Gameday 2009, Posts
Tim is on vacation this weekend, so Amanda’s doing the gameday post and Brian is making the beer selection.
Baltimore Orioles (30-37) at Philadelphia Phillies (36-29)
Brad Bergesen (4-2, 3.79 ERA) vs. J.A Happ (4-0, 3.53 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m at Citizens Bank Park
Weather: Rain, 66
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Bergesen is coming off his first complete game of his career. Against the Atlanta Braves, Bergesen allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks.
Happ will try to rebound from two straight bad outings against the New York Mets and Boston Red Sox. In his last two starts, he has an ERA of 7.36 and opponents are batting .302 against him in that stint. Happ will not only try to put his last two starts behind him, but also his struggles at home. Happ has a 5.24 ERA at Citizens Bank Park this season.
Three bench players will start for the Phillies tonight. Paul Bako will catch, Greg Dobbs will play first base for Ryan Howard (who reportedly suffered a 104-degree fever last night), and Matt Stairs will start in right.
Both pitchers are facing teams they have never faced before. The Phillies are going to have to be patient off Bergesen, and work the count against the 23 year old rookie.
Hop
efully the rain will hold off and the Phillies will return to their winning ways.
Your Gameday Beer: Tonight’s featured brew is Rogue Northwestern Ale, an India Red Ale from Oregon. With all the rain the Delaware Valley has been experiencing, it’s starting to feel like we live up there. This beer was recommended by one of our loyal readers, Chris, who considers it an A+ beer. Have it with some fresh fish or other local seafood.
Go Phillies!

Reyes is an average overall shortstop; outstanding glove, but hyped up because of the New York market.

Some of those arguments suck, but alot of your suck also. Actually we dont hate Reyes, I just think he is overrated. I think J-Roll looks like crap right now and shouldnt be going to the All Star game, but neither should Ramirez at SS, it should be Tejada. I rank Reyes right there with how J-Roll is currently playing honestly. Either way, what do you expect when you come onto a Phillies ONLY site with a screen name of phillyHATER. DUH. Enough with the I like to argue crap, all you are doing is hiding behind a screen name.

AJ has the point I was making. He is like J-Roll is now, (except J-Roll doesnt get injured as much). Very good gloves, mediocre batting.

I am such an idiot? Let’s look at batting… He beats J-Roll, but elite?
J-Roll – .274
Reyes .286
Drew – .270

The position of closer is not always smart. Why not just leave in the pitcher who had a very easy 8th inning (Chan Ho Park) to finish the game. Stay with the hot hand. There is no rule that requires a manager to change pitchers because it is the 9th inning. Charlie (and all managers) should not resist common sense. WHY remove an effective pitcher???? The closer and the “save” statistic should be abolished–they breed irrational decision-making in managers!

Better, but do us a favor, talk like a fair minded baseball person now that you went to a slightly classier name, and dont go back to the idiot comments that even got me involved. LOL

phillyhater – look you don’t think we know how it feels….Phil Jackson has won more NBA champhionships than the all of our teams combined. Gimmie a break… your just here cause you angry and it makes you feel better to unload. Why do you think sports talk radio stations do so well….You’ve unload, we’ve tolerated it, so now go.

I am off to bed after this
Reyes 551
J-Roll 885
If you limit J-Roll to 7/10 as in reyes’ years it is 619.5. Equal playing.
Good night, talk for real and you get a serious conversation back. We don’t have to like one another, but be civil here.

Ol’ Pete, you just said some wise words. There IS no rule! Holding leads in the past did not involve this regimented switching of pitchers. For some teams, it works wonders. So far, it hasn’t for the Phils. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. That’s why going with the hot hand – much of the time, at least – can prove to be a good plan going into the final inning

j reed – I am seriously going after this LOL – they do not think we know how it feels? Over 10,000 losses and 2 chanpionships and NOW we have a winning team that cannot win – I think we know how it feels. Enough of that, we will be OK, I think.

