Boston Red Sox (36-24) at Philadelphia Phillies (35-23)
Jon Lester (5-5, 5.09 ERA) vs. Joe Blanton (4-3, 5.46 ERA)
Time: 7:05 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
Weather: Partly sunny, 81
TV: Comcast SportsNet
Twitter: Phillies Nation
Two of the best teams in baseball hook up at Citizens Bank Park tonight when Red Sox Nation invades Phillies Nation.
Last season the Phillies defiantly took the first of a three-game series against the Sox, but they came right back and grabbed the final two games in convincing fashion. One of the pitchers who subdued the Phils was Jon Lester, who tonight is coming in with a high ERA but good recent starts. He took a perfect game into the seventh inning last time against the Rangers, striking out 23 in his last two outings.
Offensively the Red Sox have seen production from most of their usual suspects. Kevin Youkilis is hitting .350, and Dustin Pedroia is at .306. Jason Bay has socked 16 home runs, providing the big thump in the lineup. Meanwhile, their bullpen has also been strong. They added Takashi Saito to the ‘pen for 2009, and he’s been gold, joining Hideki Okajima, Manny Delcarmen, Ramon Ramirez and, of course, Jonathan Papelbon. They’ve balanced what has been a shaky rotation.
The Phillies took two of three from their rivals, the Mets, just as the Sox pounded the Yankees (sweeping them). Very similar to the Sox, the Phils have a strong offense and solid bullpen. But they lost one piece of it, as Scott Eyre hit the disabled list today. Kyle Kendrick is up, meaning it’s possible recent callup Antonio Bastardo moves into the second lefty reliever role with Kendrick getting a start.
Your gamenight beer: A spring seasonal from Flying Dog, Garde Dog is a worthy Biere de Garde entry. It’s a bit tart, loaded with malts to create a toasted body. But why Garde Dog? Because tonight we protect our house. This is Phillies Nation. Let’s keep it that way.
Go Phillies!

Ruben Amaro Jr. said on DNL that Kendrick is pitching out of the bullpen.

Why didn’t they bring Escalona up??? Kendrick is just brutal. He’ll fill the Chan Ho role of 6th inning scrub since Park has apparently elevated himself. Uggggh.

@Tim: It’s early. The stands tend to fill out over time.

I really wish they would go back to starting games at 7:30 again. it’s hard to get to the stadium by 7 for most people. At least Friday night games at 7:30.

@Morris: Yeah, but bad news for the Red Sox is good news for the Yankees, so it’s a mixed blessing. :)

There are still a few hockey teams that do a 7:30 start, and I love it so much.

I lived in Japan, and there games start at 6. So you get off work and go straight to the bar to watch the game. That is the hook up.

Yeah, can’t argue with a no-out, run-scoring SAC.

That is what I enjoy about watching the Dodgers, one of the announcers said it, “They don’t bludgeon you to death, they paper cut you to death.”

I’m stuck with gamecast. My girlfriend just got Punch Out for the Wii. I get the tv at 8. I reckon I missed a good catch.
