Great post by jeff. At this point with the way the team is playing and with the team staying with the same personnel that it has, it is hard to see how this team can win it all this year. In a game against the Orioles, Manuel had Chan Ho pitching the eighth inning with the Phillies in the lead and Chan did a great job getting the Orioles out. In comes Madsen in the ninth and we all know what happened. Why not let Park in to pitch the ninth if he is getting people out? Manuel over manages and over thinks himself too much. Is it gospel that the closer has to always be brought in in the final inning? Charlie needs to think outside the box once in a while.

When the sun comes out on a consistent basis Rollins will knock the cover off the baseball regardless of where he bats in the order. It was tough watching the Phillies lose 3 in a row to the Orioles however, my nephew Nolan Reimold was just brought up by the Oriole he is doing well and we all know “Blood’s thicker than water”.

Back to baseball.

OK, we know we need another starter, but some small moves can help. Minor tweaks.

Lead off Victorino for a spell. Put Rollins two and make him bunt if Vic gets on. Maybe he’ll learn something about discipline at the plate. He doesn’t go back to leadoff until he does. Traschner is not a multiple innings pitcher so stop using him that way. Bruntlett as a bat off the bench. Are you kidding me.

Here is what I am having a problem with. I am a huge Phillies fan. I love this team. Last year everything came together. When you look at our pitching from last season you are shocked we won it all. Moyer had a nice season but there were plenty of games were he got rocked. We should of shook his hand and let him go. He might be good from time to time but you cant rely on him. Happ and Bastardo are our future but you are not winning it all with them. The bullpen is been so over used this year. I dont know if they will make it to the end. Last year Lidge was perfect and we just barley won the division…I have many issues with Manuel. First Rollins who I never have loved on this team. Yes he is a great defense of player. I hope steroids were not involved because his power went away. He has a big mouth. I understand when he scores we win. Charlie moved him to the 6th hole and guess what he started hitting the ball. Then he moves him back. WHY? He is just slumpping in the number one hole. Howard is a very very streaky player. I would of never given him that big contract. Go year to year and then trade him at the end. He makes alot of big outs and swings at almost every bad slider. Drives us nuts. Utley is struggling but he is so good you cant yell. Werth is streaky as well. To up and down and that hurts this team. Ruiz and Feliz are finally coming back down to earth. They are not .300 hitters. Ibanez will also come back down. He is solid and will be for the rest of the season. Our bench is pathetic. Stairs is good but Bako, Bruntlett, Coste, and Dobbs. Please. We play yo you with our AAA guys. Leave Mayberry alone. I understand why Stairs was in there but Mayberry is a better ball player. Charlie out thinks himself. We need to make a couple trades. Fast. Not at the deadline. Soon. We all can thank the Mets for allowing us to stay in first. Just think we would be 6 up if not for this bad slump but they could say the same thing. You cant get swept by these bad teams. Finally I think we can all put Madson as a closer to rest. Lidge is the man and I hope he returns to form. We have a tough series coming up and Moyer leads off. We need to hold our breathe because you dont know which Moyer will show…

in order for the bullpen to improve, starting pitching must improve!! you can’t blame the bullpen for being overworked – that’s the situation they were put in as a result of the bad pitching.

but, cole hamels did exactly what he needed to do yesterday – went deep into the game, gave the bullpen a rest, and only gave up 2 runs. its sad to see that he had to get a loss because he certainly did not deserve it.

Many are saying that the AL Eastern Division is superior to the NL Eastern Division and that the AL is better than the NL. This is the second year in a row that we have seen the Phillies flounder against the American League. Last year it was a series against Boston and the remainder of the games against the AL Western Division. On the other hand, it makes me wonder sometimes if the Phillies as a team do not care for inter-league play and have trouble getting motivated for it. Will be interesting to see how the Phillies fare two or three years down the road and longer against AL teams; whether similar losing trends continue.

the bullpen is overworked…this takes me back to my arguement that charlie can not manage a game…our starters need to suck it up and go back out another inning…a 100 pitch outing here and there is not going to hurt them…plus it puts us in a bind with our bench…

In my opinion, The Bullpen gets more blame than the offense..

we averaged over 4 runs per game in the 9 game homestand..
including:
a 6-11 Loss to Boston..
a 7-8 Loss to Toronto..
a 5-6 Loss to Baltimore..

