Gameday 2009, Posts
Philadelphia Phillies (34-23) at New York Mets (31-26)
Jamie Moyer (4-5, 6.27 ERA) vs. Tim Redding (0-2, 6.97 ERA)
Time: 7:10 p.m. at Citi Field, Queens, NY
Weather: Rain, 64
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
It might be raining, but if the Phillies and Mets hook up tonight, it’ll be a storm of a different kind brewing at Citi Field. So far in the three-game series we’ve seen two one-run games, one extra-inning game, a bunch of home runs (including three from Chase Utley), great pitching, bad pitching, great defense, bad pitching, clutch hitting, bonehead hitting and plenty of noise. Just your typical Phils and Mets tussle.
Last night Cole Hamels couldn’t survive long, while Mike Pelfrey gave the Mets a solid start. But while the Mets couldn’t solve their own problems against the Phils bullpen, the good guys got theirs. In extras, the Phils escaped every Mets rally until Utley could post his second longball, winning the game. Tonight there might be more longballs: Jamie Moyer and Tim Redding – owners of ERAs north of 6.00 – hook up.
Of course, Redding is known as a certified Phillie Killer. For his career he’s 5-3 with a 3.29 ERA against the Phils. Last year he was mixed in five starts – one dominating (shutout) and one horrid (seven earned), but then three pretty normal starts. Hopefully the Phils can do more than normal against Redding.
Moyer had trouble last time against the Mets, giving up a couple home runs and being lifted early. This season he’s 0-1 with a 13.50 ERA against the Metropolitans.
Your gamenight beer: Citi Field has something good going for it: Big Apple Brews, a nice centrally located kiosk in the centerfield midway. Among the good beers in bottle there were Leffe (a Belgian blonde) and Goose Island IPA. This complex brew has the potent hops, but also contains sweet tastes of citrus. You’ll find it enjoyable, even if you’re at Citi Field (which, as I’ll post tomorrow, is actually a nice ballpark). Chow on some fried shrimp and Basmati rice with this.
Go Phillies!

Back to Victorino’s at bat. I cant see it, but was it smart to swing at a 2-1 pitch which appeared to be outside the strike zone? Again I cant see if it really was outside the strikezone.

If the Mets release Redding, the Phils should pick him up just so he doesn’t pitch against them anymore. For some reason he seems to always do well against them.

Wright is hitting 667 this series…anyone going to figure out that maybe you should pitch around him? Just wondering.

Haha! This reminds me of the Vladimir Guerrero days when he was with Montreal and the Phillies NEVER got him out!

Ed R.- looked at Raul’s stituational stats. from 2003 to 2008…he slows around this time but not drastically..Looks like July and Aug. is when his stats. get a little ugly.

Brian it looked like it was in the zone to me, but the real problem is that it was offspeed and not the pitch he should have been looking for. Gotta find a way to hit one hard there.
Nice DP btw, although once again a blown call at first. Do these umps ever get disciplined for consistent bad umpiring?

Nice DP but DAvid Wright is no doubt a “Single” machine. Moyer has pitched past 100 pitches. 6IP, 8H, 3R, 3ER. Quality start. Hopefully he doesn’t get the loss. Moyer reduces ERA to 6.14.

Well Jamie has certainly had starts where his line was worse then how he actually pitched but I do believe tonight was the opposite.
He could have very easily given up 4-5 runs in this game but kudos to him for at least getting outs with guys on third so that those two runs were at least traded for outs. That kept it close. Now let’s go out there, get a couple of runs, and get the old man a W!

I would use Stairs here if I were Charlie but I guess he disagrees. They don’t have a lefty up so there is no way they could burn him.

good point Miles, Had Stairs walked and Rollins done the same thing, we may not have scored at all. So what we are looking at is a no decision at best for Moyer. Scared to see Condrey up but Moyer only gave up 3er in 6 IP. Not ideal, but still not a bad start really at all.

@Brian: It’s a respectable performance for Moyer, and improves his ERA for the season. Still, I’d like to see him get his 251st W

I agree Tracey, and I am very glad to not see a bunch of Moyer bashing on here. Ive been supporting him this whole time, and normally, most games he pitches, whether he gives up 2 or 10, its nothing but “here we go again” and “geezer need to retire” Glad to see a quality outing, and glad to see levelheadedness tonight toward “the teacher”

Shane has had a terrible series offensively. I would have loved for him to get something going there with the lefties coming up.
