Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (39-34) at Atlanta Braves (35-40)
Joe Blanton (4-4, 5.06 ERA) vs. Derek Lowe (7-6, 4.53 ERA)
Time: 7:00 p.m at Turner Field
Weather: Sunny, 90
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies are happy interleague play is over after posting a 6-12 record against the American League. They head to Turner Field, where they were a perfect 9-0 last season. They’ll have to extend their win streak against Derek Lowe, who shutout the Phillies in eight innings back in April.
Joe Blanton was roughed up by the Braves earlier this year. In 12 innings, his ERA is 9.75 and Braves hitters are batting .321 against him this season.
Jimmy Rollins is back in the starting lineup, and out of all the Phillies hitters, Rollins has the most success against Lowe. He is batting .304 against Lowe in his career. On the other hand, Brian McCann is 6-for-7 with 2 home runs and six RBI against Blanton.
With Rollins back in the lead-off spot, the rest of the lineup looks like this: Rollins (SS)/ Victorino (CF)/ Utley (2B)/ Howard (1B)/ Werth (RF)/ Dobbs (LF)/ Feliz (3B)/ Ruiz (C)/ Blanton (P).
Your Gameday Beer- Today’s beer is Red Rocket Ale. Careful, this Amber/Red Ale is on fire. Its deep cinnamon color makes for a beautiful pour so be sure to release it from the bottle. Its hoppy, caramel malt flavor comes from a complex recipe of five different grains. If you can, roast a chicken with all the fix-ins. -By Brian
Go Phillies!

If movies and TV have taught us anything, Rollins comes up with the big hit this inning.

Nate – A costly Santana error; bases were loaded, Braun hit it hard and Santana threw it into left field on his slide to third… Bases clearing triple and error 4-run hit.

Well, after having an absolutely miserable day, I’d hoped to settle in for a great game and a brand new, refreshed Jimmy. Oh well….

Is it just me or does it seem like the Phillies don’t care? Like last year, no matter what we, or atleast I always felt the Phillies were never out of it. This year, no matter what I feel like the Phillies are never in it, or I am just waiting for the other shoe to drop. It seems like they have no fire. That lazy pick off attempt by Madson and Howard is a prime example of what I am talking about.

Ed – they care, they are just all struggling and trying TOO hard. This man here (Jimmy) is the key.

mikeB-there are no lights along the back of the Turner Stadium Acording to Wheels, many visiting outfielders have complained about how its darker than usual all the warning track.

Regardless of the outcome, this is Jimmy’s best at bat in some time

Since Johan Santana made the error, does that mean he has to get a mirror so that he can give himself the stink eye when he comes off the field?

That still was the best at bat, as ugly as strike 3 was. He fought off close pitches and took a few. I can live with that one. Swinging on first pitch – no

I say trade Rollins while you still can get a decent player or too foe him. He is stinking up the lineup

David Murphy tweeted this: With Rollins at the plate, Braves fans chanting “2-0-8!, 2-0-8!” in reference to his average, which has dropped with an 0/4 night

You are right MP, I am sure they care, it just doesn’t seem like it. I think people underestimate what Burrell brought to the team from a club house stand point. Now I am not saying that they should have resigned Burrell isntead of Ibanez but what Burrell did in the club house was pretty important. He was not a very vocal guy but when he did speak up the team listened and he was known to do it from time to time. I almost feel like the Phillies don’t have any leaders, or at least not guys who have a right to say anything. Take J-Roll and Moyer, two supposed leaders in the club house are both having miserable seasons. Clearly J-Roll really can’t call anyone out or say anything when he is hitting a ridiculous 212 or whatever it is. Anyone else see this or am I just nuts?

you are correct M.P we agree 99% of the time, however if Rollins did his job just once today we would still be winning. I am done with J-Roll honestly. Completely done with a leadoff hitter who has a BA of .207.

If movies and Tv have taught us anything, Jimmy makes a big play in the field and then comes up with a big hit in the 11th.

Brian and Ed,
I am NOT a Jimmy fan, I like Lidge. I would not normally defend Jimmy except I cannot go along with him being the drag. I am peeved about the way the whole team is playing right now. I am not ready to blame Jimmy alone yet. That is not to say I won’t – just not yet. When everyone else improves and he drags them down, I will agree. Look, we should be about 10 games up. Regardless if MY guy blew 6 saves, which we lost 4, we still should have about 6 more games than that.

No way in hell should a leadoff hitter have that kind of average. Trade him or send him down he is washed up.

Thats fine Keith. Paul Molitor is still my favorite player and at 50 i bet he could still hit better than .207

Don’t get me wrong, this is clearly not just a Jimmy issue, or a Lidge issue though they are two of the bigger disappointments this year. And don’t get me wrong, I didn’t expect Lidge to be perfect again, or close to it. I figured a blown save here or there, ERA in the 3-4 range, maybe 6 blown saves all year. But it’s not just him. The time has been mis managed a ton, they don’t run anymore, their bench wouldn’t be good enough to start for the Threshers, their rotation hasn’t put together more than two turns in the rotation of solid pitching, their pen is depleted with injuries, all that and they are still 2.5 up. I think we have gotten mighty lucky but luck runs out eventually. We need to fix or patch our problems now while the rest of the division is playing like garbage and pray we turn it on sooner rather than later.
