The Philadelphia Phillies will likely be buyers at the July 31 trade deadline. In the past, they may have been looking for a right-handed bat, but now the priority is pitching, starters and relievers. There are a few pitchers the Phillies scouted.
- They have looked at Brad Penny the most, but it is unsure whether the Red Sox make him available with Daisuke Matsuzaka on the disabled list.
- They scouted Chien-Ming Wang in case the Yankees decide to make him available.
- They have also looked at Jarod Washburn and Jason Marquis.

Who among that list makes the Phillies better? I can confindently say that some make them worse! I don’t want this crap where we’re trading the future for some stiffs who won’t even help when it comes time to contend! Get me Cliff Lee! Get me Dan Haren! You can’t tell me that they can’t be traded! The D-backs and the Tribe are pretty much already out of it! There are also rumors that the Cubs are considering waiving Zambrano or at least seeing what offers they’d get for him. Don’t give me garbage like Marquis or Wang! I’d rather go with what we have!

I’d still take Wang, but the rest of those pitchers aren’t worth what we’d have to give up.

I would take Wang, he is in need of an environment change

0-6 with an ERA of almost 12 doesn’t do anything for me! Though CBP even may be a tad more friendly than the batting cage that is the new Yankees Stadium.

I really wouldn’t give my daughters bike for any of the other pitchers mentioned

The addition of a #3 starter isn’t going to make us a dominating repeat World Series Champion. The time is NOW, we need to part with some young talent and go after a game changer.

Wang does not need a change of scenery. He wants to do well, just does not have his sink anymore. His down fall was playing the Mets.(broken ankle rounding third)

baseballfan…the injury to Wang was while rounding third against he Astros, and i believe it was lis-franc?
Wang, stinks. Penny wouldn’t be bad.
Haren isn’t going anywhere.
Lee, kings ransome..
What happened to the Halladay rumors? Haha, they sure disappeared quickly..

Washburn is having a pretty good year. 3.22 ERA is nice, but he’s barely lasting over 6 innings a game. I think he would help but I wouldn’t give up much for him.
Wang has given up 56 hits in 31 innings. No thanks!
Meche is a nice option

They’ll go the “joe blanton” route on the SP – mid pitcher on a half ass team – think Jason Marquis at most
Someone with not great numbers who won’t cost much
I hate giving up on these prospects – they’re soooo valuable

No, they clearly said theyre looking to replace Brett Myers. So think someone as good as Brett Myers. And really, none of these guys theyre scouting are as good as Brett Myers. I also think they may resign Brett Myers in the offseason.

Geoff thats not true. Replacing Brett means getting another pitcher. They would like them to be as good ,but these pitchers are the ones available. What game changer is on the block right now? Even the names mentioned are hurt or being dangled for rediculous returns. I agree these guys do not do anything for the Phillies ,but I just do not think they can do better. Washburn and Marquis I can see. Wang has no sink anymore and is up in the zone. Penny is a backend guy getting wins on the Sox.

Please tell me I am not reading people truthfully would give Chien-Ming Wang a chance as anything except maybe a water boy. in 7 starts this season only once did he give up less than 8 runs, and that was against a depleted Mutts lineup. He is without a doubt one of the WORST pitchers in MLB. He is horrible. Even Rollins could get more than 1 hit against him right now.

I don’t think Wang would be bad if we could get him on the cheap and do a little recovery program with him to see if we get some good results. However I view that purely as a program, hopefully in the minors, and not the solution to our pitching needs.
I would LOVE Halladay but it seems that Toronto is adamant about not trading him. Cleveland, at least, is thinking about Lee. We should cheer for everyone going up against Cleveland to see if we can get them to make a move and trade him for a fair price.

The Indians are rumoured to be not wanting to part with Lee who isn’t making a horrendous amount in the last couple of years of his deal, the reason for them to sell is to cut payroll and they don’t need to do that with him. If Lee becomes available then everyone will be on him, so get used to the idea of a dogfight that’s probably not going to happen during this year.
Anyone that say Dan Haren’s just being silly, the D-Backs locked him up and yes their looking to cut payroll but only expendable players like Doug Davis and Felipe Lopez.

Haren and Upton are the future of the D-Backs…Haren is not available, but Webb is I bet. When does he come off the DL?

Rumors suggest Webb’s year could be over, he’s getting an MRI tomorrow… He has a $8.5MM club option with a $500K+ buyout so it’s possible considering the relationship he’ll be a free agent in the off-season having missed an entire season… Tough call

The phils should be bargain hunting. They should look to pick up the cheapest option that will improve the 5 spot. I can’t see selling off a ton of talent on what’s out there. I’d love to see them bring in an upper-tier guy, and Cliff Lee obviously would appear worth his weight in prospects. But I don’t see them being able to afford him or anyone else decent. The bulk of their problems thus far (especially of late) have stemmed from a lack of offense and a poor bullpen. Overspending for a mediocre starter doesn’t solve either of those problems. Frankly, I cringe at the idea of Bastardo being moved to the bullpen.

I’d love to see Cliff Lee, but the Indians seem to think they’ll be contenders next year and don’t want to move him except for a ton. If the price is Drabek I’m out. I think what we have to hope for right now is that Carrassco comes through for us. If that happens we can focus on picking up a reliever or two.

Meche has come up on the last few threads I do not know that much about him, is he a real number two guy or more of a 2/3 or 3/4 guy. What kind of stuff does he have. I do not think we should trade any prospects for a rental guy, if we can not get the rest of this year and all of next if not 2 more years I would keep the kids in the minors

Meche still has 2 or 3 years left on his deal…
he’s a good pitcher but gets little exposure playing for the royals..

