A Look Ahead: Home Sweet Home

After a roller coaster ride of a week in which the Phillies finished by sweeping the New York Mets, the Phils welcome the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates to town to wrap up the first half of the 2009 season. The Phillies will be looking to add to their division lead, which currently stands at one game over the Florida Marlins. The Reds and Pirates however will be looking to claw their way back into the pennant race as they head into the All- Star break.
The Phillies enter the week at 42- 37 having gone an even 5 – 5 in their last ten games. Their current winning streak stands at three games thanks to a weekend sweep of the Mets. The Reds enter the week with a .500 record, sitting in fourth place in the Central division. They have played well as of late taking six out of their last ten. Pittsburgh starts the week last place in the Central, and have won only four out of their last ten. A bad week for the Pirates and the Zach Duke trade rumors will begin as the Pirates will hold their yearly trade deadline fire sale.
The Phillies will also be looking to improve upon their home record in which they currently stand at six games below .500.
The Reds will be throwing out a string of right handed pitchers for their four game series with the Phils. Coming into the week the pitching staff has been hot for Cincinnati with the exception of Bronson Arroyo whom the Phillies do not face. Both Micha Owings and Aaron Harang have been good going into the week. Also, look for Charlie Manuel to start left handed hitters Greg Dobbs and Matt Stairs in the outfield over right handed hitter John Mayberry Jr.
The Phillies will counter the Reds Johnny Cueto with Cole Hamels starting the series. The Phillies will also hand the ball over to pitcher Rodrigo Lopez for his second start this season. Both Hamels and J. A. Happ will see two more starts each before the All Star break. Hamels will look to rebound from back to back poor starts while Happ will try to keep doing what he’s been doing, pitching solid games. Happ has been good and may be the Phillies best starter. He comes into the week with a 2.96 earned run average and a 1.23 WHIP. Pirates ace Zach Duke will represent the first left handed starter the Phillies see this week on Friday.
Jimmy Rollins who had a monster series against the Mets may have finally found his groove and when Rollins is hot, the Phillies line up usually follows. Raul Ibanez has yet to start his rehab assignment and the Phils must continue to pick up the slack. The shot of life provided by Rollins has helped but more production from Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth will be crucial if the Phillies are to continue to make this a successful home stand. Pedro Feliz also comes into the week on a hot streak having batted .400 last week.
The Phillies head into the Mid- Summer Classic playing two bad teams. If they continue to get quality starts out of their rotation, this week should be a cake walk. However, if the Phils take these two teams lightly(which they sometimes do against bad teams) they will have limited success. Anything less than 4-2 this week will be a failure. The Phillies need to take care of business against bad teams. To not win both series this week would be unacceptable and make for a long mid season break.

A couple of things… Buck/McCarver are the worst. Fox should be ashamed for
Jamie Moyer is leading the team in wins. Further, over his last 9 games he has averaged 6.01 ip and 2.78 ER per start… old man can still get it done and everyone who decided to label him the worst pitcher of all time in early May should take a deep dive in a shallow pool. I said this before… I would imagine that when you have pitched as long as he has, your body getst accustomed to a very certain timeline… I truly believe that his body never quite adjusted to the short offseason but now that a month and a half has passed, we’re seeing the pitcher that helped us win a WC in ’08.
J-Roll looked good but it’s still too early to claim that he has turned the corner… he has to continue to take it one at bat at a time. It is really nice to see him get it going at home versus the Mets… hopefully, that means that when the pressure is on in September, we’ll have J-Roll and not J-Slump. In my opinion, regardless of what he gives us at the plate, he’s worth every start for what he gives us on defense. Utley/Rollins to Howard… the best double play combination in history…

Buck is a disgrace. McCarver is the typical national guy that doesnt study teams other than NY or BOS for more than 5 minutes. The Fox team is SO bad that I think the Sunday Night baseball team of those three idiots is actually better. THATS how bad I think the Fox team is. Im glad I was at the game on Sat. Joe Morgan and Steve Phillips are gurus compared to MCCarver. And whoever the play by play guy on SNB is is 5 times better than Joe Buck.
Still, the TBS team is better than that and they make you yearn to hear our own local broadcast teams again. The One exception being Tony Gwynn is a very good broadcaster on TBS.

and SHAME on those pitchers this weekend for San Diego for NOT at least buzzing the tower on Manny. They should have hit him right off the bat. If I was Chad Gaudin there, Im blasting on in his ribs or at his head or at his knees. Im GLADLY getting kicked out or fined or suspended for that.
Back in the day if a guy came back from getting caught cheating like that he would be drilled no questions asked right off the bat.

