Gameday 2009, Posts
Toronto Blue Jays (35-31) at Philadelphia Phillies (36-26)
Scott Richmond (4-3, 3.90 ERA) vs. Jamie Moyer (4-5, 6.11 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Rain, 64
TV: Comcast SportsNet, ESPN
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Probably should’ve been a win last night, but you know …
It’s okay, because tonight Jamie Moyer will take on a bunch of guys he hasn’t faced much. Oh wait, he has. The following batting averages against Jamie Moyer since 2004: Marco Scutaro (.379), Lyle Overbay (.462), Aaron Hill (.375), Vernon Wells (.350), Alex Rios (.474), John McDonald (.444), Scott Rolen (.333).
Meanwhile the Phillies have never seen Toronto starter Scott Richmond. There are literally two kinds of results you see when the Phils face a new pitcher: Either he completely dominates them or they thrash him up and down. Richmond is a fastball-slider pitcher who gets killed by lefties (1.055 OPS), so if the meat of the order can do work tonight, it should be an easy victory. Of course, Raul Ibanez is hitting just .220 in his last nine games, and Ryan Howard is hitting .216 with 17 strikeouts in his last 11. Both span back to the series in San Diego.
Clay Condrey’s back still ails, so consider him unavailable tonight. The same might be said for Tyler Walker, who allowed a two-run double in the 10th last night.
Your gamenight beer: Budweiser Budvar. Wait, a good Budweiser? This one is a Czech pilsner, so good luck finding it. But hey, it’s a cool summer lager you can enjoy with any summer fare. I’d go with pizza tonight.
Go Phillies!

GREAT JOB JIMMY, 3-1 COUNT AND YOU SWING AT BALL AT YOUR HEAD. Move him down old man. maybe we should just keep playing ping pong with our minor league teams. Bring Kendrick up again or hey maybe someone else. This team has no clue what they want. stop grasping and come up with a plan.

Jimmy really made the most of that 3-0 count. His pop-ups are looking better. Getting them a little bit deeper.

At what point are we allowed to admit that Milt Thompson is a horrible hitting coach? Let me know when it is ok. Because I will admit it.

So I was getting tired of all the “get rid of moyer now!” talk…have we all taken a step back from the ledge? Our #5 pitcher now has 6 innings and 4 ER…exactly what you expect from him.

Isn’t Moyer our 3rd starter? Or are we just claiming to have 3 #5′s?

Id say we have a 1, 3, two 4′s, and a 5. If we still had brett, then it would be evened out

Just thinking that Blanton is our 2, Moyer is our 4, and then Happ and Bastardo are 4 and 5 made me realize how much the Phillies do need to trade for a starter.

I hope I’m not perceived as one who just bitches and moans but I just don’t get how Milt and Charlie as a former hitting coach can let so many nights of bad fundamentals just slide. What happens in each at bat is one thing but night after night poor plate discipline is being ignored. There’s so much good and boy would it be something special if some of those bats started using a little more baseball smarts.

Milt Thompson is a career .274 hitter. A hitting coach should at least be a carreer .300 hitter, or at least .290.

Your right Adam about Moyer. BUT GUESS WHAT. Giving three runs up in the first makes some hitters put there heads down. The other pitcher also take a little pressure off.

I’m with you CM, it seems like everytime the Phillies come in for a homestand the rains follow and stick around until the Phils hit the road.
I was at all three Sox games over the weekend and it was a tough weekend Phillies and weather wise.

I been trying to watch this game while at work, and for all you Moyer haters, the phillies need to score more than on run on this AAA pitcher to take a little pressure of Moyer sht just saw he gave up a 2 run dinger in the 7th, anyway if this game was 5-4 going into this inning he would not even be out there. 6 innings four runs is not great barly good if you are some people on this site. But the guy is going to give you 3 out of 5 good starts.
and back to he has won in 6 starts guy earlier, wins is the worst stat for a pitcher, you lose a game 3-2 and it was a bad game. The guy is your 4 -5 pitcher, he gives up 3 or 4 runs even 5 with what this offense is suppose to do that is keeping you in most games. This game was lost by terrible at bats by Ryan, Chase, and yes even Raul. These guys should be smoking this guy.
Not that it is over we can score 6 -7 runs in an inning so I still believe but you Moyer haters really need to get a grip.

I’m really feeling for Moyer, the guy hasnt been given anything to work with all year. Sure he’s not lights out but a potential Cy Young winners going to look just as bad in the situations he’s finding himself in.

Apparently Jeff likes to whine.
I guess he hasn’t seen the stat about american league teams OWNING the NL, so i guess its an abberation that the Phillies continue to struggle against AL teams. (I mean, except that WS, didn’t they take 4 of 5? Oh yeah, right, they did, and they won a big Trophy, called the World Series Championship)
Front running fans like Jeff are a disgrace :] YATE

And some of you wonder why JRoll called you band wagon fans, maybe really not the right word. But some of you on here are really crazy after every 2 or 3 bad games. You need a little more faith, and stop being so negitive. I am not saying everything is rosy in philyland, this is Moyer’s first bad start in his last 4 starts, and even if he did not get those wins, he keep them in the games
