As another thrilling Phillies-Mets series continues, Cole Hamels looks to even the score against New York and Mike Pelfrey tonight.

Hamels is coming off his best outing of 2009, a complete-game shutout of the Dodgers Friday night. Now he’ll face a team he hasn’t yet faced in 2009, but has had some success against throughout his career (1-3, 3.79 ERA). Backing Hamels will be an offensive attack that launched four home runs off Johan Santana last night. It was the first time in Santana’s career he allowed three home runs to left-handed hitting. All the stars were out to play last night – it was the first time all season Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Raul Ibanez and Jimmy Rollins homered in the same game.

The Mets will send out Mike Pelfrey, who has already faced the Phillies twice this season, winning both times but recording a 4.38 ERA. Pelfrey is hittable and has shown to be erratic this season, so look for the lefties to have some success. If not, tomorrow will be as big a must win as you can get in mid June.

I’m at the game tonight. Tune into my Twitter to get updates straight from the source.

Your gamenight beer: A favorite of mine from the Sam Adams franchise: It’s Cherry Wheat. This beer is perfect for May and June. With cherry flavoring, it almost overpowers the nice, Dubbel-quality brew. Don’t drink too many – it can get you inebriated quicker than you think. For dinner, eat chicken salad with ruffled potato chips. They can have their apple, we have our cherries.

Go Phillies!

Hi, just bored as hell at work. I hope Cole can pitch another gem tonight. Would like to see him go 8 strong shut out innings, ok Maybe 1 run, and the phillies having a 4-1 4-0 lead going into the 9th and bring our two week closer in to end the deal. Even though I would really really love to get K-Rod a blown save, but we can save that one until tomorrow.
I’ll be watching the game on DVR again tonight or tomorrow morning, so all the updates on here will be nice.
I see on another thread that JRoll is lead off tonight, and Vic second is that correct?

Thanks shag, but I live in New York City and have a very pregnant wife with two kids on the way, so making road trips to Philly is a little tough! I’m going to the game tomorrow night at Citi Field though, so I’m pumped about that.

Lets have a good game today. I think Pelfrey will show up today, Cole will as well. This is his first start since the “choke artist” comments and he will be ready to go. Im thinking a 4-3 final score.

I think Cora is more of a danger in the lineup than Reyes. Cora is much more focused at the plate, and always seems to do the right thing, whereas Reyes, is overrated.

Rounds 1-30 are done in the MLB Draft. Tomorrow on the last day Rounds 31-50 will be done. Phillies going with pitching and 1st basemen so far with one or two other infielders and outfielders.

Should be a pitching duel tonight with Hamels likely getting the better of it.
Tomorrow the O’s should explode for some big blasts. Likely tomorrow will come down to the late innings and the bullpens.

Nice observation LG. With Cora entrenched at SS, Reyes will no doubt be on the block when he comes back. I’m looking for the Mets to package Reyes with perhaps one of the Mets better players for an established starting pitcher. Stay tuned.

    My prediction for tonight:

Hamels goes 7IP allowing 2 runs on like 5 hits while striking out 10.
Pelfrey goes 6IP allowing 4 runs on like 9 hits.

Howard, Rollins and Werth hit solo homers.
Tatis gets a 2 run bomb.

Phillies add 1 extra run in 8th and Madson gets a 1-2-3 inning for the save.

    Philllies win 5-2.

    WP: Hamels (5-2)
    LP: Pelfrey (4-3)
    S: Madson (3)

Dipsy there is no way the Mets are even considering trading Reyes. Cora is a utility player all the way. The Mets didn’t just sign Reyes to a long term deal just to deal him for some starting pitching rental. Cmon now.

I think Reyes is overrated as well but he is still a great player. He is a fan favorite and has been an all-star shortstop and he is a young, run-scoring machine. Cora could hit .600 and they would not trade Reyes.

And hopefully Jimmy will prove me and Tim wrong, but I totally agree with his analysis earlier today. He should still be hitting sixth tonight.

With Charlie’s current thinking it takes two weeks of terrible leadoff hitting by Rollins to move him down and then only 2 days of solid production to move him back up. Those periods of time need to be more consistent. I would have left him down at the 6 spot through the weekend.

I remember when the Phillies had problems in CF. They brought in Jason Michaels, David Delluci, Kenny Lofton etc. Then came Aaron Rowand and now Shane Victorino

Dear Miles. While tone and nuance do not translate over the internet, I thought for sure everyone knew that I was taking a shot at the Little Guy (a.k.a. President of the Alex “Don’t Call Me Joey” Cora Fan Club). Of course Reyes will not be traded.

