Phillies Select OF Kelly Dugan With 75th Pick

The Phillies selected high schooler Kelly Dugan with the 75th pick in the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft.
Here’s what Baseball America had to say about Dugan:
Switch-hitting first baseman Kelly Dugan has some power now in his 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame and projects to hit for more down the line, though he likely will wind up doing that at Pepperdine. He’s a solid runner at around 7.1 seconds over 60 yards and has decent arm strength, so he could give the outfield a try. He’s the son of actor/director/producer Dennis Dugan, who has worked frequently with Adam Sandler for years.
The Phillies drafted him as an outfielder. That they were able to throw in the line about his father’s work says a lot about the confidence behind this player.

Wouldnt it be great if teams were able to trade picks if they choose i think that would make the draft more entertaining

I don’t like the idea of trading picks. Say for example the Yankmees offer $50 mill to the Nuts in exchange for the number 1 pick and the Nuts pocket the cash.

—Hes a high school 1B, apparently. Switch hitter. Dunno why they list him as a CF. not sure what kinda power he has. next pick needs to be a power arm.

“Kelly Dugan, a Pepperdine signee, is Notre Dame’s top player. Tall, lanky and projectable at 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Dugan has a sweet lefthanded swing and is a silky smooth first baseman.
The son of actor, director and producer Dennis Dugan, Kelly will not need a stunt man or body double on a baseball field. Home runs flew out of the tiny El Dorado yard in this game, with Kelly Dugan poking two opposite field home runs.
No one should alter his swing, but Dugan may benefit from lower, more relaxed hands. In addition, Dugan initiates his load mechanism too late, often forcing him to flick at the ball as it is nearly past him. He’ll probably windup in college after the June draft, but there is little doubt that Dugan has the ability to be a top draftee in 2012″

Looks like they went over slot, risking not being able to sign someone to get the better talent. Id pay way over slot to get him to come to camp. You dont find swtich-hitting 1B who have power and play good defense often.

Drafting 2 players as CFs interesting since they drafted 2 ofs last yr in gose and collier very high, then hewitt if he doesnt end up playin 3rd for the team future.

Zolecki reports on phillies.com that signability doesnt aplear to be a problem as the Phils hosted Dugan and his family at CBP last weekend. Phils appeared confident from meeting with him if they chose him theyd be able to sign him.

Well..with a 75th pick for a kid named Dugan and whose father is better known and gets more write up, I’m not going to jump up and down with excitement (laughter).
Will have a better idea 3 or 4 years from now if it’s a worthy selection.

With the 75th pick, the Phillies selected a guy ranked 236th on one draft list and in the 220s on most other lists.
Their second pick was even worse-a reach of a pick who may play football and doesn’t even like baseball.
I have heard nothing about these guys being “overslot”. These seem to be reaches and signability picks rather than splashing some cash for some overslot guys that fell to them.

His dad directed Happy Gilmore… Happy… gotta like the pick. The draft is a crap shoot anyway. Let’s draft the guys that have rich/influential parents! Maybe they’ll make a Sandler movie about the Phillies.
Dugan – great looking swing. Wonder if there were any video enhancements to make his bat speed look a little faster…. hmmm…. kidding. Truth be told, I like the pick. He’s big (you can’t teach that) and strong with a very good swing (nice bat speed).
The other guy (Hudson) is a reach… I don’t really like the pick at all but it is what it is. He’s an athlete and a decent prospect but he doesn’t even like baseball… I don’t like players that are only motivated by money. You gotta have guys that have a desire to be the best, otherwise, they’ll only work hard enough to make a buck.
