Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (37-32) at Tampa Bay Rays (38-35)
Antonio Bastardo (2-2, 5.21 ERA) vs. Andy Sonnanstine (5-7, 6.60 ERA)
Time: 7:08 p.m at Tropicana Field
Weather: Dome
TV: Comcast Sportsnet, MLB Network
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies will send Antonio Bastardo on the mound for the rubber-match against the Rays. Like the World Series, the Phillies took game one, and the Rays took game two. The only difference is that the series is still in Tampa, which may not be a bad thing with most of the Phillies success coming away from Citizens Bank Park.
In his outing against the Baltimore Orioles, Bastardo was roughed up in the second inning, but he settled down. He was effective throwing 73 of 108 pitches for strikes. The rookie pitched a career high seven innings in his effort against the Orioles.
In the World Series, Sonnanstine earned the loss in game four. In four innings, he allowed five runs, three earned, on six hits and three walks. Ryan Howard homered off him.
Sonnanstine’s numbers may not be impressive, but he has pitched better in his last two starts. He was effective against the Mets in last start, however a three run home run hurt him. It also notable that he is 12-9 with a 5.01 ERA at Tropicana Field.
Charlie Manuel has benched Jimmy Rollins for tonight’s and Friday’s game. Manuel says Rollins will return to the leadoff spot when he returns, however he’ll ride the pine for the next two days.
Tonights Lineup: Victorino (CF)/ Dobbs (1B)/ Utley (2B)/ Howard (DH)/ Werth (RF)/ Stairs (LF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Bruntlett (SS)/ Ruiz (C).

Your Gameday Beer:The Phils are still in Florida so we’ll go with another local beer. Landshark is brewed by Anheuser Busch and the new king of Florida, Jimmy Buffet. It seems to be a direct competitor to Corona – the beers look similar in appearance and are really only palatable when they’re ice cold and you’re burning in the sun. So if you’re lucky enough to be in that climate, have some spicy Thai food tonight. -By Brian
Go Phillies!

It really pains me that Bruntlett has to step in to take the place of a slumping Rollins and his batting average is almost 60 points lower than Rollins. Unbelievable. I guess the only other option is Donald and he’s on the DL. It’s just frustrating.

This team has no direction. First off I agree with benching Rollins. Bruntlett is just bad. Bring one of the kids up. Now you have Bruntlett, Feliz, Ruiz.. all outs at the bottom. Stairs is pathetic starting. Get Mayberry in there. This kid can hit. I hope Charlie loses his job..

cm I don’t think they like Mayberry playing against righties. I can’t really blame them considering that he hasn’t had the best swings off of them so far, but obviously they are going to have to let him get a few swings off of them. Sonnanstine isn’t that tough of a righty, though. Either way I like having him off the bench to pinch run or come in for defense.

Thank you, Charlie Manuel. Benching J-out was the best choice.

@ “I care to(o) much”….i assume you are gonna take over as manager? We don’t have anyone to bring up to play short with Donald hurt and Mayberry has crushed lefties but that’s it. He doesn’t exactly have a lot to work with right now.

Nice Stairs! It’s a good thing that Charlie didn’t lose his job “I care to much”. I guess he just got lucky since Stairs is “pathetic as a starter”.

By everyone’s Moyer logic from the other night Bastardo should be unhittable since he can attack the strike zone with the early runs on the board. Oh wait, he just walked Upton.

Whatever you say “Care to much”….you are just making yourself sound like an idiot by trashing the defending WFC manager….for no apparent reason. And as you can see earlier, I also echoed the frustration of only having Bruntlett as an option to fill in, but we really do have no other options unless you want to bring Cairo back up. And I don’t think everyone is real pumped about that.

I thought we got away with one there but it looks like Beard either made the tag or at least got him when he came off the base.

bastardo cannot get away with throwing fastball after fastball especially to this team!! but the only good thing is that usually he has only 1 bad inning and then most of the time gets under control after that, so hopefully this was his bad inning!

He looks unbelievably uncomfortable out there…I have no idea what he’s doing.
By the way, I just wanted to point out to Geoff and others who were trying to discredit Moyer’s work the other night because he had a big lead to work with that you can still give runs back right away, as Bastardo is showing us.

Since Bastardo has been called up, you can see he throws alot of pitches in one inning and he throws lots of balls. To be honest, in the future I think Bastardo will be a reliever. See Zobrist homers 4-0 Phillies lead is now 4-3. 2B Ben Zobrist having career year. 16HRS and 44RBI. Utley = 16HRS and 49RBI. Not comparing but just telling Zobrist having great year. We should honestly trade Bastardo in upcoming trade deadline. 4-3 Phillies after 1.

Maybe its not just Rollins, maybe our lead off hitters are instructed to swing on the 2nd pitch?

Nick we can’t overreact to bad starts by saying we need to trade him. I think he would be great to hang onto. Just remember that he is not supposed to major league ready yet so really this isn’t that surprising. We just had a need and he was pitching the best at the time.

Antonio Bastardo is not a major league pitcher. He has a 30% groundball rate (the ML average is around 40%) and he does not have control over his secondary pitches.
Keeping him in the rotation at this point is just giving away games.
