About Lidge, An Interesting Statistic

Analysis, Posts
So I realized three of the last four blown saves by Brad Lidge (vs. Dodgers, Yankees) came with Chris Coste at the plate. Got me to looking at his splits, and:
Lidge throwing to Carlos Ruiz: 16 G, 15 H, 10 R, 1 HR, .263 AVG, .760 OPS
Lidge throwing to Chris Coste: 11 G, 17 H, 14 R, 6 HR, .362 AVG, 1.253 OPS
We know how great Ruiz is at catching his pitchers, but those differences are staggering. Of course, the 2008 numbers run completely opposite, with Coste catching Lidge better (.190 AVG, .518 OPS). Take it as you may.

I think this is a coincidence to be honest. The difference between ’09 lidge and ’08 lidge that I have observed, he hasn’t been striking people out with the slider, for some reasong uys don’t seem to be swinging at it. Could that be because they aw him pitch too many times last year? and then on the world series, seeing him make eric hinske looklike a fool couldn’t have made it more obvious what he tries to do. I am worried about Lidge, there doesn’t seemt o be an easy answer to his situation, for example, coste or ruiz catching him, or an injury.

I think this is good, I think calling pitches may be part of the formula. I also think it is his confidence due to the knee. Brad is a good player and a star closer, it is high time he knows it and pitches like it.

OH concerning the slider – it only is effective when it is as fast as his fastball…
IN ADDITION – he did give up some runs last year – but luckily only in situations that were not save situations. So the question is this: Was he less than perfect last year and we set expectations too high OR is it Puljos over again?
Brad – I am your #1 supporter – get it in your mind you are the best in the business. Know it and pitch like it.

Yes he gave up runs last year, but what concerns me this year is not the blown saves, as devastating as they are to the Win column. It is the 7+ ERA. That is unbelievably bad. Like so bad that we have to expect him to give up a run every inning he pitches. Blown saves can happen in many ways (errors, coming into a game that was a 4 run lead but now the bases are loaded, fluke hits/bad calls), but an earned run is an earned run. Those can be placed primarily on the pitcher, and when your closer (who should almost never give up runs) is running out there with a 7+ ERA that is a huge problem.

Yes, Ruiz did take over for Coste Friday night. Doesn’t change the numbers, though.

Tim, I was hoping someone would break down those stats. I notice a look of panic/fear on Lidge’s face when Coste is calling the game. Right after he gave up that HR to Ethier on Sat, Fox showed a close-up of him and he mouthed “f*cking ——-”, couldn’t read the lips on the last part, but I don’t think he feels comfortable with Coste. Of course I’ve always been a HUGE Chooch fan, so the stats don’t surprise me that much.
EVERYONE SHOW THE LOVE FOR THE CHOOCH-VOTE RUIZ!!!!!

I really love these Mets fan. My best friend is one. He actaully is the most honest Mets fan. He keeps his mouth shut because they Dont win. They have not won a world series since 86. They blew two division titles down the stretch. Yes Krod is a wonderful closer but they have so many holes on that team. You never know if Wright will come up with a big hit. Beltran is a great player. Thats it. There is nothing else besides Santana. There infield is horrible. There two corner outfielders are aweful. They have no catcher. My buddy said he would take any Philly over and replace them with any player on the Mets, except Santana. Even Vic because he plays with heart.

Jeff G,
I think David Wright is a little better than horrible.

That’s because all the Phils play with their heart and not what’s in their bankroll. They don’t need to celebrate the singles, and doubles, they just celebrate the wins.

Maybe Lidge doesnt trust Coste to block his slider in the dirt as much as Chooch, so he doesnt bury it, hangs it, resulting in a few more bombs.

I brought this up after Saturday’s game. I don’t think Lidge has the full confidence in Coste blocking his slider in the dirt and what not. Also, as a closer, Lidge never shakes off the catcher, so that could be a problem also.
When Ruiz is catching him, he seems to throw a lot more sliders, and when Coste is catching it seems to be all Fastballs then the occasional slider when everyone in the Park knows it’s coming.

I never said Wright is horrible. Everyone else in that infield. Wright is a great defensive player. The only problem with him is clutch hitting. Can he get it done. I say NO. I would hate to be a Mets fan because they are boring. There players have no heart and they play for money. The have no team chemistry. If your not a Phillies fan fine but how could you not like this team. Ibanez, Utley, Howard…Just class.

Jeff G you are nothing but an idiot. what do you mean that they dont have heart? how do you know do you ever watch them? the reason why we are not kicking your ass this year because the whole team is hurt. I will name all the players who were hurt this past month and missed games Reyes Delgado Cora Sheffield Beltran Church Schinder Perez Putz. Now you really think that if they played all the games that they would’nt be winning the division.you can’t say that they are bad if key players are hurt!and you are only 3 games ahead. what if you had that many injuries? I would like to see how good you will do.

There is no doubt that Lidge is alot more comfortable burying that slider in the dirt when Chooch is back there

Tim says~ ..”the 2008 numbers run completely opposite, with Coste catching Lidge better (.190 AVG, .518 OPS). Take it as you may.”
I will and those 2009 stats (and in small sample) are meaningless. In the game Coste and Ruiz for the most part have fielded their position well and made the proper calls (with Dubee’s consent) with Lidge on the mound. The problem lies solely with Lidge. He has been inconsistent with his command of both slider and fastball. How he resolves the issue with his command remains to be seen.

A ‘team’ that has Delgado, Castillo, Sheffield – that is not a team. It’s a group of (once) talented individuals who in the case of Sheffield, still thinks the world owes him more money, honor and glory – who cannot rally around key players like Reyes or David Wright (still the only mutt I think would look great in red pinstripes).
P r i m a d o n a s – all of them. Whiners, not a team. And basically, that is why they will finish behind the Phils – a team!

If you were told before the series started that the Phillies were going to split the games against LA everyone would have been happy. The Phillies still have not lost a road series yet, which is awesome. The pitching seems to be coming around, and Bastardo looks like the real deal to me, he worked more pitches in this time out, and hopefully more next time, a little more confidence in throwing something other than fast ball when behind in the count would be nice.
And is it just me or has Chase looked more like Manny Trillo, when he gets a ground ball to him, he waits waits and then throws a bullet, Mind you I am not complaining, but it just appears to me that he does it more often than not, just an observation by the Shag man.

To all those who suggest Lidge may not have confidence in Coste’s ability to block a burried pitch in the dirt:
Correct me if I’m wrong but so far Coste hasn’t given Brad a reason to worry, at least when he’s catching him. If a ball gets by Coste and costs the Phillies the game, then that is all on Chris Coste. It’s no excuse that Lidge “doesn’t have confidence in him.” Brad just needs to worry about himself, throw his pitches and not worry about who is behind the plate.

Not true. Unfortunately the Phils have lost a series, and even more unfortunately it was against our beloved Mets. Albeit, it was only a 2-game set, but a series loss is a series loss. If we see the rejuvinated Jamie Moyer this week, I see the Phils taking 2 of 3.

the bottom line is, brad lidge is not getting the job done. the catch has NOTHING to do with it. chris coste does not take brad lidge’s velocity away. chris coste does not make brad lidge throw sliders in the dirt constantly. if people are dumb enough to believe this ridiculous claim that coste is the reason for lidge’s struggles, then they should be embarrassed. how many more excuses can we come up with for the reason lidge is stinking this year?

Yes, Ruiz came in Friday night – but Lidge would have got the save in that game had Feliz not booted the third out.