Remember Wang won 19 games back to back and was 8-2 before going down hurt last year. He may be healthy enough to make his starts right now but he’s clearly not healthy enough to return to form. If he could be acquired cheap there’s no reason to think he couldn’t return to form down the line, it’s a risk and not an immediate help but could be a low risk high result deal. That said it’s not out of the question to think he may be a non-tender candidate for the Yanks.
The Indians don’t need to trade Lee, his value is still likely to be very high this time next year so the Indians will ask for the moon and sit on him until they find a deal they like.
I think our best hope is for Cincinnati fall out of contention fast.

If the Phils pick up Wang, I might injure myself. I’m pretty sure his ERA was close to 40 (!?!?) earlier this season…

Meche signed a 4 year deal with the Royals and he’s in year 3.
Meche or Harang (talent vs cost and contract) seem the best two names but I suspect harder deals to make than we’d think.

Whats the hate with Wang? The guy was hurt. His numbers show he’s getting his groundball numbers back but he’s not conditioned yet because the Yanks don’t want on anyone. Right now the they have a surplus of starting pitching and Wang is poachable, he’s a career 54-20 going into the year. If the Phils or any other team gives him the time to get game healthy there’s no reason to think he can’t return to form.

Can’t believe that the Cardinals got Derosa for what amounts to nothing… all indications were that he was going to command a ton on the trade market.
Meche… will miss Thursday’s start with shoulder fatigue. Next infatuation?
Cliff Lee, Oswalt, Bedard, Harang (maybe…) or Duke (if they’re willing to part ways, I’m willing to give him and his 3.08 ERA a shot).

The REDS were said to be looking to add a bat… which means that they will be BUYERS at the deadline… so I doibt Harang is going anywhere.
The WhiteSox are said to be shopping Closer Bobby Jenks … which would make them SELLERS … so maybe Buerhle would be available ? His name was out there earlier
Cliff Lee is super-nasty.. I want him over any other pitcher

Chuck Chris Perez considered to have a lot of value (early Ryan Madson) plus the PTBNL and this is being spoken of as a good deal for both sides.
Looks like Bedard’s only going to command tybe B status as a FA. Oswalt just isn’t going to happen.

Think considering he’d be a rental Contreras could be a solid move. Looks like it’ll be a couple more weeks before we really know who’s likely to be moving.

I don’t see a problem with Wang he’s just a little injured thats all if his price was low i’d go for it the guy is a groundball pitcher and if he was healthy and his pitches started to sink i think hes right back to winning 19games a year like he did 2x’s in a row already.

I don’t quite understand the notion that just because a team is far back in the division they would make their impact players available. If they Phillies were 10-15 out I doubt they would make Hamels or Utley available.

I am not sure about Wang, Like I stated before win loss for a pitcher is over rated, I live around a bunch of yankee fans, and if I remember correctly, I am pretty sure he won more than a few games 9-6 10-5 last year, I may be wrong but I was never impressed with him, just like Dice-K for the Sox, won a lot of games last year but his run support was like 7 so I would stay away from Wang.
Am I repeating myself if I say no rentals for prospects, unless it is something Kendrick or someone who is not going to be any good. Only trade true prospects for a pitcher you can keep for one if not two more years.

Temple good teams don’t but teams that are trying to cut payroll, and get core of young kids for a future they do not have do. If the Phillies were out of it, and say they did not have Drebek and a few others in their system, and some one offered them a posible future ace, and a future big bat, and Hamels was owed like 30 million next year, they would move him.
But the Phillies core is here for two three more years and they have a strong farm so they would not move those guys

beta sigma shag, Temple is merely being realistic with his statement. Regardless of whether the team is considered good or mediocre, rarely do the front office give up a franchise player for prospects or the added motive of cutting costs. Hypothetically, Hamels would never be traded even if the Phillies didn’t have a star-cladded team and were out of the race on day one. Pitching is such a premium and having a franchise pitcher is an ideal situation where the team can be built around one.
No team is without a certain number of bonafide prospects in their farm system. Obviously, certain teams have a greater wealth of prospects. However, it is not a permanent situation as it runs in cycles depending on order of future draft selection and affordability.

Teams do look to see what they can get for their franchise players when they don’t expect to be able to re-sign them since they can almost hand-pick prospects from a number of suitors a la Johan Santana, Teixera (Texas to Atlanta).
If down the road the Phils are not expecting to have Cole past that current deal they will trade him if they don’t feel their likely to win, or that the return justifies the trade. Lets just hope that wont be the situation and this team has prospects who look capable of playing major roles and extending a window that would justify extending free agents Howard, Utley, Rollins etc.

I was refering to an earlier post when Dan Haren was mentioned. He’s controlled for the next couple of years so I doubt, no matter how far Arizona drops, he would be made available. If he was a free agent after the season, then I agree he would be on the block.

Haren’s signed through 2012 a month before he turns 32, he’ll only become available if and when the D-Backs feel they aren’t in a position to win except their built to be better when he starts to really get into the business end of that contract so barring a complete meltdown of guys like Upton, Reynolds, Scherzer etc. he’s not going to be even spoken about as available until 2011.
Different situation with Webb though, if he was healthy he would be poachable right now since it’s unlikely he’ll return to the D-Backs next year and their not in a position to win this year.

Obviously no one here is familiar with the concept of “buying low”.
Chen Ming Wang is at the lowest price you’ll ever get for a pitcher of his caliber (mid 90s sinkerballer)
Of course, you could pick up an older and slower Derek Lowe or Aaron Cook for 3 times the price.

like Dr. baseball says.
some stupid phillies fan want high price pitcher.
which one is more risky?
buying high like Dan Haren and Cliff Lee or buying low like chien-ming wang?
which one get better return? just like stock market- buy low n sell high.
Wang will get u high return when he is totally in form