The Fox broadcast on the 4th was basically “The Manny Show”, and you couldn’t just MUTE because they had him on split screen, it was so annoying I had to stop watching for a while.

Fox broadcasts are the worst, they show no responsibility to cover their games with any caring of the legacy of this sport and are most interested with turning headlines into discussion than actually debating the game their covering. Then again what do you expect from a network who promote Ken Rosenthal as a legitimate source of baseball knowledge. Disgraceful network.
Chuck P- really nice to hear good things said about Moyer, the guy deserve so much more respect than he’s given and is the pitcher I believe is most responsible for kicking the rotation into shape in spite of the issues.

Im willing to bet that the Dodgers – while they stilll may win their division – will not be representing the NL in the World Series. Whether its the Phillies or someone else (Milwaukee maybe), that Dodger team is going down. I would LOVE to see that team fall apart and meltdown and miss the playoffs now that King d-bag is back in LA.

^On the Manny issue it’s just disgraceful how the baseball worlds giving Manny a pass for ‘being Manny’. I’m not a fan of Bonds and Clemens but these guys have had their careers tarnished by ‘suspected’ performance enchanting substances use, Manny gets caught and frankly couldn’t care less showing the opposite of remorse. He didn’t humble himself to the fans and apologise for a great player bringing shame on the sport and show any caring of the history of the game. The guys been given a free pass and the networks glorify his return as if his suspension served no purpose. It’s just disgraceful and so typical of the foxesque MTV generation as we are continually having people who have no right to be role models shovelled down our throats.
Would be different if Manny was remorseful, even if it was insincere but how you can shun Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds drive Mark Magwire into obscurity and hang the PED sign over Sammy Sosa AND THEN hold Manny up as a role model again is just reprehensible.

Bonds tested positive for “The Clear,” so there is no “alleged” with him.

Bonds admitted to using the clear (citing stupidity… claiming he was unaware as to whether the clear was actually a performance enhancing substance) but, to date, there has never been a positive Bonds’ test released to the public. The Feds have claimed that they have one… in the end, they don’t have anything without trainer, Greg Anderson.
It’s unfair that Manny’s getting a free pass… and you’re right, the fact that he has been so insincere about it and laughably nonchalant with his apologies and explanations should repulse every baseball fan. Manny being Manny is a cheap excuse.

Bottom line….season is NOT over, not by a longshot….Nats are out of it unless Mets/Phillies/Braves and Marlins SIMULTANIOUSLY end up in an airplane crash together. However scrap that scenerio…Mets and Phils as they have been floundering during the first half, let the Braves and Marlins back into this.Mets are riddled with injuries and eventually the disabled list is going to get shorter and shorter and washed up players thrown into the tundra,Braves have experience on their side and Bobby Cox,Marlins are a group of young kids who are hungry and TRUST me,the team that will break your heart, also YES the Phillies had JC out,Lidge on the DL and a hot batter in Ibanez out and yet lead the damn thing by a slim game.So the NL East is NOT going to be handed to ANYONE on a silver platter, and are not annointed the Championship like most of youse guys think,it is earned.Still one more half of baseball season left and 4 games separating 4 teams. LET THE DOGFIGHT BEGIN!

Screw Manny. That guy is not worth the breath you would expend to talk about him. Lets talk Phils. While I am happy that the staff is coming around I gotta say that there is a John Mayberry situation brewing. As Jason pointed out, the Phils are gonna face a lot of righties so presumably Mayberry will not be starting anytime soon. Dobbs is more effective in left right now so Mayberry’s gonna sit the bench and the last couple weeks have shown that pinch hitting is not his forte, that homer notwithstanding. I think the Phils should send him down. He’s gotta play. Its not fair to ask him to be a pinch hitter. Who takes his place? I don’t know. How about anyone else that can hit .220?

