Travis has a good point about the trade. I think Spilborghs would be good here, he’s a great pinch hitter, and Marquis has been outstanding this year and would fit in great in the rotation. They need to hold on to Carrasco though. I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved Bastardo, because I don’t think he’s going to keep up this success.

Anybody think maybe they knew Lidge would need put on DL, but had him “pitch through it” until Romero was back and ready to contribute? Plus, with Park going 3 innings the other night and doing a great job, provides flexibility and allows them to go with one less guy in the bullpen

You’re right… that’s a very logical explanation, Dipsy. It makes a lot of sense when you consider how well Ruiz has been hitting. They don’t really wanna take the bat out of his hands right now and they would certainly rather have him behind the plate but they still want to give Coste some opportunities… bring in a 3rd insurance catcher and Coste becomes your primary RH bat.

Well, for some unknown reason, the Marlins were reported to have some interest in Coste. Hey, the guy can hit and he plays the position of catcher. The only reason I can POSSIBLY think of fpr making this move is that they might wanna use Coste earlier in the game as a righty pinch hitter without having to put him in the game defensively. By way of illustration, Coste comes in to try and knock in a big run in the six or seventh and then he leaves the game. Ruiz gets hurt the next inning. Who catches. I guess they feel that Coste is their best righty bat off the bench. Which is a sad statement in itself

Another interesting development… off-topic but with far more national implications…

NBC and the NHL has apparently blocked “Joe-Vision” for tonight’s Stanley Cup game. Joe Vision is the remote viewing at Joe Frazier Arena in Detroit where fans gather inside the arena to watch the game. A source says that it is because the event results in a negative impact on NBC’s ratings. Can you imagine if this catches on? It’s really senseless, to me.

Cmon Dipper….lol….Coste would be betting traded, not Bako. I’ll give in to ya Chase. Romero does have some problems with righties. Well then the eighth could look like this: Romero, Condrey, Eyre if you have to go L/R/L. Yuk. Or let Mad Dog come in and take the last hitter in the eighth if he’s a righty. Or even last two hiiters. Imagine: a 1 2/3 inning save from the closer. Nah…thats too absurd. They did stuff like that in the old days, though.

Wow… a lot of interesting developments here.

I guess that Lidge’s knee is worse than we thought. Either that or they want to give him some time to exercise his demons…

I like Spillborghs… not Marquis and not for Donald/Kendrick and Carrasco.

This all smells really fishy to me… Bako?? According to B/R, he bats lefthanded… why not Marson or Mayberry? Why not an extra bullpen guy?

Guys I posted this as a comment on the other thread earlier and it said it is awaiting moderation? Why do you think it said that?

The really true advantage that no one seems to talk about with the Phillies over the Mets is the fact that most of the core Phillie’s players came from the farm and were not just signed as FA. When you are a big name free agent like Delgado, Beltran, Santana, K-Rod, etc. You have to try to fit in and live up to the pressures of a FA contract and I just don’t think the chemistry is the same as when you kind of grow up together like the Phillies have.

Justin, you may very well be right about that. However, it’s odd that the team would call up another lefthanded bat who has not hit higher than .217 the past 3 years as a part time player. I suspect it’s Bako who will come off the bench to spell Ruiz and Coste occasionally. Or as one poster suggested, a possible trade brewing involving Bako?

Ahh..h, the wheels are turning.

an average of .400 an OBP of .500
no strikeouts.

while lefties are hitting .200 with 1 hit 1 walk and 2 K’s

and if that doesnt do it…

in 2008
righties hit .282 with 27 walks.
lefites hit .102 with 11 walks.

again,

Dominic Brown, the Phils top position prospect and basically top prospect, is going to be out 3-4 weeks after “slightly” fracturing his fifth finger on his right hand yesterday after being hit with a pitch.
