sawxlogo Boston Red Sox (38-24) at Philadelphia Phillies (35-25)
Josh Beckett (7-2, 3.77 ERA) vs. JA Happ (4-0, 2.98 ERA)
Time: 1:35 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Mostly sunny, 76

Long games and rain have disabled half the Phillies bullpen. Brad Lidge and Scott Eyre are injured. Clay Condrey and Chan Ho Park are ailing. Chad Durbin and Jack Taschner might be unavailable. JC Romero, too. Basically, the Phillies will need JA Happ to pitch the game of his life today against the Red Sox.

Happ might be capable, throwing good baseball most of the season. He has thrown well over 100 pitches in his previous starts, and barring anything unforeseen, he’ll be asked to do it again.

The Sox have their ace, Josh Beckett, on the mound. He’s had a good season, and will try to silence a Phillies offense that hasn’t been great lately, although they did score six runs last night.

Go Phillies!

I guess we’re about to get swept. Maybe that will give us some humility.

I see the positive vibe is already in the air.

Phillies are the only team with a winning record that has a losing record at home.

Terrible home record, vs a pitcher pitching the best in baseball right now, without their MVP caliber hitter in the lineup. If this game was set for odds it’d probably be 20-1 against us. I’ll watch, but I have 0 confidence in them winning this one. This one is too heavily stacked in the Sox favor.

The gambling line is only -124 for the Red Sox. So a $10 bet on the Sox wins you $8.06. (The line doesn’t reflect Ibanez not being in the lineup).

Don’t look up “Sarnac” at urbandictionary.com

I thought it sounded like some creature out of a fantasy movie, but that’s not what showed up there.

Of course I had to look it up, and now I’ve learned three new words/maladies, hopefully none of which I ever contract.

Ok guys, we got a game with the Red Sox today. And that only means one thing! Bad news for the Red Sox.

Is Raul out of the line-up today? If so, why?

Who is conceding anything today? Baseball is unpredictable. Look at who has been key for the BoSox the last two days?? Julio Lugo. Considered worthless (or werthless LOL) by Red Sox nation. Lets see what happens with the WFC today.

To Morris Buttermaker~ I think I understand the manager’s decision if he decides to rest Ibanez. I’ll repost my thought from the other thread.

“I noticed Ibanez’s grimaces in the field and at bat plus getting hit by a pitch from one of Bosox’s young fireballers (Bard) the other night had to take a lot out of him.

the 37 yr old Ibanez’s body is taking its’ toll. Last season he had played every game ( all 162 games). I can understand the manager’s concern and sees an opportunity to rest Ibanez today plus off day tomorrow. He has done that with Utley earlier this season despite the player’s objection.

Add in the factor that Beckett had equal success this season against both righthanded and lefthanded hitters (both hitting .231 against him).
As a matter of fact, in checking Beckett’s career stats, righthanded hitters have hit .237 and the lefties hitting .244.

If indeed Ibanez is out of the lineup today, the hitters will have to step up for him.”

Apparently Howard can field better but still has no idea how to throw the ball to someone’s glove.

Is it just me, or wouldn’t you rather see Chooch calling the game with younger pitchers and let Coste catch Moyer and only Moyer?

I did not see the play, but Jimmy has dogged a few plays recently. On Thursday night, he had a blop hit to left, and he probably should have gotten a double but only made it to first.

WOW…Werth bailed on that like it was going to hit him and it landed nicely in the strike zone…this is going to be an ugly at bat.

ed r.- yeah I saw him interviewed and he said he’ll let pitchers shake off off pitches…moyer and heady pitchers, that’s fine but…rookies, and relievers no way…catchers call the game

Way to go Werth…way to make me look bad. I’m ok with it though.

Isn’t Santana throwing for the Mutts today? If so that is sweet that they are getting to him….

Nice knock Werth! He was a positive last night amongst a bunch of negatives so hopefully he can keep it going.

That is the first run Beckett has given up in 14 and a 1/3 innings…he has given up a total of 2 runs (including the one that just scored) in his last 29 and 1/3 innings.

Yes it is Santana vs Burnett.

    we really need a #2 starter . . .

Wow…earlier this week we thought our rotation was in good shape…amazing what three games vs a solid team from the AL will do to you.

Well at least we don’t have to play these guys again….Happ is just gonna have to dig deep and find a way to get some guys out because we are not gonna pull him today….we have no one to throw behind him.

well Blanton pitched well, just not the 2 new guys

    and a 3 and a 4 and possibly a 5th starter.

You’re right, Blanton did pitch a great game we just didn’t score any runs.

But Ed we just played a solid game against a team from the AL the other weekend at Yankee Stadium and that went fine. Happ pitched fine in that game as well. So you can’t blame it all on the competition…we are just having a bad weekend.

so has anyone figured out why we have 3 catchers…and yet a another game when our ace doesn’t face their ace….it should have been Blanton, Happ, Hamels…

maybe we just can’t play well at home this year lol

I think it’s obvious that the Phils need a big-time pitcher. Happ was pitching over his head, Bastardo has only one pitch and is in way over his head and Blanton and Moyer are back of the rotation guys.

It certainly is obvious Griffin, especially when these young guys pitch well. Although last week it seemed like everyone was fine with no trade. It is a “what have you done for me lately” scenario. The Phils are going to have to hold on another two weeks at least with these guys before making a deal or two. Fortunately they won’t be facing the Sox anymore.

Btw besides the rain and the pounding we took last night, there were so many Red Sox fans at the stadium I could barely enjoy being there. I am never selling Sox tickets away ever again because I don’t want to contribute to that crap….it was unbelievably embarrassing.

I meant when these young guys *don’t* pitch well

    These umpires suck so bad…

Wonder who is coming out of the bullpen today? Maybe Park for 3 innings? Happ is up to 51 pitches and the second isn’t even over.

    Man this sucks

Ed it will probably be that Tyler Walker guy that we just called up. This game is gonna turn into yesterday realllll fast.

Maybe but I am not sure if Walker is a multi inning guy.

Well, for the first time this season, I think, I’m not going to watch anymore of this crap, I’ll take the radio outside though, Scott and L.A. are sure to be entertaining today!
