Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (34-23) at New York Mets (31-26)
Jamie Moyer (4-5, 6.27 ERA) vs. Tim Redding (0-2, 6.97 ERA)
Time: 7:10 p.m. at Citi Field, Queens, NY
Weather: Rain, 64
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
It might be raining, but if the Phillies and Mets hook up tonight, it’ll be a storm of a different kind brewing at Citi Field. So far in the three-game series we’ve seen two one-run games, one extra-inning game, a bunch of home runs (including three from Chase Utley), great pitching, bad pitching, great defense, bad pitching, clutch hitting, bonehead hitting and plenty of noise. Just your typical Phils and Mets tussle.
Last night Cole Hamels couldn’t survive long, while Mike Pelfrey gave the Mets a solid start. But while the Mets couldn’t solve their own problems against the Phils bullpen, the good guys got theirs. In extras, the Phils escaped every Mets rally until Utley could post his second longball, winning the game. Tonight there might be more longballs: Jamie Moyer and Tim Redding – owners of ERAs north of 6.00 – hook up.
Of course, Redding is known as a certified Phillie Killer. For his career he’s 5-3 with a 3.29 ERA against the Phils. Last year he was mixed in five starts – one dominating (shutout) and one horrid (seven earned), but then three pretty normal starts. Hopefully the Phils can do more than normal against Redding.
Moyer had trouble last time against the Mets, giving up a couple home runs and being lifted early. This season he’s 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA against the Metropolitans.
Your gamenight beer: Citi Field has something good going for it: Big Apple Brews, a nice centrally located kiosk in the centerfield midway. Among the good beers in bottle there were Leffe (a Belgian blonde) and Goose Island IPA. This complex brew has the potent hops, but also contains sweet tastes of citrus. You’ll find it enjoyable, even if you’re at Citi Field (which, as I’ll post tomorrow, is actually a nice ballpark). Chow on some fried shrimp and Basmati rice with this.
Go Phillies!

okay – i know why sinkerballers give our guys headaches but Redding…looks like throws a high slider and gets some our guys who like the high cheese…other than he’s nothing special… ideas anyone?

Martinez may prove me wrong later in the game but I’m not sure I agree with Manuel’s choice to play him tonight. Young guys don’t have the best track record against Jamie.
Side note: Since when did Wright become unstoppable on the basepaths? Good heavens can we just keep the guy at first, please?

Thats 4 singles and 3 steals for David Wright in 13 innings. He is a Phillie Killer.
Moyer threw 16 pitches in first. 16 in second.
Feliz, Coste and Moyer for Phillies.

That’s a fair assessment of my mentioned quote, and I’m sorry if you were offended. I believe that it is a point of view that is shared amongst most fans, so I will stand by that. Do I regret posting it? Judging from your sensitive reaction, I do now.
Although what you say is true about the word “dislike,” it can only mean “hate” if the user feels that way. Since you cannot ascertain whether or not I meant to use the word “hate” instead of “dislike,” you have to presume what I mean or take me for my word. If you want to take me for my word, then take this: I chose the word “dislike” deliberately and mean just that.

Miles whats the difference between what Jeff said, and maybe him coming on here and saying something like… Philly fans are drunks that are overly rambunctious? Just curious.

j reed i have NO idea. Maybe it is just a mental thing. Obviously we CAN score off of him since we put up the 7 earned last year that Tim mentioned in the original post. My best guess is that guys are trying to hit home runs and should just be looking for a gap or trying to swing up the middle.

Because I expect that out of Mets fans Brian….I just think its dumb that someone who at least appears to be a Phillies fan would be that upset at Charlie, Jamie, etc. It’s a first place team that just won a WS so the complainers need to get a grip. That’s my main beef…

Dan I. is being seemingly consistent with his strike zone. So far, so good.

I must leave now. Good night, Phillies Nation.
I’ll leave by saying that the bloop attack is being reciprocated by the Phillies tonight.

David, honestly the thing I took offense to was not what you said about Werth at all. That as everything else is your opinion, what I do take offense to is you coming onto a Phillies only site (only meaning not associated with MLB.com, or any other team but I respect your right to be on here and comment). Back to it though, I take offense to you coming on here and calling me a drunk that is [are] overly rambunctious.

Not Coste’s fault there….Jamie has to get that on the ground. Time for Jimmy to go big or go home (NO BUNTING JIMMY!)

Moyer bunt pops out. Not a good move because Moyer is slow and a grounder by Rollins will result in a DP.

I shall be cautious then of judging Phillies fan, and remain objective. You’re absolutely right in that regard, Brian of CO.
Good night!

The Indians just traded Jack Parkman for Tanaka. Parkman was just not a right fit for the Indians. Threw off the chemistry. I think Rube Baker can handle catching for the year.

Ok, we won a game yesterday, if we win today, that is back to back games. If we win tomorrow, we got ourselves a winning streak!

The pitcher is retired! Apparently there is still at least one thing Jamie can do that Cole cannot (at least in this series haha).

Does it make me less of a fan because I am totally sucked into Major League 2, and I am watching that instead of the Phillies game?

Whoooaaaa Pedro! I still can’t believe he made that error in the L.A. game. That might have been the most shocked I’ve been by something that happened in one of our games all year. Chan Ho’s two shutout innings last night were a close second.

No Morris it is baseball related and a great movie….although it is Mets/Phils dude, so that doesn’t help your cause.

Red Sox just went up one on the Yankees. I wonder if the Yankees knew about CC’s history of meltdowns in pressure situations. CC’s wikipedia page is pretty funny.

Ugh…Beltran took three pitches that were dangerously close and then got his pitch. That is so tough. Jamie has a hard time getting guys with that much discipline out.

For the most part this year, it has been hard to watch Jaime pitch.

Well only gave up 1 run in that inning.

I would say it was hard to watch Jamie pitch against the Dodgers and Mets the first time around. The other outings he gave up 4 or less, and the Offense is usually stagnant when Jamie is on the mound. I am more afraid of the Offense only scoring 1 or 2 when Moyer pitches then I am of him pitching.

Usually, I don’t like watching Jamie pitch just because everything is so slow and the game feels soooo long…

Moyer got shelled against the Mets and Dodgers the first time around against both teams, other than that he has hovered around 3-4 runs in about 6 innings, which isnt horrible. His ERA is high because he REALLY got shelled those outings. The major problem seems to be, when Moyer Pitches, the Offense for some reason is COLD.

Its not very often than we have Utley, Howard and Ibanez up to bat and all 3 go out in order honestly, but sadly, it seems the norm with Moyer on the mound.

Brian that wasn’t the case at the beginning of the season and for almost all of last year so its an interesting turn. I’m not sure why, maybe unfavorable matchups? (Like Redding….unbelievable).
HOLY LORD! RAAUUUUUUUULLLL!
