Philadelphia Phillies (38-34) at Toronto Blue Jays (41-35)
Jamie Moyer (5-6, 5.97 ERA) vs. Brian Tallet (5-4, 4.36 ERA)

The Phillies look to win their first series since the beginning of June when the took two out of three from the New York Mets. Hopefully they saved some runs from last night’s offensive outburst.
Jamie Moyer has been very inconsistent this year. In his last start against the Tampa Bay Rays, Moyer gave up only one run over six innings. Moyer pitched six innings against the Blue Jays last week. He allowed six earned runs on ten hits and two walks.
Tallet is coming off a six innings shutout against the Cincinnati Reds. Tallet has faced the Phillies as a reliever, but never as a starter.
Your Gameday Beer:We’re staying in the amber beer category, this time it’s Old Scratch Amber Lager. This malty thirst-quencher is produced by Flying Dog in Maryland, you know, the brewery with the cool labels by Ralph Steadman (of Fear and Loathing fame). This is another beer enjoyed ice-cold on a summer day, but unlike a cold Bud, this has serious – yet balanced – flavor. Pick up some at your local Costco or Sam’s in the variety pack and pair it with Cajun grilled chicken. – By Brian

Wheels: “Its really nice to get a one run lead in the first inning, especially on the road like this”
Really?
As opposed to at home where getting a lead is not a such a big deal.
Freakin moron.

The J-Roll situations getting ridiculous unless he’s injured. I’ve been a big supporter of Bruntlett being a valuable part of the team but his value as a utility guy has plummetd. He’s not playing the kind of D to make up for being an automatic out and right now he helps the team in no way while Jimmy sits. The thing thats got me scratching my head is the guy serves no value once he’s back on the bench. He’s not like a Craig Counsell or a Damien Easley, he’s not an top tier defensive guy who’s a bench guy because he can’t hit and he certainly isn’t a guy you try and find ABs for… Head scratching…

I mean, Jamie has to pitch better, no doubt. I don’t know how long Charlie can keep running him out there. He’s having a god awful season. I think one thing Charlie could do is when Moyer is pitching, bring an extra pitcher up from Reading of Lehigh or wherever to possibly absorb innings if Moyer has to go out in the fourth. I’m completely NOT kidding. Bako goes down, pitcher comes up. It would have to be a pitcher where options are not a problem. You just lose a hitter off the bench. Bruntlett is useless, no doubt. I think Ruben will address that this month.

I’m sorry Moyer supporters but he has got to go! Yes he got a win in his last start but that was with a 10 spot! He doesn’t have it and staying o0n the team is selfish! He should just retire instead of hurt them

I know Charlie likes 3 catchers on the roster but Bako’s just eating up a roster spot with a tired pen and flat-footed bench.

I know everyone says leave Moyer alone. He is a piece of TRASH. A player thats a compiler over the years. He does not belong in baseball anymore. We have no chance to win if our pitchers keep getting crushed. Moyers is garbage. You piece of trash.

and the choir of hate begins… The guy could win back to back starts for an entire month and he’d still be hated on this board.

This last inning was huge I think. For a moment the Phillies looked the team that could not score and kept allowing runs that have lost all these games for the last couple of weeks. We both took a lead and kept it. Things might actually be looking up after all. If we win this game I am officially optimistic.

OK I was supporting Mayberry but 5 strikeouts and a DP in the last 2 days! He has to do better and adjust like the pitchers are adjusting to him!

NJ – cmon man. I hope Moyer turns it around but he doesn’t have much time left. I wish he weren’t so bad but he is. For some reasons the umps aren’t giving him the edges – this is a common refrain – but that really hurts him. And you know what happens to a guy when his two pitches are change up and slower change up when he has to pitch more in the middle of the plate….

Dipsy take the point but we could be doing much worse than Moyer, there’s more to this game than stuff. He’s not going to be an ace but he’s going to give a number of good starts over the course of the year. Has he really been that bad when Cole has pitched something like 2 more innings than him on the year? Most here like to hate when he’s not doing great, scream when he’s bad and bang their hands on their chests when he gives good starts as if it means nothing.
I’m in the Moyer camp until he bottoms out in every category, isn’t the case right now.

Come on man…if he did that for a month straight hed get some leeway. Ive given him plenty of leeway after his good string in late May early June. The bottom line is you cant ignore his mediocrity. Today is a mediocre performance at best. If he can do 7 innings with 4 runs, thats a bit better. But 6 innings and 4 runs is not good. You cant factor the offense into that, you have to ask what is Moyer doing? how is HE performing? Run totals go down for all teams in the postseason you know that. The bottom line is all of these 6 inning 4 run performances are NOT good, they are MEDIOCRE. THis is a mediocre performance so far today.

Geoff most pitchers in this league are mediocre or good and had mostly mediocre starts. Look at Matt Cain’s gamelogs and you’ll see just as many mediocre as good starts. Jamie is usually good enough to beat the other guy, that’s all you can ask for once you get past the front of your rotation… Get over it

NJ – Cole missed starts due to injury which I think is the reason his IPs are down. How much closer to the bottom does Jamie need to get? If he keeps pitching as is do you keep him in the rotation after the all star break? It looks like Cole, Blanton, Happ, Moyer, and uh, uh, uh, who knows for awhile. Meanwhile, don’t look now, but Jamie might be on his way to earning a “workable” start (I miss Tim).
