Glavine? Padilla? No, And No

The Phillies are allegedly going to sign Tom Glavine or take Vicente Padilla from the Rangers. If the reports are true, the Phillies are close to out of their minds.
Okay, maybe we shouldn’t be that drastic. But signing either Glavine or Padilla would send wrong messages and frankly, be the wrong ways to forward your team.
At this point the Phils are three games ahead of the competition in the National League East, and we’ve just begun June play. Though Brett Myers is on the shelf and will likely miss the remainder of the season, multiple options stand to fill the rotation. And already, one option (Antonio Bastardo) dazzled enough to earn another start or two. Behind him is the ace Cole Hamels, the reliable Joe Blanton, the semi-reliable Jamie Moyer and an emerging JA Happ. And of course, that’s not all: Behind them are Kyle Kendrick, Andrew Carpenter, Carlos Carrasco, Vance Worley, Kyle Drabek and a few retreads and stopgaps. Plus Ruben Amaro Jr. has already made it clear the team’s focus to trade for an elite-level pitcher before the non-waiver trade deadline.
Simply put, this is no time to retreat to unstable or unproven veterans.
Glavine – whom is garnering the lion’s share of rumor – went 2-4 with a 5.54 ERA last season for Atlanta. His FIP (factoring the numbers out over an equal plane) was 6.02. More ghastly totals: 1.56 HR/9, 5.26 BB/9. In Philadelphia, that won’t cut it at all. In rehab starts he was hitting 83-85 on his fastball, which doesn’t seem good, but Glavine’s fastball doesn’t need to be hard. It moves, and it’s a location pitch, setting up his down breaking stuff.
Sound familiar?
Look, it’s not that Jamie Moyer isn’t good, or any of that. But we’ve seen the type of damage inflicted on Moyer this season, especially by seasoned hitters on well-coached teams. Who do the Phillies play this month? The Dodgers, the Mets, the Red Sox, the Blue Jays – powerful offenses with seasoned hitters. If the Phillies want to loan Glavine until they grab an elite arm, they’re jepoardizing being bounced around like a pinball.
Then there’s Padilla, who forever had elite “stuff” but couldn’t match it because of his emotional issues. This season he’s carrying a 5.57 ERA, though his truer indicators (FIP, HR/9, WHIP, etc.) say he’s better than you think. Still, is locking up Padilla for a “test run” better than testing out a younger, more stable pitcher such as Bastardo?
I’m not all for playing veteran musical chairs with a rotation spot. I’m reminded of the 2006 Mets, who tested everyone from Alay Soler to Geremi Gonzalez to Jose Lima in their rotation before finally resorting to giving a youngster named John Maine a shot. Sometimes youth just works.
Moreover, youth sends a positive message to these players: “We’re confident in who we grew, and we think they can help lead us to another championship.” Nothing screams desperation more than inking an aged left-hander to a short-term deal, a “test drive.”
So, instead of going with the unstable or unproven veterans, stick with the guns. They may surprise.

I’m trying to make sense of these rumors and it seems like the guy who was quoted in these doesn’t have any idea as to what he’s talking about. First with Glavine, not only is he old and past his prime, but he’d be another lefty in a roation and staff full of them(not a bad thing but they could use another righty starter).
And as for Padilla, why would the Phillies want him back and why woud he come back after they gave him away for nothing. He was a failed project his first time and isn’t going to help now.

I went into every site I could find not one person didn’t say the braves stole this guy. the three prospect are not that highly regarded by scouts, and Herdanez has no power, and top 100 how many years has Gio Gonzalez been top 100. I don’t know where you get your information but respected people all say this was a steal. mlb said it but you think a prospect with no power is better than a good outfielder who can steal a base with power isn’t going to help the braves. sure glad you aren’t our G.M.

I saw enough when Glavine pitched the last game of the season against the Marlins and gave up 7 runs. He is washed up. Bring in Oswalt. Get rid of Moyer. WORLD SERIES CHAMPS…BOO YA

Tim, I agree with your closing comment on this post. Nothing will build confidence in your young guns more than sticking to them in this situation. Getting unsure veterans will send a message to them that says the FO has NO confidence in them and that is no way to show appreciation in how hard they are working.
These young pitchers are getting positive press almost daily throughout our pharm system so let’s show them how appreciative we are and let them give it a go.
So Rueben, BE CONFIDENT and let the stars of tomorrow show us they can start today.

i’m surprised nobody has mentioned we kinda owe tom glavine. he was half responsible for my best “in attendance” baseball moment ever, clinching the NL East on the last game of the 2007 season. when that 7-0 marlins score hit the board, the bank erupted, and the rest was pretty much a party/countdown. if it wasn’t for glavine being so awful that day, they might not have even been WFCs. put him in the pen if he takes it.

Here is what I want!
I want a STUD!
Halladay basically,
If that is not available which I am sure is not than, leave it alone and let the young guys get their shot. If we are in the middle of July and nothing is working like Bastardo falls out and everythin in the farm goes boom, then pick up a Marquis. Otherwise Keep what we got.
I would rather through Drabek than Glavine or Padilla.
I hated Padilla the first time around

We need a No.2. Period. Nothing less, nothing more.

In the here and NOW all I want is to see Bastardo make two or three more starts before the FO starts going outside. C’mon, isn’t the reality to see what WE have first? Myers was good, not great. That being said he was also one of my favorite pitchers but we don’t need to go get someone because we lost him.
Who’s With ME?
LET BASTARDO PITCH!

Tim,
Agree… that’s why you have a “Farm System” and KK (who won 14 games for us) and the others need the chance to show thier stuff… Glavine should retire and Padilla is a real nut job…

Glavine wont sign a minor league contract. He’s a future 1st ballot hall of famer. If he isnt good enough for the Braves, he certainly isnt good wnouhg for the Phils

One thing that puzzles me is a guy comes up and has one good game, And someone saids they knew what they were doing, Go check what Marty Bystrom did for us in 1980, then see what his career was after he started 6-0. The braves have brought up Hanson because he is the best pitching prospect in the league. Better than Price. This kid is ready.almost unhittable when he pitches so far, The one negative I have read is he has a weird type motion and they think he might hurt his arm.

Don’t know if anyone mentioned it – but Padilla on waivers means the Phils would have to eat up his contract from the Rangers. All 8 million of it. No thanks!
I’m with most everyone else – let the young guys continue to prove themselves. I still think a move for a solid #2 near the deadline might be necessary, but that doesn’t mean management needs to make any hasty moves.

Is everybody on crack??? Pick up Glavine??? Are you SERIOUS??? He is done! He’s been done for years! Honestly, the only way you pick up a Padilla is if they aren’t going to trade for a Peavy or Oswalt. Bc honestly if they trade for another Joe Blanton, you might as well sign Padilla bc he is the same, back of the rotation, inconsistent starter.

Does anyone think the Phillies would eat Padilla contract?. The rangers put him on waivers so they could unload his contract, and go after Oswalt, now we are to believe that the phillies will pay that salary.
