2 Quick Questions For Charlie Manuel

Posts, Raising Questions
Just two quick questions I’d hope our manager can answer.
1. Why is the bench so weak? Currently the bench includes Matt Stairs (who has been great), Greg Dobbs (who needs more at bats but is struggling), Eric Bruntlett (a far below-average offensive player and average-at-best defensive player), Chris Coste (standard fare for a backup catcher) and Paul Bako (really?). And what about that whole “We’ll give Big John the chance to prove himself” talk?
2. Why can’t Jimmy Rollins hit? Or, if I should be so accurate, why the heck did you move him back to the leadoff spot? That was stupid, wasn’t it? He was productive in the six-hole. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. No, but you fixed it, and suddenly Rollins is slumping again. What the heck is wrong with him? Whatever the case, move him back to the six-hole. Do it now.
If you remember, fair reader, I addressed Manuel with three questions a week ago. Now that the Lidge problem is bunk, I only have two questions. As you’ll see, they’re almost the same as the ones I asked before, but with small tweaks.
Yes, it’s like playing a broken record.
Actually, here’s a third: Why is Kyle Kendrick on the roster? But that’s not really a question for Manuel, is it?

I was shocked to see J-Roll up top. He was a good #6 hitter and he did fine there. We need his glove, but we don’t need him leading off.
Dobbs is a victim of circumstance. Pedro’s bat is hot and that reduces time for Dobbs, which cools his bat even more. As much as I like Dobbs, we may want to consider trading him to a team that NEEDS a full-time player so he can play daily. I would hate to see him go though. Just a thought. Stairs needs to stay here until he retires, he is happy in his role and it shows.
Bruntlett is valuable, but again, there may be a trade chip with him and Dobbs to a team that needs defense (such as the Nats or Fish – but that brings another issue of trading within the division). If that is the case, perhaps the Reds or Seattle as those are the teams with the most errors. Well, Mets are in there, but… Coste is fine; he does well when in the game.
Lastly, Kendrick needs to go back. Bring up someone – anyone. Even Chan Ho brought it back.

Tim. Did you get that “fair reader” bit from me? I think you did. Copycat. Firstly, ask Ruben Amaro why the bench is so weak. He makes the moves. Secondly, as far as Jimmy is concerned, the problem with swinging at everything is that when you’re not making contact, you kill the team. He won’t bunt. He won’t take a walk. As far as I’m concerned you can bat him 8th and use his speed for when the lineup turns over. Remember, the leadoff man is only the leadoff man once a game.

P.S. A.J. – Bruntlett stinks. Can’t get anything for him.

I posted this thought everywhere, so excuse me if I did it now twice here at PN. But Kyle Kendrick would look great in a Lancaster Barnstormers uniform!

Dipsy – Disagree; He has trade value in a PACKAGED deal. Not alone.

Right on! J-Roll was a natural down in the six hole. Moving him back to the top isn’t working. I like Shane up there, with Chase, Jason, Ryho and Rauuuuul in the 2-5 spots.

I don’t think Charlie has final say on the roster.
I agree J-Roll should hit lower in the lineup and stay there. Victorino is not a typical leadoff guy and he is clutch so it would be nice to have him hit 6. Rollins is a rally killer before the rally starts at lead off.
But…ain’t it great that we can complain about such trivial matters and we are up by 4 games mid-June?

Kyle Kendrick would look great in any other uniform, BUT the Phillies uniform. We should have won that game against the Red Sox last night. Kendrick blew it for us. Ibanez almost had it… and thank you Howard for the 9th inning homer! Lets kick some butt and I hope that Bastardo can continue to shine tonight.

A.J., you are clueless ! Bruntlett has no trade value whatsoever ! You couldn’t get a bag of balls for him. He can’t hit, he is an average defensive player at best, he has no baserunning fudamentals. How many times has he been picked off first or didn’t go from first to third on a base hit to right, because he never picked up the ball off the bat. He is horrible ! As far as Greg Dobbs goes, why would you trade him and deplete your weak bench even more? Dobbs can’t field well enough, or hit lefthanded pitching well enough to play everyday, so he is what he is…..a very good utility player, and an excellent pinchhitter against righthanded pitching. He is struggling a bit this year because he hasn’t been able to get the AB’s he needs to get into his groove due to the fact that Pedro is playing so well this year and is healthy. They need a big righthanded hitting outfielder to come off the bench. I thought they should have pushed hard for Moises Alou. He can roll out of bed and smoke line drives even at his age.

As much as the Phils want Mayberry to get swings we need to call him up until we get a right handed bat. Werth and Victorino need days off or they’ll berak down. Ibanez is rocking, but he’s 37 so a day or two off every now and then isn’t a terrible idea.
Escalona over KK in the pen is a no brainer, IMO.

Dobbs is not a full-time player anywhere, even for the Nats. He and Bruntlett have no trade value and why would you want to. As disappointing as Dobbs has been, with this probably being Stairs last year Dobbs will be the LH bat off the bench through next year. I would love to upgrade for Bruntlett but it’s not going to happen this year. Donald is now injured and wasn’t even playing that well. The problem is Charlie uses Bruntlett too much because of a lack of a righthand bat and 4th outfielder. Get one or bring back Mayberry. They may even prove better than Werth which wouldn’t be hard at this point. Put Rollins 6th, or 7th, or my preference 8th, and forget about it. Stop the yo-yoing and whining about whether he should lead-off or not. He shouldn’t.

I knew last nights game was over when Kendrick came in. I still am surprised that he was brought up.

Sit Werth down against right handers or give him a breather once in a while and let Dobbs play right field but do not trade Dobbs. Too valuable.

Welcome aboard the J-Roll down to #6 train. LOL. Several of us have been saying this for weeks. I really dont know the exact numbers, but the games I have seen or read about after the fact when he hits lower in the order, his Avg I believe is well above .300, possibly even .350 or .400, yet his hitting in the top spot is below his current average. I believe his Avg is around .222 because of how well he hits lower. Thats sad really. Werth. Hmm not much better really. What should Manuel do, bench them? LOL. HELL NO. The main problem is the have been horrible at bat, but their Defensive is TOP NOTCH. Sounds like a rock and hard place.

metsblow4show – You are an a$$, I was throwing it out for discussion. You are one of the reasons none of us can have a good conversation. Again, how do YOU know this? You must write for a major news outlet, huh?

Love how people are sooo down on Werth it seems. He struggles against righties, always has and always will. He also makes good defensive plays, and if anyone thinks Mayberry is better than him, obviously have never been to Leigh. Mayberry is what he is, and will not improve. People think Mayberry hitting everyday in AAA will help him turn out better. Please he’s 25. If he hasn’t
Also, Donald has had this lingering injury awhile and it has to have affected his play this year so he should get a pass this year so far. He’s much better than he his line shows.
I agree with you on Dobbs, but he’s just not getting enough ABs. Plus I still have faith in Dobbs. I think he’ll be fine. I can totally see bringing up DOnld next yr and replacing Bruntlett with him. Maybe even slowly moving DOnad over to 3rd next yr. I think it this rate, Feliz’s option will get picked up.
Tim- I don’t understand how you can challenge the idea of having Paul Bako on this team. I just can’t understand it. I mean some posters here loved this move, DOn M anyone? My god I thought he was going to rape me through the computer at the notion of bringing anyone else up other than Bako. I am just glad Bako has done SO much to prove he’s worth being on this team.

The Phillies need to seriously think about bringing Mike Cervenak up again. He is a great righty bat for the AAA IronPigs and would a great bat off the bench for the Phils. He is batting .333 and is a great utility player that charlie could fill in anywhere
