Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (30-20) at San Diego Padres (25-27)
JA Happ (3-0, 3.00 ERA) vs.Chris Young (4-3, 4.45 ERA)
Time: 10:05 p.m. at PETCO Park, San Diego, Calif.
Weather: Mostly sunny, 65
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
The Phillies are gunning for the three-game sweep at PETCO, a rarity since the Padres haven’t been swept at home yet. But for this team? With an 18-6 road record? Anything is possible.
The big story tonight is the return of JC Romero, the left-handed reliever who was suspended for 50 games for violating Major League Baseball’s substance abuse policy. He should slide quickly back into his setup role, taking on left-handed hitters during the Ryan Madson portion of the game. His addition should help refresh the ‘pen while giving some corrected order to the middle relief portion. Hearty handshakes go to Clay Condrey and Scott Eyre, especially, for stepping up in Romero’s absence.
JA Happ is the man on the mound first and can build on his last start, which was effective but left some a bit empty. There is hope: On April 19, Happ went three innings against San Diego, giving up three hits and a walk. Kevin Kouzmanoff has the most success off him, 4-for-4 lifetime against Happ.
The Phillies will face Chris Young, who they lit up back on April 17. That night the Phils pounded him for seven runs on nine hits, including a three-run home run by Chase Utley. He’s hitting .364 against Young.
Your gamenight beer: JC Romero: The most important man in the world. He may not drink beer often but when he does … he goes with Dos Equis. Yes, this is for Mr. Romero, whose acquisition single-handedly changed the Phillies bullpen back in 2007, and forever since. Drink up. And stay thirsty, my friends.
Go Phillies!

Welcome back, JC. Our bullpen just got a whole lot better…
So did the Braves’ offense. Acquired Nate McLouth from the Pirates. 2007 hero Tom Glavine is now available.

Some good news before the game tonight, Kyle Drabek’s first start in AA went 7 innings only giving up 3 hits, striking out 4 and no runs given up along with a bunch of weak ground balls that were hit off him

Good first start for Drabek in Reading. He could be on a fast track to be auditioning for a rotation spot in Spring Training.

Drabek: 7IP, 3H, 0R, 0ER, 3BB, 4K – Extends his scoreless streak to 16 innings

Phillies Lineup Tonight:
1. Rollins SS
2. Victorino CF
3. Utley 2B
4. Howard 1B
5. Ibanez LF
6. Dobbs RF
7. Feliz 3B
8. Coste C
9. Happ P
Dobbs gets his second straight start this time at RF. Jayson Werth doesn’t start and it maybe a good thing because he has been struggling lately and a day off just might be the cure because he is not injured he’s just swinging at bad pitches. Ruiz also has the night off as Coste starts.

Im projecting hell replace Blanton when Blanton walks, but if he keeps this up he will be on the roster to start next season and will probably be a Super Two player.

Padres Lineup tonight:
1. Gwynn CF
2. Eckstein 2B
3. Gonzalez, A 1B
4. Kouzmanoff 3B
5. Giles RF
6. Hundley C
7. Venable LF
8. Burke, C, SS
9. Young P
Henry Blanco gets the night off at Catcher. Josh Wilson also not starting at SS. So both teams don’t have their A+ lineup out there.

Why Dobbs, not Feliz, behind Ibanez? Do we seriously want 4 lefties in a row? Plus, Pedro is hitting the ball well and is better protection for Ibanez….

Chris Young would be like Adam Eaton here. Too many meatball flyballs…hed be a disaster.
If Drabek really is that nasty then he will be a super 2 because lie hamels they wont be able to delay him too long.

To be honest I think the Phillies are going to try hard to get a top-shelf pitcher but won’t get it. Instead they’ll get a solid Number 2 or 3 Pitcher like a Javier Vazquez or a Jarrod Washburn.