Why do these games in NY get started at 7:10? Get the freaking game going already….we have to listen to another 5 minutes of bullcrap from TMac, Sarge, and crew if you don’t start the game.

    Food for thought:

Why is the New York Media incessantly reiterating the fact that Cole called the Mets “choke artists” during the off-season? During the SNY Pregame Live Show, Darryl Strawberry intimated that Cole WILL get hurt tonight! Gary Cohen, the SNY broadcaster kept mentioning Cole’s “impetuous” remarks. What’s next? My gosh!

From a crude baseball standpoint, Hamel should (and likely will) receive a hefty 97 mph fastball to the ribs. The fans should (and will) deafen him with boisterous obscenities. Once the aforementioned activities have been accomplished, the current tempestuous mood throughout “Mets Nation” will subside.

Personally, the best way to answer Cole’s superfluous remarks is to tee off of him. I’m sure that the Mets will go to exorbitant lengths to make Cole, an ace pitcher, look like a minor leaguer.

I guess that all liberties, including the freedom of speech, have their consequences and repercussions.

What do you, Phillies Nation, think about this silly matter?

Would love a three run first inning here right now, Let’s give Cole the lead, and show the Mets how your ace is supposed to hold it down.
I think if the PHillies would have won last night Santana would have been royally pissed off, and probably would not pitch the same all year. Did you see him mouth F Off while he walk off the mound that was priceless.

Swinging at the first pitch…that is exactly what a lead off hitter is not supposed to do. Is J-Roll kidding? Honestly, is he serious? Why did Manuel move him out of the 6 hole? Sorry Charlie, but that was a dumb move.

Mets announcers just mentioned that Pelfrey has 0 strikeouts in his two games vs. the Phils this year.

Yes David, because Cole wasn’t baited WFAN or anything when those comments were made. I mean, it’s not like WFAN said “choke artists” to him at least 3 times before that and baited him to agree.

    Yeah, Chase

Hamel’s did not call the Met’s choke artists…an NY radio hosts asked Cole, baited Cole as to whether he thought the Mets were choke artists and Cole agreed with him. Personally I don’t think he should have said anything but he did. Wasn’t the smartest thing ever but oh well. The NY media are using, I would guess and hope as fuel to try and get their team to perform, to get them up for the game, I don’t blame them, I would too. But as is the case with most of the things players say, it is just much to do about nothing.

If they hit Cole with a pitch, expect Myers off the DL tomorrow to throw at Beltran’s head. Then expect Mitch Williams and Ricky Botallico to come out of the bullpen and start beaning every player that bats for the Mutts.

I still don’t think it’s a big deal. If the Mets beat him tonight they can take their shots back, and if Cole beats them he will definitely be asked about the comments and probably try to be politically correct.

David, I think the whole thing is silly, but baseball beat writers need something to talk about. So bringing it up and writing about it fills up a column.

base hit Chase, can anyone else tell how really truly bored I am at work tonight

David from Queens: Hamels (with an “s”) should not be “hit in the ribs” because he SAID something… that’s BS and not very professional… Saying something in the offseason is completely different from playing the actual game… If you hit someone, you can hit back… if you say something bad, you can say something bad back… eye for an eye

Doesn’t matter but Chase was definitely safe there wasn’t he?

Shows how much rage are in Mets fans becasue all I’ve ever heard or read from them all year is how much they want violence and a brawl. Apparently that’s the only way to vent frustrations for them.

    y doesn’t everyone just hit everyone, oh wait . . .

Miles, nah, I don’t think Chase was safe. And regardless, they still threw to first and would’ve had Howard anyway. So it’s a non-issue.

They just played the “choke artists” quote on TV. It’s rather clear he was baited.

Wow…they are actually replaying the “choke artists” audio clip… typical NY… Grow up!

Tracey, try telling that to NY media or Mets fans. They like to skew quotes wrongly.

  • Posts: 0 David, the Mets fan from Queens

Regardless of whether or not Hamels was baited, he still could have rephrased his original statement. No one put a gun to Hamels’ head and coerced him to say what he said. What he said was pejorative and mindless. A mindless comment over a mindless topic.

“That’s kind of what WE [the Phillies] believe…” – Cole Hamels

That comment was in reference to what the PHILLIES BALL CLUB think of the Mets; that they find ways to lose games.

    I believe it’s a silly matter altogether.

You seem to be right, Ed R.; a fuel to a Mets fire that seems to be burning ever so slowly and lightly.

  • Posts: 0 David, the Mets fan from Queens

    SJ Mike,

I believe that an altering of quotes is not simply a marginal issues; it’s rampant.
