If the Angels include Jered Weaver (doubtful) then I don’t think we’ll be able to match that.

Drabek is not without health questions and some prospect analysts think his future may be as a closer.Taylor is tearing it up in AA, there are still questions about his power once he reaches the major leagues.Roy Halladay is proven.

I just think that getting Halladay is worth it, especially since Halladay is arguably more valuable to the Phillies than any of the other contenders.

I’d see the attitude as the Jays can have guys that can help them now in bulk or guys that have a higher upside down the road, by all means work on a deal in the middle-ground which is where I’m sure both parties are at but not both. I want to know what teams like the Angels are willing to offer because bidding against ourselves were going to loose every time.

In the long run Marson MAY be better….but…..I think Ruiz is a very good catcher and has proven to be offensively good as well (although he has struggled as of late). I just think that if the Jays were to say no deal unless Marson was included then I think you have to part with him. But you already said that. Also, putting Marson in the deal depends on who else is in it as well. It’s that “not wanting to give up the entire farm” thing again.

Chuck, I think Marson will be a little better than Ruiz. The reluctance to trade Marson shouldn’t preclude getting Halladay. I’d rather put someone else in the deal as the 5th prospect. If the Jays demand Marson or no deal, then I’d part with Marson.

After the initial frenzy as passed I think everyone now is much calmer and realizes the folly in trading away 2 or 3 of those top 3 prospects we have. I mean, 2 of those guys will be on the Phillies in 2 years. One of them may still be blocked. You can afford to deal one (Brown) and thats about it – along with the lesser prosects like Carrasco/Donald, and the filler.

Griffin…I hear you on the Marson thing….but I’m not sure if he’s not expendable at this point in a trade. Wouldn’t Chooch be the catcher for the next 2 years?

Yeah Griffin….the O’s completely got the best of that deal. Sherrill is a stud in the 9th inning and Adam Jones is going to be an incredible long-term player.

I have to agree….the chances of landing Halladay are much less than 50%…not sure if the 20% Peter Gammons threw out there is accurate….but the point is that it has more of a chance of NOT happening than happening. Amaro has to stay in control of this and not give up the farm. I’m confident that he will take the right approach.. Also, I ve said this repeatedly…..we can’t trade Happ AND Drabek….one or the other, Drabek being my preference for going. (Happ is too proven at the major league level to be traded now.) That’s just me….maybe I’m completely wrong with my thinking.

Personally I think Riccardi’s playing a clever game knowing he doesn’t need to trade Halladay and has two more conventional windows of opportunity to get a deal done. I think he’s being floated to swell his value so that the Jays can get what they want when a deal is revisited down the road.

I can see a deal with a much as say Donald, Carrasco and Taylor plus minor prospects but I think any more an a deal fizzles until talks resume in the off-season. Just my personal opinion.

Yeah, I’d love to get him, but if a package of Drabek, Brown or Taylor, Donald and Marson doesn’t get it done, then it’s starting to become silly.

Also, I’d like the Phillies to keep Marson (who is hot of late) because I think he’ll be the Phillies starting catcher next season.

Also, when the Mariners traded for Erik Bedard, they gave up a top prospect in Adam Jones, a major league ready power arm in George Sherril and a bunch of good, not great, prospects. One of them turned out to be Chris Tillman and now that trade is an easy win for the Orioles.

Peter Gammons reported yesterday that he thinks there is a 20% chance that Halladay will get traded. So if the Phils offer an underwhelming package, the Jays will just keep Halladay.

Griffin looking at the Haren deal the D-Backs also got a pitching prospect going there way in the deal, of course that might something that happens here but I can’t see the Phils offering a tremendous amount past what the Mets offered for Johan (remember those prospects were thought of highly at the time) and I think comments like Keith Law and Peter Gammon’s reaffirms the idea he’s not going to get traded.

In the Dan Haren trade, the D-backs gave up Carlos Gonzalez (who was a TOP prospect), Brett Anderson (a TOP pitching prospect) two solid prospects in Aaron Cunningham and Chris Carter and two major league ready pitchers in Dana Eveland and Greg Smith.

Haren was under contract for longer than Halladay, but at the time was nowhere near as proven as Halladay is now.

Keith Law (who used to work for Ricciardi in Toronto) said in a chat on Thursday that Drabek, Brown or Taylor, Donald and Marson wouldn’t be enough. I was surprised, but I think we’ve all been jaded by the Johan Santana fleecing of the Twins trade.

If the Phils were offering two major league ready prospects plus two elite prospects plus further prospects Halladay would have been traded here a week ago, no-ones going to be offering that much in a package. It’ll either be headed by major league ready prospects or elite prospects or one of both but not the whole gang, it’s miles more than anyone has paid for a pitcher with Halladays contract situation.

If the Jays won’t budge for Drabek, Taylor, Donald, Marson and Carpenter I’d walk away and look for another #2 or #3. We’re in a perfect position right now. 3 games up with 4 games in hand allows us to be patient and see what other teams become sellers.

Not that I’d do it, but wouldn’t the Indians take Drabek, Taylor, Donald, Marson for Lee?

Whats been rumoured is that the Jays are looking for two near major league ready and two good prospects, it’s going to be hard to believe the Jays will be able to prize both Donald and a one of our 3 top prospects and still be able to get much more in the deal. Amaro’s not stupid and he’s not going to offer the world past what a team like the Angels will be offering. Remember the Jays don’t have to trade Halladay their just fielding offers and their not going to get the kind of offers being spoken of here because no-ones going to be offering that many established prospects into a deal and take on all that salary.

We need to be patient because the more I look at it, Drabek,Donald and Marson is a heck of start to a 5 prospect deal. I think the Jays would be nuts to turn down Drabek, Marson, Donald, Savory and Carpenter/Kendrick, but that’s just me.
