Heyman: Tough To Gauge Peavy’s Interest In Phils

From now until July, the Phillies and the term “available starting pitching” will fit and become numbingly nauseating. With Brett Myers on the shelf, there are multiple names out in the open. I’ll give my opinion soon. For now, here’s a nugget from Jon Heyman – who spoke to Ruben Amaro Jr. – about Jake Peavy.
From Heyman:
Peavy is the logical fit for the Phillies. However, he has full no-trade veto power. To this point, there’s no indication Peavy has any interest in coming to the East Coast, especially to a team in a clear hitters’ park. (While agent Barry Axelrod publicly said the Phils would fulfill Peavy’s goal to play in the National League for a winner, he wasn’t as certain about the geographic concern). Plus, in terms of fan passion, Philly is about as opposite from San Diego as he’d find. Amaro declined to discuss Peavy (or anyone currently playing elsewhere), though it’s no surprise someone familiar with their thinking said Peavy is at or near the top of their list.
Heyman then lists some other options, which include Roy Oswalt, Cliff Lee, Erik Bedard, Chris Young and Aaron Harang. I have to say, though, that it doesn’t look as if Peavy will come to Philadelphia. He likes the West Coast, enjoys not being pressured and wants to remain close to his family (who seems not likely to move from California).

Oh, I was never not over it. Just just seem to dislike every pitcher in the league. What pitcher would YOU want?

I would take a serious look at Brad Penny, Cliff lee, and check into brandon Webb, yeah hes hurt but a sinker ball pitcher is perfect for CBP. Thats why they should have gone hard after Lowe.

Wait a second, you just bashed all those guys and now you mention Brad “Ow, My Arm” Penny and Cliff “One Year Wonder” Lee (I thought you liked guys with proven track records) and Brandon Webb. You’re a fickle sort my friend.

Chase, Hewitt hasn’t started his season yet because the phillies didnt feel confident enough to put him in lakewood so he will likely start in williamsport or repeat the GCL, so his season will start June 19th when those two teams start

I didn’t bash them, I just don’t want to mortgage the future skill positions or starters for them. The guys I mentioned you can get much cheaper. And like I said in my first post, its time to let the young guns show what they have. Bastardo is gonna surprise people, Blanton will settle down, Happ is here to stay. You lookin to send away a potentially solid starter to get a guy back whos gonna fall apart at the Bank? What happens when we send Marson, Happ, Donald, and Bastardo to SD for Peavy only to watch him implode in a smaller park? Or to Seattle only to watch Bedard sour the clubhouse? Or Harang, who pitches a good game or two then gets rocked for a couple in a row? All I’m sayin is look hard hard at the guys that are cheaper but ultimately just as effective in our park. Why do you think no one wanted to give Matt Holliday big bucks last year? Because they knew that getting him out of Coors he won’t be the same player, and hes not, hes still good, just not out of this world.

This yahoo Heyman just said on MLB Network that S.F. would entertain offers for Cain and Sanchez. Personally, I hope Bastardo is the real deal and shows it out of the gate. I also hope Blanton and Moyer can find some consistency. Anyways, what’s the 411 on Cain?

The Giants have been rumoured to be encouraging offers for Sanchez period and they’d be willing to move Cain IF they received a bat of his talent.

mikemike. I think they certainly would take that package. What on Earth more could they want? And can someone explain to me why I listen raptly to Ken Rosenthal taling trades even though I know full well he has no idea what he’s talking about?

Cain is on fire, the giants want a big league bat. so who do we have that they would take. My guess is it oakland who will move holiday. and then try to trade cain next year or take the two draft choices.

Dipsy it’s cause Ken Rosenthal fills us with the idea that real baseball can be played like fantasy baseball and he has the journalistic integrity of Saddam Hussein’s PR man…

NJ (my new found friend). Ubaldo Jimenez? Any chance he would be available? He’s got great stuff. Slowey from the Twins? Those are two guys to think about. They would help. Not sure if Colorado would trade Jimenez. There are only a handful of guys I wold believe about trade rumours. Peter Gammons, Chris Mortenson, and (wince) Howard Eskin. Eskin doesn’t report on rumours a lot but when he does they tend to come fact.

