Amaro’s Top 10 As GM

When the Philadelphia Phillies named Ruben Amaro Jr. as their General Manager, I had my doubts. The Stanford graduate has proved me wrong and has made some terrific moves in the eight months he has be GM. The Lee trade was the icing on the cake.

Here are his top 10 moves since becoming the Phillies GM:

10 ) Acquired John Mayberry Jr. from Texas in exchange for Greg Golson.

Time will tell about this speed for power deal. Mayberry has minimal playing time, but Mayberry is more likely to put up the better offensive numbers in the future, while Golson tallies the steals.

9 ) Released So Taguchi.

Two days after becoming the GM, Amaro made his first move. Taguchi batted .220 and had a .580 OPS while with the World Champion Phillies in 2008. The Chicago Cubs signed Taguchi to a minor league contract, but hasn’t played in the majors since.

8 ) Signed Pedro Martinez.

Time will tell for this move, but it’s not a bad deal on paper. The Phillies get a former Cy Young winner, and cheaper than expected. It’s only one year, so it can’t hurt.

7 ) Avoided arbitration with Shane Victorino, Chad Durbin, Ryan Madson and Joe Blanton.

Amaro didn’t overpay any of them after each of them had a phenomenal 2008 season. Victorino: 1 year, $3.125M; Durbin: 1 year, $1.365; Madson: 3 year, $12 million; Blanton: 1 year, $1.475.

6 ) Released Adam Eaton.

This is self-explanatory.

5 ) Signed Ryan Howard to a 3-year deal.

Many believed Howard would go through arbitration every year, receiving more money each year until he reached free agency and offered Alex Rodriguez type money. This deal was a safe bet, eating out Howard’s arbitration years. The contract is $54 million.

4 ) Signed Chan Ho Park.

Park was signed to a one year $2.5 million contract. Park earned his way into the rotation, but struggled. However, since joining the bullpen, Park is 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA. Opponents are batting .222 against him.

3 ) Signed Cole Hamels to a three year deal.

The reigning NLCS and World Series MVP was signed cheap; only $20.5 million for the course of three years. Hamels is having an off year, but he is still the Phillies ace and has showed signs of rebounding.

2 ) Signed Raul Ibanez.

Pat Burrell who? Ibanez is batting .305 with 26 home runs and 74 RBI. He has a 1.009 on-base plus slugging percentage.

1 ) Traded Lou Marson, Jason Donald, Carlos Carrasco, and Jason Knapp to Cleveland Indians for Cliff Lee and Ben Francisco.

This is a steal. The Phillies get the reigning Cy Young winner, plus a much need right-handed bat. The best prospects, Kyle Drabek, Dominic Brown, Michael Taylor and J.A Happ were not part of the deal, which is huge for the club’s future.

Great article. RA a job well done. Now go get us The Doctor. Jays GM is backed against the wall. He’s currently on “over the bridge” watch. This is a once in a life time opp. RA at least give it onbe more. Here’s how the call would go. Ricc: Hello, RA: It’s Amaro from the Phillies, RA: Yeah?? RA: Are u ok their man. Sounds like you’ve been crying. Kinda like TO when the Cowboys cut’em. Ricc: No, no I’m ok. RA: Have u found a buyer for Halladay. Ricc: No(sigh). Well how about this: JA Happ, Drabek and either Taylor or Mayberry. Ricc: Really(screams like a school girl)!. RA: Yes I’ am dead serious. Ricc: Where do I sign? Ricc: Oh wait, I got to run this by my Sups 1st. Can I call u right back. RA: Two minutes and not a sec more. Ricc: I just got a great off from Philly for Doc. Jays: What? Who? Names…. Jays: Hell yeah. I would’ve gave them Doc for Moyer, Brunlett and Tyrone Hill(former Sixer).Call him back. Ricc: RA it’s a done deal and hangs up. RA: I am now king of Phillies Nation.

we aren’t getting Halladay lol, but it’d be great if we could trade Bruntlett and Bako for him ;)

I see what you’re saying Keith. But again, we got a whole lot less for Schilling. I know Schill was unhappy and it drove the price way down. But the Jays can be had. The reports on TorontoSun.com say Halladay was devastated when word of Lee became official. He is being very proff and is trying to hide that. Again their GM is still in shock that RA got Lee so fast. Jays will move Doc in the last hour. RA said “no comment” when asked if the Doc deal was now off. Probably just a PR ploy to make other GM deplete their farm to get him. But you never know. Lee gets us even with other top 1/2 punches. Doc makes us the dominate 1-2-3 in baseball.

okay let’s trade Bruntlett, Bako, Kendrick, Register, and maybe Lopez then. ;)

When a Jays beat writer asked Blue Jays Manager Cito Gaston “Now that the Phillies got Lee are u relieved that Doc will probably stay. Gaston: “I don’t know. Maybe they’ll come back and grab Doc too. Wouldn’t that be something to see.”

