News, Posts

Mike Francesa of WFAN (660 AM in New York) reports the Phillies and Padres are discussing a deal for Padres pitcher Jake Peavy.

Peavy yesterday rejected a deal to the White Sox. I wrote about the potential for a deal today.

Hat tip to Beerleaguer.

I still don’t think it’ll happen, but this is very exciting.

Even the rumors make me happy. Not sure it will happen, but I’d trade anyone on the farm for him. Carrasco, Donald, Marson, Savery, Drabek, whoever.

I HIGHLY doubt this would ever happen. I don’t think the Phillies are on Peavy’s “ok” list.

  • When have the Phillies ever pulled of a deal for a #1 pitcher?
The closest thing was Moyer, and Blanton but they haven’t gone after a true #1 in my lifetime (44yrs).
I would love to add Peavy to this staff, but I have a wait and see attitude.

I am always leary of hearing reports like this out of another town’s media. If the Padres and Phillies were really talking about a trade seriously, don’t you think someone in San Diego or possibly Philly would be reporting about it?

I would deal anyone on the farm, including the arms, but don’t want to loose Happ. The kid looks like a solid #3 or #4 for the next 10 years if he stays healthy.

If the front office can keep the current MLB roster intact, let’s go get this done!!! Instantly makes us the top team in the NL. How nice would it be to trot out Hamels, Peavy, Myers and Happ in the playoffs?? Can you say repeat??

Won’t happen, if he wouldn’t go to the Yankees because it’s a bandbox there, what makes anyone think he’d come here? Plus the Phils have been so stingy when it comes to their top prospects that unless they’re dealing Carrasco/Happ/ and an ok ss i don’t see a deal getting done. If the WhiteSox weren’t putting their top SS prospect in the deal why should we, we’re putting our top 2 pitching prospects that are MLB ready in the deal. Hell I’ll throw Savery or one of Worley/Stutes in the deal.

Unless he cites at least one source, even i he eluded to “internet rumors” I wouldn’t buy anything Francesca says. I view it ia s a ploy to motivate Mets fans to make some noise about improving their own team before they fall farther back of the Phillies.

I say let’s get it done. While we have the core together and healthy now. It would be nice to put back to back Championships together instead of decades until another one. I don’t think it will require us to give up all our good prospects. I think it will on require two like Carrasco and Donald and two lower level to get it done.

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, the Cubs and Brewers are the favorite to land Peavy (according to MLBtraderumors.com). I’m just not going to pay any attention to this so that I don’t consider how nice our rotation would look with him. I think our main options are guys like Doug Davis, Jon Garland, and Brad Penny.

Also Buffalophilsfan….don’t get too high on Happ yet. He hasn’t even started a game this season. Even Park can pitch scoreless innings out of the pen as he showed yesterday. I’m not ready to declare him as someone will be a #3 or #4 for 10 years, not sure how you could be.

Did you ever heard of Steve Carlton traded to phillies for rich wise. I think he was a number one

DUH Miles! Because he’s freaking J.A. HAPP. HELLO!?! He’s like the best pitcher on the face of the planet and the best pitcher voted to be the Cy Young this year by all the writers!

    Mike,

Was thinking the same thing Rick Wise for Carlton just came to mind. I would give up any of the farm but Drabek, I know I have said it before I think he is a stud and we may see him in the bigs in the next year.

    Hamels
    Peavy
    Drabek
    Happ
    ?

    in 2 years wow

I think it actually could happen.

Think about it, yes Peavy vetoed a trade to the AL but this was mainly because the White Sox had a worse record or equal record to the Padres at the time of the deal. Yes the White Sox stadium is a bandbox like ours but I think that plays less of a factor.

Peavy would lose a lot of credibility and rap around the league if the World Champion Phillies went out agreed on a trade for him and he says “oh i’d still rather stay in San Diego” (and continue losing) Any future Hall of Fame Pitcher needs to relish an opportunity to win multiple world series not shy away from it. I think Peavy would agree to a trade to Philadelphia not necessarily because he would love to come here but the repercussions and backlash of him vetoing it would be too much for him to handle and I would hope that his natural desire to Win would beat out his doubts about coming here. If he doesn’t have this drive and fire to win a World Series regardless of the team or location then we should not want him anyway.

You are probably right Miles. I just got a little jacked up with the Yankees series a few hours away and this Peavy rumor. I do, however, love the way Happ handles himself on the bump … not just this year out of the pen but the few starts down the stretch and in early July vs. the Mets last year. I am looking forward to his start tomorrow. I really think he has the physical and mental makeup to be pretty special. His demeanor on the mound is very much like Cole’s.

    I want Peavy now

Peavy probably would not accept a deal here, but if the phillies were able to put together a package that satisfied the padres and peavy entertained the thought of waiving his no trade, charlie manuel could be the deciding factor, I read that one of the reasons he did not want to go to the white sox was because of ozzie guillen, since peavy is from the south maybe he would be more open to playing for manuel because of their similiar roots.

i was lukewarm on peavy, but just looked at his stats for this season… SD can’t score for him, otherwise he’d be 7-2 with nice Ks… bring him on. Heading to the game tonight, will report back tomorrow with tales of yankee fan buffoonery.

I understand buffalophilsfan, I do. I have been thinking about the weekend series non-stop since the end of the game yesterday. I am probably more psyched about this series than I am about a series against the Mets. I just wish they weren’t on a nine game winning streak.

they have to lose sometime… the phillies arent the orioles.

I think the Cardinals #1 in 1967 was a future Hall of Famer named BOB GIBSON.

