And on May 5, the Phillies took first place.
The Phils climbed to the top of the National League East with a 10-7 win over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. The offense gets credit again. Shane Victorino went 4-for-5, coming a triple short of the cycle, scoring three runs and driving three in. He had his hand in half the Phils runs. And he made a dynamite catch to save a few runs in the sixth.
Jayson Werth added a mammoth three-run home run that he delivered to his family, visiting from Illinois. Every Phillies regular scored a hit, including starting pitcher Brett Myers, who began a three-run third with a single.
On the mound, however, Myers had a two-faced night. He was strong at the start, securing easy outs off Albert Pujols and Co. But he gave up two quick solo home runs in the fourth, struggled through the fifth and couldn’t escape the sixth, completely losing the strike zone. Scott Eyre let in a run via a sacrifice fly (that Victorino catch), ending Myers’ line at 5.1 IP, 5 ER, 9 H. Not good.
Clay Condrey struck out Pujols, but had two-out trouble in the seventh, showing he’s best in smaller doses. Ever the bulldog, Ryan Madson collected a 10-pitch, four-out hold and Brad Lidge — despite giving up a home run to nemesis Pujols — finished the game.
A slight further damper on the win: The Phils made some boneheaded plays in the field and on the bases. Vic was picked off. Ibanez misplayed a ball in the outfield, then got doubled off on a line drive.
The win puts the Phils at 14-10, alone in first place over the Marlins. Pitching is still shaky (especially starting), but the offense continues to pull the team above water.

Myers is starting to get that lost look in him that he had last year which I find quite disturbing. I thought he looked fine tonight even when he started getting hit but once he was getting lost in the strike zone in the 6th inning, he looked like all his confidence was gone. The man needs to keep his head up!
But the Phils looked great tonight. I always feel the Cards are a good test for this team and they certainly passed these past two games!

Lidge is a beast, and can get almost anyone out…Except Pujols. Pujols definately has his number, but hey, who cares if Lidge gives up a one run HR and get the rest out if you are up by 3 or 4. Lets keep this going!

I felt bad for Lidge, but the look on this face when Pujols as almost priceless, even though I felt bad for him. It was just a look of “not again”. Lidge will be just fine though, a solo shot with a 4-run lead is nothing to sweat!

It was kind of an ugly win for the Phils but will take it of course. To use Tim’s words..” boneheaded plays in the field and on the bases” and Myers reminded us (after yesterday’s fine outing by Blanton) that problems still exist in the rotation (worst ERA in NL). However, the offense continues to percolate and bailing out the starters. That is the obvious reason for the 14-10 record. My concern now is that when the offense eventually have struggles that goes with a slump, will the pitching (starters in particular) bailout the offense? IMO, Hamels is the obvious key for stabilizing the rotation. His success can have a positive domino effect for the rest of the starters. The sooner Hamels is fully healthy and back in rotation, the better for all.

Puhols has everyone’s number. Now serving number 300. Be thankful when there’s no one on when he hits it out. No shame in that. Phils beat a good team 2 nights in a row. Tim’s comments well founded though. Still lotsa work to do here.

Phils are living on the unsustainable…poor pitiching…sooner or later it will either spell our doom, or will need to be rectified.
However, no one is pitching consistently well…all are pithcing poorly in the rotation. It is not if we can demote one, leaving the good behind…I suspect, while the hitting is functioning well, we need to demote one of the cruddy starters…bringing up one of our AAA pitchers…to hopefully allow them to be brought in while the bats are hot…
otherwise, this ship is taking on too much water, at a far to faast a pace

Hey Lidge vs. Pujoles works in Lidge’s favor more often than not. It’s just when it doesn’t, he crushes him. But so what? It was a meaningless home run. He didn’t get lit up after it. He retired the side. That’s all that matters at the end of the day.

