

In a 1-0 game that they scored on an Error.. and a bad outing by Jamie Moyer.. and they couldn’t manage any runs against the rest of our bullpen?

They scored a total of ZERO Earned Runs against Phillies pitchers not named Moyer in 2 games..

They won.. I wouldn’t say we got our butts handed to us though

I mean, really, how tough can this be? Stairs said it all in the simplest terms-If you’re not sure, just don’t take it, pure and simple, easy as pie. I feel the same about JC, sorry, but ultimately each player is responsible for himself, there’s really no gray area, you test positive, you’re out.

I really simpathize with Charlie and any other manager he played for. They were betrayed by Manny, especially like Uncle Chuck who was close to Manny.