Who goes to the pen for that guy? Moyer? What if Bastardo is still pitching well…and I DO see where they get the Santana comparisons from. Hes rough around the edges but I can sorta see that…

This is my prediction for the starting rotation in lets say 4 or 5 year in NO particular order:
Cole Hamels
Kyle Drabek
Joe Savery
Antonio Bastardo
Michael Worley or a top-shelf starter
Lou Marson, J.A Happ, Carlos Carrasco will be not on the team in 4 or 5 years. They will be traded for a top notch starter(s) who will be in the rotation. Hey in about 2 or 3 years trade some top notch prospects for Felix Hernandez who is an amazing starter but just doesn’t get enough run support. Or get Tim Lincecum who also doesn’t get much support but is a great pitcher. Last year rumor was Alex Rios for Lincecum and we have some top notch prospects which would be a better deal.

Yesterday on Fox Sports/MLB.com I read an article by Dayn Perry that he believe the Phillies couldn’t win the division title if they were in any other different division. To be honest I think we could win in the AL Central, AL West and NL Central. NL West with Dodgers and AL East would be tough but we would be still be able to compete in them.

Tim,
I predicted here back in spring trainng that Drabek would be competing for a rotation spot next year. I was land blasted by many for that prediction. I wouldn’t be surprised with a Sept call up start!

Bogus argument by Perry. If the Phillies were in any other division, their schedule would take on a completely different complexion. If they were in either West division, they’d be making a lot more west coast trips. If they were in the NL Central, they’d be up against 6, not 4, teams. You can’t really transplant a team into another division and compare with much validity.

Would I would really love to see is the young guys pitch well until at least July 10 or so. This would alleviate the need for a stop gap 3/4 starter like Marquis. But eventually we will need to get the big tamale, the diggity, the real thing. AKA a damn good starter. Can’t go into the post sesaon with Hamels, Blanton, and uhhhh, whover would br their third starter. Odds on Phils aquistions:
Jake Peavy 25:1
Roy Oswalt 15:1
Jon Garland 11:1
Jason Marquis 10:1
Aaron Cook 9:1
Erik Bedard 7:1

Speaking of J.A Happ, I remember Chan Ho Park. He was just amazing in SPT with a 25:1 K:BB ratio but he hasn’t done much. 1-1 with a 7.32Era and batting .100 with a homer and 1 rbi. He turned a 10-1 lead yesterday into a save situation for Ryan Madson who closed out the 10-5 win. Either Park needs to start getting his stuff right or we need to trade him or send him to the minors for a while.

Travis: I don’t think you could get a warm six pack of Schlitz for Park. We’d just release him.
Little Guy : Ray Emery blows and its not hockey season and we’re not hockey fans anyway.

Dipsy seems like hes one of those stuck up suburban kids who need to get his ass beat so he stops running his mouth.
I’m sorry I forgot you speak for everyone on the board.
I also don’t think im the only person on here who is sick and tired of you acting like you run the website with your low blows against people posting on here.
I also love to check in every day and see your odds for who the Phillies will obtain via trade! I love it! Yeah!

Top of 1st: Jimmy Rollins strikes out swinging. Shane Victorino up next and he hits his 14th double of the year. Now Chase Utley up facing Chris Young who Utley is hitting .364 against and had a 3run homer earlier in the season off Young. Victorino 9/12 in SB’s this year. Utley on a 2-1 pitch pops out to the SS. Ryan Howard up next. Man on second and 2 outs for Ryan. Young is a RHP and Happ is a LHP. RYAN HOWARD DELIVERS! HIS 16TH HOMER OF THE YEAR TO CENTER. A TWO RUN BOMB GIVES HIM 16 HOMERS AND 45 RBIS ON THE YEAR! ALRIGHT HOWARD! Rauuuuul Ibanez up next. Full count on Raul again. Ibanez got ahead 3-0 but ends up flying out to left. Phillies get a double from vic and a 2run bomb from Howard and lead 2-0 after a half inning.

This is why I never bought into the argument that the Phils only win and get all the homeruns cause they play in CBP. They can hit them anywhere. Rollins said the other day that unless they’re playing in the Grand Canyon, no park can hold Howard.
