Philadelphia Phillies (33-22) at New York Mets (30-25)
JA Happ (4-0, 2.48 ERA) vs. Johan Santana (7-3, 2.00 ERA)
Time: 7:10 p.m.
Weather: Cloudy, 68

On the heels of Brad Lidge’s DL assignment, the Phillies face the final three games of their 10-game road trip: A three-night set with the Mets at Citi Field.
The Mets have been reeling lately, with injuries to practically have their regular team. Luckily for them, Johan Santana gets the call. The almost certain Hall of Famer is 3-0 with a 2.44 ERA against the Phillies lifetime. This season he defeated them in his only start against them — a seven-inning, 10-strikeout pseudo-masterpiece against Chan Ho Park.
The Phillies counter with rookie JA Happ, who has faced the Mets a good lot. He threw 5.2 scoreless innings against them already this season. Both Carlos Beltran and David Wright have taken Happ deep in his career.
So far Citi Field hasn’t treated Phillie regulars too well. Ryan Howard is hitting .250 (though with a home run), Raul Ibanez is hitting .250, Shane Victorino is hitting .250, Jimmy Rollins is hitting .222, Pedro Feliz is hitting .143, Chase Utley is hitless. Only Jayson Werth (.500, HR) has had real success.
Your gamenight beer: Lagunitas recently released this tall drink of water: Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’. The label is great enough, but the beer is a refreshing wheat, perfect for summer. Eat some grilled cheese and tomato soup with this.
Go Phillies!

Well, they just said on DNL, from an interview with Lidge in the Rocky Mountain Times, I think, this past December, -Lidge said when he went to his knees after the final pitch in the WFS, he felt something weird in his knee, like something went, he was waiting for the guys to get off of him because it was hurting. Not a direct quote, haven’t looked it up, but I never heard that before.

Keith, I’m thinking sometime after 9 P.M. tonight the Phils will be on the clock.
It hasn’t rained since 10 AM in NY, so they will start the game on time and should get the entire game in before the thunderstorms later tonight.

It’s gonna be a good one tonight….my prediction…..for what it’s worth…. is a low scoring game….something like 3-2 or 4-3 with the Phils on the winning end. Our hero tonight is Jayson Werth as he takes Santana yard.

Remember Charlie has tried to manoeuvre the roster to carry 3 catchers before. The bench will see a facelift soon enough but the Phils seem to be waiting on who they see as the right guy, now compensation wont be an issue mark grudzielanek?

Full Mets lineup and bench tonight

7. Church RF
8. Santos C
9. Santana P
Bench:
Fernando Martinez

* Sheffield is in left and he’s not so good at D. The faster guys – Vic, rollins – might be able to get a double out of a usual single. Hit some balls to left field Phillies!!

Bud Selig is such a fool, am struggling to find any redeeming qualities in his personality as commissioner/history…

The Braves just made a pretty terrible pick according to the guys at Baseball Prosepctus. They took a major league ready pitcher who has a #4 starter ceiling.

Griffin- maybe it was a smart move when you need pitching to get a guy you know you can get up rather than the project.

Our 8-hole hitter is hitting .309. I am not all that concerned about the bench.

NJ, some draft people are saying he’s a late first/early second round pick. They took him for financial reasons.

I wonder if anyone is going to tell the guys that making if they want to get Santana out of the game, hitting him hard or making him throw pitches is the best way to do that…9 pitches in the first inning? Come on now. Patience.

Taking pitches is not what the Phillies do well. I completely agree with the idea of them taking more pitches. But I don’t really know if it is the best approach.

Hmn… gameday online is not showing the box around the strike zone any more… I wonder if it could have anything to do with the umpires’ irregular strike zones this year.

@Morris: They could foul off pitches until they get one they like, and tire Santana out.

The strike zone box has been up for some hitters and not for others. It was just up for Rollins.

Ok, we already are going to have a tough night. Swinging at anything before pitch #3 is never good. Work Santana’s pitch count. They did this last NLDS with CC and won. I just don’t know why they won’t work his count up then pounce in the 6th or 7th. I am a sourpus tonight I know.
