Rosenthal: Phillies Looking For Starters

On Saturday’s FOX broadcast between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Yankees, insider Ken Rosenthal talked about options the Phillies could be looking at.

“There is no question the Phillies want another starter, maybe even two starters the way this thing might evolve. In a perfect world, they would get a number 2 to fit behind Cole Hamels, someone better than Joe Blanton, the pitcher they acquired last season. Obviously, we’ve heard about Jake Peavy this week. He probably would not want to come to Philly. But you’ll be hearing about guys like Erik Bedard and Jarrod Washburn, who both pitch for the Mariners, maybe even Roy Oswalt. The Phillies are going to inquire and be in on every one of those pitchers.”

I’d rather have blanton then either of Washburn or Bedard. Washburn is washed up and Bedard is too high priced and not worth it, they’ll ask for a King’s ransom for him and consider him their ace.

Bedard is a fragile crybaby. Washburn is almost as old as Moyer. The State of the Union:

    Hamels is a strong #1
    Myers is a solid #3
Happ looks like he can be a dependable #4
    Blanton is a fine #5.

The problem. Moyer is nowhere near a 2. What can you do? No team is perfect.

We’re so much better without Park fouling us up every 5 days and the non-Lidge bullpen looks strong.

No way we get Oswalt. Houston won’t let Ed Wade make another trade with us.

I’ll take Bedard thank you very much. But it will end up being Aaron Cook in the end.

I know this might sound absurd to some people, but I personally think that we should be putting Shane in as trade fodder for an elite pitcher. I know it was a small sample size, but Mayberry seems ready for the majors. Victorino(other than Ruiz/Coste) is our weakest link in that line up. Rollins was, but now that he’s coming around he isn’t anymore. Victorino had his career year last year, and it wasn’t that great. Everyone thinks he is a lead off man, but his pitiful OBP and lack of patience says otherwise. I know we’d lose a tad bit of defense in CF, but I think Werth can still cover enough ground. Victorino would be awesome trade bait if you’re trying to get Harang, Halladay, Oswalt, etc. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a trade of Victorino and a lesser prospect being able to get it done to land someone elite(unless it is Halladay of course then it would take a lot more.) What do you all think?

The problem is most teams willing to part with an elite pitcher (who in all cases will be older and reaching his free agent years) want young controllable players who they can build into a core of controllable young players with little service time to worry about, Victorino doesn’t fit that profile.

Harrang’s a logical suggestion for a team that would jump at Victorino but I’m not sure Harrang’s more than just a shot in the arm to a greater probelm due to his question marks and contract situation. Tough to see how Houston parts with Halladay unless it’s a GREAT deal for them and if and when Halladay becomes available there are going to be a few teams willing to throw a lot at Toronto for him.

I know it’s not sexy but the Phils have to develop starting pitchers on the farm, it’s the only way to have a shot at a Cain, Gallardo or a Cueto unless the Phils are willing to take a reach for a minor-league swap for a possible Danks or Volquez type.

The insiders wil bleat on about the Phils needing to deal for a number 2 starter no matter what. Just look at the AJ Burnett situation after the insiders inflating his value last year (and am talking about the 5 year megadeal more than the terrible start). The Phils have to stay true to a plan and I think Werth is a more sensible trade chip than Vic. The problem is the Phils make deals on what a player has done trying to turn less into more, the trend has to stop,

Bedard struggles to get to the 5th inning WHEN he is healthy enough to pitch. Keep him and WashBurnedOUT in Seattle.

I want Halladay but I’m greedy I don’t wanna give up much to get him..

I’m willing to part with Carrasco, Savery, Marson, Donald, Mayberry Jr. but that won’t get it done they’ll at least require some of guys I want to hang on to Brown, Taylor, Drabek, Worley, Knapp, Happ

mlbtraderumors says Matt Cain is available but they want mlb offense so I’m thinking Mayberry Jr, Donald and Marson won’t get it done they’ll want more established guys…. but if they were willing to except, I’d do it.

    Maybe we need a closer?

I saw that on MLBTR. Ruben should be all over Matt Cain. They want productive offense, so my guess? Jayson Werth in a near-even deal. Maybe theyd have to add Carrasco, maybe not. It should be built around Werth though, and I would make that exchange in an instant.