(2-5 loss with Kyle Kendrick in the game for some reason.. and Dobbs’ “HR” not even reviewed in extra innings)..

as bad as the phils are playing they are still up 2 in the division and they were not really out of any of the games that they lost…a call here a seeing eye hit there and they easily could be 4-2 in their last 6…

If the Phillies would have gone 5-4, or even 4-5 on this past home stand, it would not have been as bad of a disaster as going 1-8 and the main reason they did not was because of a lack of run support for the starters. Except for maybe two or three of the games, the starters pitched well enough to win had the offense did their job like they have done, for the most part, in the past.

Honestly.. I’m pretty sure most of them would rather play in St. Louis or something where as long as you don’t slap their mother’s .. the fans love you..

I boo Rolen just for kicks, but I don’t hold anything against him or Schilling.. the team didn’t have any commitment to win.. and they wanted to go somewhere that gave them a chance to win.

I’m reading Jayson Stark’s book WORTH THE WAIT right now.. and lots of quotes about how Rollins and Burrell took it upon themselves to try to give this city a winning team.. to try to put Philadelphia baseball back on the map.

Funny how a new stadium and record payrolls translate to winning baseball.. but can you really blame Rolen for not wanting to hit behind Doug Glanville and Desi Relaford ?? or Schilling for having a staff of Bruce Chen, Robert Person.. Jeff Brantley and Wayne Gomes for the late-innings pitchers.. etc..

Its Philadelphia, they know theyre going to get bood if they play poorly no matter who they are. Thats what makes Phialdelphia unique as a sports town and why a lot of players LOVE to play here. Because they appreciate the passion and dedication of their fans. They know that we want to win here more than any other sports city and almost everyone of them will tell you they love being a part of it.

Maybe there are a few guys who are d-bags (Scott Rolen, maybe Rollins, Maybe Utley if you really pressed him) who complain but most of the guys like being in a city where it MATTERS what you do on the field.

I just read the article by Paul Hagen in the Daily News, “As Rollins slumps, so slump the Phillies”.. and two things stood out, both kinda pissed me off..

first, the notion that Rollins’ slumping is new news, or relates directly to these losses, is just wrong. While he did have a bad series vs. the Orioles (No hits, 3 walks, No runs scored).. just days before that he was hot vs. the Blue Jays, (5 hits in 3 games) .. and we managed to lose those games too.. so there is more to this team slumping than what Rollins does at the top ..

the second thing that got me mad was this about the booing, “Rollins went 0-for-4 and with each succeeding out, the boos seemed just a little louder. And while that backlash would seem to be behavior that defines the term “front-runners” …- ”

it bothers me that people were angry that he said what he said last year.. AND.. that people are booing the players that helped us win before.. and that are out there everyday trying ..

Boo Jack Taschner.. Boo Bastardo for giving up 2 out, 0-2 count RBI hits to the opposing pitcher.. Boo Ryan Madson for giving up game-winning HRs .. but don’t boo the regulars, the guys who day-in, day-out give us something to be proud of, and who brought winning baseball back to Philadelphia!

Hard to understand how a team that looked so good during a 3-week stretch, winning 16 of 20, could then lose 8 out of 9. Obviously injuries are part of the story.

I just hope the Phils have hit what turns out to be their rock-bottom, and it’s onward and upward from here.

didnt see the game. but i know the opposing pitcher was 4-7 with over a 5 ERA. so question, why couldn’t the phillies hit? were they just swinging at bad balls out of the zone or striking out alot??

I take that back, we will be the World Champs. Lets go mets, I slept on it and I have decided we will sweep the struggling Cardinals and take all the games from the AL. Johan will pitch on 4 days rest at 160 pitches per game and K-Rod will be sharp. We can do it and I know we will be WACs 2009! Phillies mean nothing to me, which is why I even concern my time on YOUR site. Again, Let’s go mets.