The Phils win 7 of 10, sit in 1st place on May 5 and the underlying tone here is doom! This is a good team all around and after 162 games we’ll be back in the playoffs.
@Tom G; we’re not taking on water
@Bruce; offense is carrying the team right now, just as it was built to do. This team was not built to win games by a 3-2 final.
Lastly the new parks in the NL are all hitters parks and guess which team has the best power. The Phils!!!
ps: a thank you to all the goofy architects designing these bandboxes

I have to agree with Keith, I truly think that the starting pitching is just trying to find some consistancy Myers has looked better, and IMO will come around, JB looked good and seems to be on his way to giving the Phillies 6 or 7 innings and 2 or 3 runs and outing. Moyers is Moyers and will win 13-15 games. Park is getting one more chance, and I think if he stinks it up again I like JA and alwas thought he should have been the 5th starter. The bull pen overworked? Yes, but pitching well, Eyre got out of the jam he was left giving up one run. Mad dog pitched1 1/3 of scorless ball right. And Lidge tried to get a fastball by Albert with a 4 run lead and no one on, and got smoked. But he bounced back and shut them down with some good pitches. HAve a little faith and believe most of the starter will be ok in the long run

This should be Park’s last shot as a starter. He has shown us nothing to date. Also, Brett Myers is not earning his keep with hot/cold performances like last night. He just “falls off the mountain” from good pitching to bad pitching, from one good inning followed by a sinker. He earns too much to be pitching like a rookie.

Vic has hit in 14 straight games and now has a .308 BA. He was hitting about .220 a week or so ago.

myers looked better than his stat line indicated. both home run pitches were good pitches that got jacked. ludwicks was a low curveball and molina who is not known for his power jacked a high and

inside fastball. thats a hard pitch to pull out of a big park like busch stadium. condrey pitches better in tight spots not when we have a lead. keep him as a set up man

Im glad theyre in first place despite their pitching woes. Myers did look decent but he has control problems and is not very efficient at all – which is the problem with most of their starters minus the few good starts blanton and myers have had and the good starts hamels had. too many pitches thrown early in teh game. not efficient enough.
the team ERA is pushing 7, which is dog dirt terrible. somehow theyre still winning (offense). Theyve gotta straighten the pitching situation out soon though, this cant continue.

When Moyer and Blanton gives us more Quality Starts you aren’t still going to cry about them are you, this can’t continue.

Myers starts to get himself in trouble when his body opens up to the 1st-base side, instead of throwing through home plate..
that takes all the bite off his pitches, and has them tail back over the heart of the plate..

Don, you should write a letter to Dubee, because he’s obviously having trouble fixing Myers mechanics.

last nite watching the game i noticed when the camera panned to myers in the dugout he was wincing. i wonder if he got hurt running the bases or something early in the game and thats why he fell off a cliff in the 3rd or 4th inning which ever one it was? i didn’t think he look to bad up to that point. even the pitches that he threw to molina and ludwick weren’t that bad.

Blantons capable of being a good number 3 pitcher. I know hes capable of many more performances like the otehr night. Weve seen him do that before. Weve seen him stike out 10,11,12 batters before. I like Blanton, Im just simply saying the staff as a whole is severely either lacking or not performing to its potential.

It’s not Dubee’s fault… Myers wasn’t doing that to start the game.. I think when he starts to get tired.. his shoulders fly open and he fades towards 1st base when the throws..
They know that, they’ve drawn lines to home plate in the bullpen and made him step on the line and stuff to stay square.
What I noticed was his left foot was going towards home, his upper-half was opening towards 1st.. They’ll see all that on the tape

keith pretty much nailed it, but i can understand why people aren’t THAT enthusiastic yet, and the reason for that is we all know this team can still play even better. when you consider they’re playing well enough as it is to be in first place, to take 2/2 against a very good cardinals team (and against two of their best pitchers), and continue to slowly but surely build momentum early in the season… then you start to realize just how scary this team can be to the oppositon!

I blame Dubee for all of this. At some point the pitching coach needs to take some heat. Brett is a good pitcher, he just needs it to be coaxed out of him.
Also, the Lidge vs. Pujols emnity is probably my favorite storyline in baseball.

you blame the coach, for the pitcher not throwing enough good pitches?

there isn’t a team in the big leagues that wouldn’t LOVE to have a red light clutch player like Shane Victorino on their team and patrolling center field every day. I’d take Shane over an overpaid primadonna prettyboy like Carlos Beltran any day of the week. Shane is a true gamer, and a winner.