My offer for cain is Werth, Carrasco, and ptbnl like galvis or donald, Worley

yeah..ptbnls are usually less noteworthy, but not always. micah owings was a ptbnl in the deal for adam dunn last year.

but Werth & Carrasco is a highly generous offer for Matt Cain I feel.

I know that what I’m about to suggest won’t exactly produce thrills and chills for those who love to indulge as GM wanna be’s looking for “sexy”, big name attractions to add to their wish list. (chuckles)

There are several unsigned free agents still available. And using former GM, Pat Gillick’s philosophy of picking up proven veterans (remember Jose Mesa?) and giving them another chance, I’ll list a few that won’t cost the team an arm or a leg and without the need to trade away our prospects.

Pitchers Paul Byrd and Mark Mulder. For the bench, Damion Easley, Luis Gonzalez, Moises Alou, Paul LoDuca and Jay Payton

Geoff, why would you want to give up Werth for anything? Werth is such an underrated and amazing player. He is right now our 3rd best offensive player. He has power and speed and a great OBP and above average SLG. He is also a key piece in this offense because he can legitimately break up the lefties. Victorino could probably net us more and he’s not as good of a player as Werth and he’s overrated.

Phil the problem with Werth is , he has power, speed, good outfielder, but never proved he could handled right hand pitching, and he is almost thirty, nice player but not a player you can’t replace.

ill part with carrasco, kendrick, and one of are 2 catchers in the minors for roy oswalt. i think thats a pretty fair good deal. I mean like we didn’t really burn them Bourn is batting like .300 for houston this yr.

The only name mentioned on this blog that in my opinion is a true #2 starter is Oswalt. Imagine going into a playoff series and your three starters are Hamels, Oswalt, Myers. Other than Oswalt, I would NOT mortgage the future on any of the other starters listed. Ibanez is 37 Mayberry will be ready in 2 years to come up and start. Feliz is in his late 30′s and will need to be replaced. Despite Ruiz’s great play, our production from the catcher position is near the bottom of the league. What has hurt us is that Moyer looks like he is done and we signed him to two years. THAT my friends will come back to haunt us.

mikemike do you just assume things, are you dumb, or do you actually look at stats? I know you don’t look at stats because if you did you’d know Werth has a 122 OPS+ off of RHP this year. How is Werth just a nice player? He’s the most underrated player in baseball probably. Nobody ever talks about that guy and yet he is arguably the best offensive RF in the NL. Don’t make stupid comments without having factual information to back it up.

Mikemike, don’t mind Phil and his nasty comments. He doesn’t always have good manners. (chuckles). Phil is probably defensive about Werth because of his recent struggles with AB’s against good Yankees’ pitching. Werth has shown flashes of brilliance in hitting, fielding and running the basepaths since Manual has given the player a chance to play everyday. On the other hand, it’s maddeningly frustrating to see Werth be inconsistent with his AB’s especially against righthanded pitching. Sure, you can use a certain stat like the OPS to support Werth but it’s on the field in crucial game situations is where we all see the results.

In the meantime, I’m not quite ready yet to join Phil’s fan club for Werth until I see more production from him in the crucial months ahead. ;-)

Bruce, you just anointed yourself the most unintelligent baseball fan on this site(in my opinion anyway.) You have NO idea what you are talking about. Yeah, sometimes Werth looks bad, but sometimes Utley does too. Utley went on a week long slump and nobody but Don M mentioned it at all. Now you’re going to come over here and trash Werth who is our 3rd best hitter? That’s brilliant of you.

I am SO tempted to get into this little disagreement, I do concur with Bruce though, Werth has games where he is absolutely brilliant, then has a slew of them where he looks like he’s not even there, offensively or defensively. That’s all I’m going to say because I have a ton of work to do outside, want to get done by game time. Later.

Oh, Phil, I’m logging off now so I won’t get to read how badly you slam me until later, lol.

I just don’t get any of your logic at all? He is the 3rd best offensive player on the team? Shane Victorino has looked pretty mediocre leaning more towards playing pretty poorly all year, and yet you guys are praising him and trashing Werth? Werth has been just as streaky as Utley and you won’t mention that at all. I guess you guys don’t look at stats when you make these absurd statements?