I like the way you think, Repeat! It won’t happen, but it’s a great thought!

4:23pm: Jack Curry of the New York Times has additional comments from Ricciardi on Halladay:

“We’ve got nothing going on. We expect him to be with us.”

The Phillies are out, and the other suitors failed to wow Ricciardi.

I know the chances are pratically non-existent. But until 4:01 7/31/09 I’m going to dream that RA will make the move/s of the last generation and bring Doc to Philly.

If that’s true, then why did the Jays have scouts watching D. Brown play yesterday?

Because they still had interest in trading with the Phillies and they already sent scouts out there, than they got word of the Cliff Lee deal?

In response to Repeat!’s comment about Halladay being shocked when he heard the news of the Lee trade, late last night (2am) watching MLBN, they showed alot of clips from Halladay’s game. In the dugout after he was pulled, he did look REALLY down, shaking his head, almost looked like he could cry, and I don’t think it was a reaction to his performance. I remember thinking, I wonder if he just heard about the trade, and he’s bummed. I really felt sorry for him.

haha, boxage, that would cause a multitude of explosions all over the place, it’s just too much for a Phila fan to handle.

Vic out of lineup tonight, francisco playing center, batting 6th, according to csn.

I think with Cliff Lee on the team, the Phillies are assured of a playoff spot barring something disastrous.

So adding Halladay would just be for a short playoff series in which fluky things can happen.

I love Halladay, but the fact that the Phils have kept their future intact and STILL landed another ace is good enough for me.

No need to trade away the future just to upgrade from Blanton to Halladay in a short series.

But Halladay is awesome, so maybe…

i think David Blaine is calling up Ruben Amaro after this trade and asking him how he performs a magic trick like that.

I also think Bernie Madoff is calling up Ruben asking him how he got so good at stealing.

Any way since Halladay is a dream now we can balance the rotation out with Bannister he is young cheap and under contract thru 2012 he might be a step above happ in the long run ant thoughts?

Yea, Raul has to be number one. The Lee deal we can see in like 2 years. When, Lee performed for us, and the prospects we gave up do not turn out to be good. It was good to lock up Howard ,but his average and averything have only gone down. Pedro is still a bum

Amanda, that’s a cheap shot at Pat. He’ll always be a Phillie and won’t be forgotten around our house.

That was fun wasn’t it. I feel like it’s “Chritmas in July.” Almost game time folks. Unfortunately I got Direct TV. So it’s old school for me. A radio and a beer and a computer. Enjoy the game!

    Lee will definitely by virture of league change and his stuff, do well for us to finish of the season but with following caveats;
as a fly ball pitcher his numbers at AL And NL hitter parks might make you wince..in particular Great American Ball Park which thankfully is in the rear view mirror. Until just last year, is numbers significantly suffered in the late months just about everyday. I haven’t had time to really look behind this but it did vastly improve and was definitely a the difference maker in his cy young year. I can’t help thinking that coming to our great clubhouse, being on a team that hits like the Indians use to, are play-off bound, sell out every night, reigning WS champs is just the right shot of adrenaline to ward of any fatigue for the rest of the year….
If any contender gets Halladay however and we have to face him its bad not just because he the league’s best pitcher but he comes bearing two fists of Phillies kyrptonite: the sinkerball (his is considered the most deadly and in colder weather its that much worse) and 3 off-speed pitches tooled for lefties and righties: a nasty cutter, curve ball and change-up….To most teams he’s a buzzsaw but to ours a woodchipper…remember derek lowe first game this year, Halladay sinker is more nasty than that. If for any reason to get him it just not to have to face him.

What’s probably going to stop Rublen from pulling off a Halladay deal now, even for lesser talent than previously offered, is that the Phils brass would not like to absorb both Lee & Halladay’s 2010 salaries and keep the key players on the team that are either arbitration eligible or free agents.