Mr. Bintliff, why would you described the Reds as a “bad” team and a “cakewalk” for the Phillies?
The Reds, under new ownership, gradually upgraded the roster with young talented players the past few years. With Bruce, Votto and Phillips adding an impressive power production and combined that with stellar pitching of Cueto, Arroyo, Harang and Owings. Plus add a closer like Cordero (20 saves;.80 ERA) and one can understand the preseason buzz of this team making a impact among contenders. True, like other contenders, they had struggles for a number of reasons including the lengthy absence of Votto and his anxiety disorder problem. Votto is back in the lineup and yes, the Phillies better NOT take this team “likely”.

Oops..should read 1.80 ERA for Cordero.

It’s definitely not fair to say pinch-hitting isn’t Mayberry’s forte. First of all, it’s too early to tell. Secondly, he’s 2 for 7 as a pinch-hitter, meaning he has a much higher average as pinch-hitter than he does as part of the starting line-up (.286 vs. .209). In fact, he has only 9 hits on the season, so pinch hits account for 22 percent of his total.
Like I said, numbers like these don’t mean much. But I’ll be shocked if the Phillies give up a right-handed power bat before sending down Bako.

Without Volquez, the Reds are capable of winning a few games but not a contender… with him, that team is filthy.

Bako scored two runs on saturday, and charlie keeps on the team for another left handed bat, so spell Ruiz, not that I agree with it but that is why he is one the team. Charlie likes as a RH pinch hitter for some reason, and likes to have another catcher.
Hamels has to pitch better tonight, and if we can keep up the starting pitching we have had in the last 4 games the Phillies should be able to win 5 or 6 of the next seven leading into the break. All the starters have had good outings except Hamels in the last two weeks.

So true, Beta… with the exception of Hamels, this rotation has performed very well under fire and while I would prefer 4 out of 5 pitchers hitting on all cylinders RIGHT NOW, we aren’t going to win this division without a healthy and effective Hamels. I would like to see him put together a solid outing… 6 innings, 2 ER, 5-6 K. He doesn’t have to be dominant but he has to find his command. Admittedly, he’s in a funk… that’s no excuse. Can’t get caught feeling sorry for himself…

Great point, Papa… I actually like Mayberry as a pinch hitter. REGARDLESS, 22 at bats is not enough of a sample size to make any determinations of what type of player he may or may not be.
Damn front runners…

It will be nice to see what Lopez has in his next start, I believe it will be against the Reds, JB is the only one who won’t pitch in that four game series, I think, would Like to Moyer against Pirates, but I think it will JB Hamels, and JA in that 3 game series against the Pirates.
On Mayberry, IMO sitting the bench in the bigs, and PH and spot starting is ok for the guy, I may be wrong, but I do not think the experience will hurt his development. I know a lot of you will disagree, but I do not think it is the worse thing for a young kid to play twice a week and PH two other times that week. I hope Raul sits out the All Star Game and is rested and ready for FLA, cause as it sits right now that trip to Florida will be a big series coming out of the all star break

I guess, to try to expand on my point a bit more, its not fair to ask Mayberry to come off the bench cold and be expected to deliver pinch hits when he hasn’t had enough time to show whether he can hit major league pitching on a consistent basis. I think the Phillies are unintentionally placing him in a position to fail because they have no other righty bat to put in there. I’m rootin for the kid though make no mistake about it. Hopefully in three weeks he won’t be occupying the same role.

Bruce…
The Reds are not a terrible team. They do show a bit of promise and are still in contention for the playoffs. However, the Phillies are a superior team and if their staring pitching gives them good outings like last week, I still think the series with the Reds should be a cake walk. As opposed to the Phillies I think they are a bad team, but I will agree that since the new ownership took over, they are a team on the rise.
p.s., also meant to say lightly, not likely. My bad for the spelling error!

Yea I get your point Dipsy I just do not agree with it, that is all, you have a point but I just philosophically, am not on board with it effected him, I believe that just being around these guys and getting into a major league routine can help some of these kids out that is all.
