Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (32-22) at Los Angeles Dodgers (39-19)
Antonio Bastardo (1-0, 1.50 ERA) vs. Randy Wolf (3-1, 3.21 ERA)
Time: 8 p.m. at Dodger Stadium, Chavez Ravine, Calif.
Weather: Sunny, 66
TV: ESPN
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Antonio Bastardo seeks his second win in as many starts. His mission: Do it against baseball’s best team on baseball’s biggest regular season stage.
Bastardo pitched well in his major league debut, a six-inning, five-strikeout win over the Padres. He’ll have to face a formidable Dodger attack that’s hitting .297 (.815 OPS) against left-handed pitching. Luckily the Phils lefties have had nice outings against Los Angeles so far in the four-game series.
And of course, the Phils should have been looking for a sweep today, but que sera sera.
The Phils will look for a split against former-Phil Randy Wolf. Of those on the 25-man roster, Jimmy Rollins, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer, Ryan Madson and Clay Condrey remain as a teammate of Wolfie’s. He’s been throwing well this season, striking out 58 while walking 22 in his 75.2 innings.
Knowing the nature of this series so far, this should be a tight one. So one more question for our fair manager: Is Brad Lidge available tonight?
Your gamenight beer: Tonight I’m celebrating the last two horrible endings by getting behind a skunk: Heineken Premium Lager. It was my gateway beer — a friend of mine in college would order a sixer of Heineken every Thursday night for our college paper Thursday beer fetes. It was the first beer I regularly drank, and that opened me to everything else. Gotta start somewhere, even if it’s a skunk. Hopefully the Phils won’t stink it up tonight. Just in case, eat a non-skunky beef and potatoes.
Go Phillies!

J-Roll in the 6 hole…Charlie has listened. This is a big game for Rollins.
And, I would imagine no Lidge tonight. That might be a mistake. Give him a rest for a few days.

Around the NL East Today:
Mets 7 at Nationals 0
Brewers 7 at Braves 8
Giants 0 at Marlins 0 Delay Top 1st
Also: Roy Halladay pitched a complete game shutout vs KC. Halladay now 10-1 with 2.40+ era. Would love to see Doc in Red Pinstripes.

Doc in pinstripes would be outstanding. I would probably shed a tear if that happened.

do we know what the line up is tonight, someone said JRoll in the 6th spot, does that mean Vic lead off, and is Werth hitting second again. I know Vic is hurting a little, but 0-4 in the lead off, is that much better than JRoll. I know I am in the Minority on this one, but I think long term JRoll has to be the lead off guy. He had a few good at bats after he batted 6th last month, so here is hoping it gets him going again. Phils need a split here now, after the last two rough games. I think it will happen, Bastardo 6 innings 4 hits 1 ER. If he can keep the walks to a minimum I think he will be OK.
GO PHILLIES

I wanna see Bastardo use that change up. I’m no manager but I’ll bet the Dodger game plan is: Don’t swing at the slider.

It’s the Phillies offense and their “skunky” effort with men on base (left a total of 38 runners on base in last two losses) that concerns me more than anything else. With their longball mentality, smallball is so foreign to them.
That’s my one and only rant for tonight. ;-)
Let’s go Phillies!

Matt Stairs is not here. He is attending his daughter’s high school graduation, so the Phils have a bench consisting of Bruntlett, Dobbs and Coste.
Victorino CF
Utley 2B
Werth RF
Howard 1B
Ibanez LF
Rollins SS
Feliz 3B
Ruiz C
Bastardo P.

Krod acts like a retard whenever he gets the final out. He celebrates like he won the world series. Dodgers have also acted like they won the world series with a walkoff the past 2 win. Shut em out Bastardo. 1 hour and 6 minutes till first pitch by Randy Wolf against Shane Victorino.
Go Phillies!!!!

If the Phillies lose tonight and get swept in NY, they will actually finish this raod trip out of first, after having a 4 game lead.
Those last 2 in LA hurt bad and are the types of games that come back to bite you in a close race

You dumb Mets fan. You make sense. Your team consists of a bunch of losers. They blow and consistently choke every year. Brad Lidge won the Phillies the World Series last year. He did not blow 1 save all year. Lidge is a winner. Mets fans are the stupidest, most uneducated fans in all sports.

Lidge was a major reason we won last year and deserves the benefit of the doubt.
But this can’t continue to go on

Heineken always tastes like SH!t. The Heineken Light tastes better, but the regular is gross man. For one who loves a wide variety of beer, this one sucks. Its the same as Miller Lite to me. Miller Lite taste like carbonated seltzer water. Soda even. Totally fake chemical garbage.

Heineken tastes like finding an abandoned farm and drinking from a dirty stagnated pig trough. The only list it should be on is a list of the worst European beers…
Go Phils!

K-Rod ia Flamboyant Lindros-type primadonna. typical Mets signing. Get some flaming showman out there who will fold if a situation even close to the playoffs is placed on his shoulders.
Brad Lidge at least closed successfully in the World Series. K-Rod was a kid then and was not a real closer until 2005.

The Phils should be aggressive against Wolf. They should keep an eye on his pickoff move and see how much they can run on him. Bastardo needs to attack these Dodger hitters. The umpires, as has been said, need to get into the groove, too, and consistent strike throwing by Bastardo might help with that. The batters should take short, level swings at almost any fastball that comes their way so that they don’t have to flail as much at his other stuff. Small ball should be their approach tonight – base hits, sacrifice bunts, hit-and-runs. Dodger pitching is not liable to surrender a plethora of long balls; the Phils offense should adapt to that. I better see Rollins spraying hits tonight and swiping bags – he looks like he has just been taking up space lately. I wish the Phils luck and hope that we here all enjoy the ballgame.

My heart says Bastardo builds on his first start but my head is thinking back to that point in last year where a 10 game lead evaporated because of bad fundamentals and ill discipline. My inner fan conflict though is making me say trust until there’s no hope and things must look pretty good from the outside, certainly much better than it seems to us scrutinising.
As for the specifics… Can’t answer, that’s what I love about this game, any day your least talented player can be your best and vice-versa.
You feeling good about tonight?

Im cautiously optimistic about Bastardo. It’s way too much to ask of him for a repeat performance. I will say this, the Dodgers have not seen much of this guy, which could come into play here. I wouldnt expect much more than five innings.

I am Brad Lidge’s biggest supporter and seemlingly only fan right now. Regardless, he should NOT be available tonight. Save him for the Mets – and hope for the best.
I do not know how I am feeling about tonight, but LET’S GO PHILLIES!!!!

Well, I think Bastardo won’t win if he throws all fastballs tonite. I need to see his change up and I think the Dodgers do too. I think the hitters have been schooled to lay off the slider. If I was a betting man……I’d find something else to bet on, lets just put it that way.

Notice the Mets fans show up only when the Mets beat the Nats. They are nowhere to be found when the Mets are losing or when we are on a 7 game winning streak. They always want to throw up our loss record, but who holds the record for most losses in a 162 game season? 1962 NY Mets. I notice they never mention that! We are over 120 years old, so expect us to hold lots of records – good and bad.