How fast can this team get on the road? I have never seen
anything quite like this home stand. The O’s road record is 9-20; they are in last place in Al East, yet Phils make them look pretty good! What a waste of a dramatic HR by Ryan Howard. I was totally wrong about Madson as a closer – he was using his change up on two strike counts then. What if Lidge comes back no different than when he went on the DL? All these questions must be answered on the road. Who is the leader of this team in the clubhouse and when is Chollie, the player’s manager gonna kick some ass before his ass has to be sacrificed? Last thing – I suggest that from now on starting tonight, there be absolutely no response to any comment from Met fans on this site.
Absolutely no comments whatsoever – if there is a comment, we will know it is coming from another disguised Met fan. Philly fans lets all agree to ignore these Bastardos
(sorry – mis-spelled). If ignored they will go away!
Happy Fathers Day to all Phillies everywhere (players, coaches & fans). Tomorrow let’s win one for the road!

Cholly’s style isn’t to scream, and it wouldn’t be mine in this situation either. That’s not going to do anything. I think they get the point after a loss like tonight’s.
When Ryan Howard came off the bench with cold sweats and hit that bomb, it made the recent woes disappear for a second and it seemed like everything was going to turn around. Ryan Madson absolutely shit his pants tonight when it mattered. He couldn’t locate his out pitches and he was throwing heat right smack down the middle. It was miserable.
Oh my god I went off with a legendary rant when that happened.

That was Zaun’s 2nd home run this season and his batting average currently is .226. Robert’s home run was his 7th; not exactly Babe Ruth even though he is hitting .288. Inexcusable for Madsen. Was throwing the heater right down the middle of the plate for the most part and had no movement on it. Two batters for the Orioles who are not home run hitters that were looking for the fast ball and got it and were fortunate enough to hit it out. Where was your change up, Madsen?

Hey everyone,
I would just like you say I am a mets fan, and I sometimes come on here to see how another team’s fans are feeling I wanted to apologize for the trolls that lurk on your site calling themselves mets fan. They are not people I want to claim as mets fans, its really unfair what they are doing to you, this is your blog, and your team and I want you to know that I am sorry for it.

I dont know why people even bring up the 10,000 loss thing anymore. We have been around a long long time. One day I figured it out. If the mets average the amount of losses they have for the first 40 years of their existance or whatever by the teim they have been around for us it will be about 11,000 so its worse than us.
And isnt there something we can do about these mets fan. it really drives me not to wnat to come on this site. its not about the phillies anymore. its about arguing with mets fans that dont really know what they are talking about. you say if he had caught the ball or if krod didnt blow the save….wel ok if madson hadnt blown those saves we wouldve won them too. you can say that about almost anything.

Summer, that was a fine comment. We don’t like the Mets, but I for one have lifelong friends who are Mets fans. I certainly respect the team and believe that not even the majority of the team’s aficionados are obnoxious. As long as neither they nor I gloat or whine, Mets fans are always eagerly welcome to talk baseball with me. That – not sarcasm, cynicism, gamesmanship or insults – is what baseball is all about.

Summer, I could not sleep well after the loss; and your comments are appreciated. We welcome you to the site because you bring insight. We all don’t have to like one another – but we can have a civil discussion. The bottom line is BOTH our clubs have issues. I cannot even say who the better or worse team is because it is comparing apples and oranges, truthfully. I know in the past I have probably not been as civil as I preach, but I am provoked easily sometimes (especially after a game like tonight). On the plus side, during the off season, I bought a bunch of World Series videos from A&E. They had ones like 2001, 1988, 1986, 1979 an 1975. I watched them all whether I wanted the teams to win or not. The 1986 Mets were a team I respect, so you all have some great history, as do we.
Thanks again for your comments.

