Jayson Werth is a thief; he stole second, third, and home. All in the same inning.
It was his team leading sixth steal of the year and fourth of the night, tying Gary Maddox and Sherry Magee for the franchise record of most steals in a game. Magee did it twice in 1906, and Maddox did it in 1978.
Werth became the 49th player in Major League history, and the ninth since 1942 to steal second, third, and home in the same inning. The last Phillie to complete this feat was Pete Rose during the seventh inning on May 11, 1980. The last major league player to do it was Eric Young of the Colorado Rockies in 1996.
It is rare that one player can do such a task, but Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner each did it four times, the most in the history of baseball.
The last Phillie to steal home was Carlos Ruiz as part of a double steal on June 26, 2007.

Loved watching it over, and over, and over again last night (Werth stealing home). I think the steal of home was planned out well and executed perfectly. Kudos to Werth.

Ok if anyone watched the game last night you can help me out here. I was watching the game and at one point saw the back of Russell Martin’s jersey and it read J. Martin. Was that a jersey “malfunction” or was that something that Martin did by going with a middle name or another name. Did anyone catch that?

My wife and sister are at Baseball 101 today at CBP and Werth is the guest speaker. Hes gonna be fawned over by all the ladies there today. That was a helluva a steal of home!!!

I think i heard before that’s his mother’s maiden name or something??
Has something to do with the “J” before Martin..
just googled it.. his mother’s maiden name is/was? JEANSON.. so its a tribute to her..
He should concentrate more on not being terrible at baseball the past two seasons

And this is why I’ve always liked Werth at the top of our lineup… I liked the Phillies last season when Werth was No.2 and Shane No.6… but I understand that our lefty-heavy lineup changes things for this season.
I also think Werth had that extra adrenaline to “prove them [Dodgers] wrong” for not sticking with him (thank God)!

you know what though, I’d still like him as our catcher, he may seem overrated but how many catchers can you honestly name in recent memory that can steal bases, more that 10 in a season? None, Ruiz stole a couple of bases with the Phils in his tenure here but mostly as part of double steals to take the eyes off of him. Martin can do it on his own without help from a double steal. I like him as a catcher personally, he hasn’t been as good as he was 2 years ago but you can’t have an All Star year every year.
Thank you Don M, I just looked that up myself just to make sure I wasn’t seeing things, that’s a nice tribute to his mom though similar to Maurice Jones-Drew and adding the Drew because of his grandfather who died before the NFL Draft the year he was taken.

I used to like Martin.. in part because he helped me win a fantasy league in 2007..
but watching him last year in the playoffs.. just cry about every single aspect of the game that didn’t go his way.. and the whole Dodgers’ team that all of a sudden was a bunch of tough guys after Manny Roidmirez got there last year..
Martin is a punk and he sucks defensively
There is more important things in baseball than your Catcher having 10 steals a year. you know?
Werth HATES the Dodgers.. because they never gave him a chance after his first wrist surgery didn’t go as planned.. he REALLY gets up for beating them

That play was incredible… I’ve never seen a player steal home on the throw back to the pitcher. That takes some balls… and there is no room for indecisiveness. That play took all of the wind out of their sails… a great baseball play. When Werth is tuned in, he is one of the best in the game.
Gotta give some credit to slap C-HO-P… he was in a tough spot but he came through in a big way. My assessment still holds true… he likes pitching in pressure games but he doesn’t like pitching with men on base. He has shut down innings where he’s attacking the zone and getting guys out but he also has innings where guys get on base and he looks like he’s throwing batting practice. To his credit, he threw strikes and he kept guys from crossing the plate. It was funny to read the game thread on here… there were a lot of moans in the first inning. People gotta relax…
Lidge had another tough outing but he made some good pitches… Utley could have made that catch (to shallow CF) but that ball that Victorino caught could have been ugly… give and take, I guess.
In my opinion, Russell Martin is the fourth best all-around catcher in baseball behind Brian McCann, Victor Martinez and Joe Mauer… he hits for average, has some pop (15-20 HR), steals bases and plays pretty good defense (when he’s not napping behind the plate). He’s young but I think that he’s going to be one of the better ones for a long time.

This year you can vote for the HR Derby for the first time, I believe… but it’s non-binding. They will simply ask the players who get the most votes to participate… so let’s make sure they ask MATT STAIRS!
Unfortunately, I lost the link to the HR Derby voting page and couldn’t get it on Google (wtf!)… If anyone finds it, please post it! (Also, the All-Star Game ballots given out at CBP during games on Fox TV included the HR Derby ballot) You can vote for up to 3 for each league.