Would seriously doubt it, young controllable pitchers are such a commodity and don’t see what we’d have to offer for either. Don’t forget good old Buster, he’s earned the respect of baseball fans to me.
I think the Phils definitely have a comparable pitcher to Jiminez in Carrasco as a hard throwing young lanky pitcher with control issues. I have to admit I’d like Peavy because I think once he gets on the mound he’s money but I don’t really believe it’ll happen which is the same as Halladay. When a name like Bedard is thrown about and the commitment it’ll take to luring him I just look down at the depth chart at Carrasco, Bastardo, Drabek, Savery, Knapp, Worley and then at guys like Kendrick, Carpenter, Naylor and I know it doesn’t help this year but I can’t help but think of all the guys around the young pitchers around the majors we’d love to have and think we have to hope the organisation commits to getting these guys up because logic says at least a couple will turn into something and a couple more will feature in some way.

Dipsy glad to see you are someone else who realizes that Eskin doesn’t b.s. He may be a grade A a$$hole but when he talks, he is generally right. He absolutely doesn’t talk rumor and seems to have a lot of connections in the business.
This may sound sick, but I am almost glad Myers got hurt. I don’t mean that I am glad he is in pain and actually hurt, I’d never wish that on anyone. But chances are he wasn’t going to be a Phillie after this year. Now we have over half a season to find out who his replacement will be. Now we get to figure it our during the year and not over the off season or during spring training, which as you saw with Chan Ho “my pitches get Parked” spring training means nothing in determining whether you are worth the uniform you put on or not.

I especially love how peavy wanted to goto the braves, who obviously play in ATL but somehow Philly is too far east. I’m kind of fed up with him and do not want him, do we really need our top two starters to be more worried about the post game back rub, more than the game?? The only guy i give up the farm for is Doc Halladay, but good luck getting him.

IMO the no trade clause is so that you don’t get traded to teams like the Nats, Royals, Rockies, Orioles, Pirates, HIS OWN TEAM the Padres. Haha.
I agree that sports are to win, and who ever said it’s about “fun” is bullspitting. If it’s about fun, why do the Yankees have a 200 M dollar payroll every year to win a title? Why play if your main goal every year isn’t to win a Title? His comments show he has no heart, grit, or toughness. He’s concerned about his own little numbers, and how he’s going to deal with the pressure.
Here’s another thing, he would prefer to go to the Cubs right? How about if they make the playoffs? I bet their’s a lot more pressure on that team to win, considering it’s been over 100 years.

The more I think about it, the more I think Bedard is a good option — even if the guy’s a dick. He’s a rental. Even if he’s not a good “clubhouse guy,” we’d only be employing him in the clubhouse for three months. If he gives us quality starts, including a few in the playoffs, then that’s all I want.
After the season, he can take his attitude wherever he wants while we use the leftover money from Eaton/Jenkins/Feliz/Blanton (contract only through this year, though I think we have an option for next year) to look for a FA. Or maybe one of the young guys is ready next year — whatever. My point is, three months is maybe not enough time for Bedard to be a cancer, especially since we’re a winning team.

Lewisauce – I agree he’s a really good option but another lefty is concerning. Also, I would really like to know if he’s going to be a type A or B FA or neither. That status is also important. So if we give up 4 prospects for him we are really on giving up 2 since we will get 2 picks back at us.

I only saw one mention of Matt Cain from the Giants.. they are trying to move Sanchez, who is a Lefty.. and not all that good.
Cain would look good in Phillies pinstripes.. any word on if the Giants will move him, or what they are looking for in return?

Cain would look great in Philly but its a pretty remote link. The strongest rumor was last season when the Giants and Brewers were reported to have been talking about a deal including Cain and Fielder. All reports have suggested the Giants are only willing to listen to offers for Cain including a bat of his talent which is something the Phils can’t offer.