If this is anything other than a NY radio guy trying to get the fans all worked up, and make sure the fans start DEMANDING the Mets go get Jake Peavy, i’d be shocked.

They could use Adrian Gonzalez more than they need Peavy..

Steve carlton wasn’t a number one are your kidding, What does carlton have to do with gibson in 67. I never said he was cardinal number one, and guess what he was as good or better than gibson. As much as I never saw a year like gibson had when he had a era of 1.12 as a starter. Steve carlton is one of the top pitchers in the history of baseball, and remember since you bring up Gibson, did he win 26 games for a team who only won 57 that year, almost fifty percent of the teams wins were carlton. what is a greater accomplished to win half your teams games or have a low era?

Peavy is great and all except when it counts…take a look at his playoff stats…two starts….12.10 ERA.

Don’t get me wrong I like Peavy and all, and would take him in a heart beat but I think he is about a year or two away from not being worthy of the title ace. I wouldn’t trade the farm for him. Look at how many trades the Yankees have made where they gave up 3 or 4 prospects for a guy…how did that work out?

The Yankees were great when their farm players developed into studs not when they bought and traded for all stars. I would be ok with giving up Carrasco for Peavy but not Donald, D’Arnaud, Brown or Taylor.

Don disagree on peavy verus gonzalez. peavy would mean more I believe. Pitching wins tiltles most times. Second after reading a lot of sources I found no one reporting phillies going after peavy so you must be right its just N.Y media talk.

This is absolutely a media thing. Like others said, this is more about trying to get the Mets active then it is the Phillies.

Why do the Phillies need Gonzalez? They lead the NL in runs and homer runs…and where exactly would you put him? Last time I checked we had a 1b…for the next few seasons.

I wouldn’t mind trading Carrasco, Marson and Donald but will that be enough to get it done?

I think Dominic Brown should be untradeable. He is gonna be a stud.

Forget trading for Peavy, the O’s released Adam Eaton today!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ed no one mention Gonzalez to the phillies it was to the mets.

    From Phillies.com

Manuel said they would keep 13 pitchers at least for the first game of the three-game series against the Yankees. He said Stairs or Dobbs would likely serve as the designated hitter. The Phillies could option left-hander Sergio Escalona following Friday’s game, if they feel they next an extra right-handed bat off the bench to face lefties Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia on Saturday and Sunday. … The Phils are 14-5 on the road this season. That .737 winning percentage on the road is the best in baseball. The Phillies were one of only six teams in the Majors to have a winning record on the road last season. … Philadelphia leads the National League with 56 homers, despite playing just 39 games.

Now that we have a chance to get Eaton back….lets go for it!….
Forget all this talk of Peavy. We dont need him.

i think if a guy like peavy is available the phils have to at least make an offer.

my buddy got excited last night when they won their 9th straight. i had to tell him not get too excited cause they lit up adam eaton and the orioles. Phils end the yankee win streak this weekend for sure.

if they are able to sign him to a long extension, I’d give whatever they want for him. Carrassco will never be anything near Peavy’s level. Neither will Happ. that’s for damn sure

Im sure they did make an offer, but if Peavy doesnt want to play here then why bother forcing it?

Long extension? Hes signed for like 3 MORE seasons..whoa there. thats a lot of money already committed to him.

Geoff would you rather pay him 40 million over 3 years or Myers 36 over three that’s what you are talking about

Miles and Kevin hit it on the head regarding the Peavy rumor that lack reliable sources and spread by a NY radio broadcaster. Mike Francesa is host on a Sports talk show that will indulge in rumors with the purpose of creating feedbacks with phone calls coming in from listeners. It’s the same purpose as Tim Malcolm adding every little rumor to his blog to create feedbacks for his site.

IF Peavy didn’t wanna come here, someone from the Phillies would come out and say that “we inquired about Peavy, as we do with all good players, its just a matter of us doing are due diligence, and we were told that Peavy would only waive his no trade clause for certain teams and that we’re not one of them”. I’m not hearing that. He would say that only to shut everybody up.

    Jon Garland 13:1
    Eric Bedard 10:1
    Aaron Cook 6:1

not necessarily, the phils could afford both…i stil like aaron cooks groundall rate. id make that move today…

  • Posts: 0 Jeff of Nova

I think you have to look at it this way: When a Stud like Peavy comes available, you have to at least inquire, especially since it is our greatest need. Like Dipsy said if Peavy said no or is totally against Philly then they would come out with a statement.

As far as post season stats on Peavy, remember he was the Ace of that staff and all the pressure was on him to do it all cause their team couldn’t hit a ball off a tee to save their life. Here he would not be a Ace since Hamels is ours. I know Peavy has a Cy Young and great regular season stats, but Hamels has the WS MVP, NLCS MVP, I would never trade those 2 for a Cy young ever! Having support knowing your team can hit their socks off is a very appealing thing for any starter. Thats Why Myers doesn’t want to leave here, the bats here can hide his mistakes.

i don’t see how the front office would think that jon garland would help out our rotation at all.

    agreed!

Well Mr. Red Death, probably beacuse he’s better than Moyer, Happ, Blanton and maybe Myers. Other than that, no reason I guess.

And, I don’t think Garland is that great at all but he’s just the type of guy the Phils like. Mediocre to just a little above average. Blanton, Lohse, Moyer (when they got him). Lots of 3.5 starters. By illustration, if Myers was on another squad, the Phils would be interested in him because he’s….just ok. But remember, there are a lot of BAD pitchers in baseball.