AJ – Yeah, I love stats. and stats love patterns so when a team with this much firepower has a team wide batting slump it is an outlier and should raise an eyebrow if you see it twice in the same interval of different time frames. Easier said than done. A few year ago I went to a batting cage…it took several dollars and return trips before I could get a swing around before the ball in the fast pitch cage hit the backstop netting. It was more the sound of ball in net prompted me to swing. Perservence paid off, and I was finally able to hit consistently. A week later I went again and 5 dollars later I left with one a meager foul tip to my name…Baseball’s a headgame, but with that being said, if I were playing on a team, I probably try bunting or just make contact or draw a walk if I was have difficult at the plate. I like small ball, manufacturing runs is a way to stay ahead of the Law of Averages or at least keep it at bay when the long ball tatics fail. Sometimes, you have to give up for the pitcher, but when your slumping and not playing fundamentally sound ball aganist lesser arms neither pitcher nor bad bounces adquately explain losses. And that ‘s the problem with analyzing baseball, seperating the element of chance from a pitcher’s or batter’s skill. If a team plays fundementally good baseball, but still loses, tip your cap to their defense. Chances are the Law of Averages will reward you the next time and that ball lined right at the left fielder will be down the line for a base hit. Problem with the Phils is they don’t play this way to often or at least consistently thru the line-up. Cholly expects them to know better but they don’t always act on it . Sometimes, external enforcement is necessary…I bet Jason Varitek lets every batter in the Red Sox line-up know how that night’s ump will call the game. The Bo Sox and the Dodgers both display great plate disclipline. We typically don’t, we are a little more intuitive and perhaps this keeps us from second guessing or pressing which can be as equally detremental to hitting. Its a good approach considering the stress of 162 games but it during rough patches its our kryptonite which other teams see and exploit with a planned approach. Worse thing about this slump is it’s against teams we lost WSs to and that we are as champions not representing the NL, the only league, against the AL abomination. I’m sure we can right the ship and we have a history of finishing strong however we can’t depend on factors outside our control to abided by our team’s dynamic esp. with our pitching woes (i could write a book).

Stuart,
I have no problem bringing in the fans to discuss. It is the ones like Eli, Dan and Phillyhater (even though he/she chaged his/her tune) that drive me nuts. Let’s face it, these losses are driving both teams’ fans insane LOL

j reed – It took me some time, but that was insightful and you SHOULD write a book. I often wish we would play small ball more. J-Roll and Victorino would kill it if they played it and made things happen for the heart of the lineup. Mark Grace, one of my favorite on-Philly player, is all about putting pressure on the defense, putting the ball in play and making things happen. Things can go wrong, but when the pressure is on, things happen. If I were Howard, once in a while I’d drop a bunt down the third base line. Guess what – they’d re-think the shift – even if he beat it. I mean little stuff leads to bigger stuff. There is so much we could do with our speed and talent. I love home runs as much as the next guy, but everyone is so intent on smacking it out, when we could keep the defense on their toes. We may fail doing it, but I promise we’d keep them on their toes.

Maybe the Phillies should have played 9 innings instead of 1. They need to take their head out of their asses. This is getting embarassing.

AJ: Ashburn, Rose the game’s best contact hitters. I like the bunt. TMac asked him about it on the one the pre-show games and Cholly said he wouldn’t mind provided the stituation called for it. Its too bad about the 7th inning HR. Could have been history: 104 F Phever Phour-bagger. Has anyone watched the Pen on MLB network. I know these guys have dealt with the national media being champs and all but do you think that since its weekly national limelight, this, aside from being overused, might be putting additional pressure on some of the guys. I mean madson’s gonna have to dealt with this latest performance as well as have cameras in his face to record it for posterity.

Aj: the other thing about speed on the base paths…the pitcher might have to work out of the stretch which can decrease the monmentum the pitcher normally generate from his full wind-up.

j reed – agree 100% on the stretch/windup. Also – the pressure – that MAY be what is getting them at CBP. Madson needs to do what Castillo did and man up to the cameras and get it over with. Everyone has bad days, but they need to NOW put it behind them, and remember what got them there (see other board for Morris’ comments)
Morris – agree here.
