It might just be me, but i’m thinking its a blatant mistake for the Phillies to show any interest in Pedro at all.

his last e.r.a. was over 5 and he was losing more than he was winning. Just showing interest shows terrible lack of faith in our starters, who have been inconsistent but have been heating up and took us all the way last year.
Get holliday or nobody and have faith. I know we’re built to win now, but don’t blow prospects just to appease the masses..

three prospects dealt for him seems like a steal.

chuck, happ has pitched well enough in all but 1? game to win. i wouldnt count on that type of reliability from the old red glove wearer. the addition of halladay would rock, but the thought of losing happ for pedro just made me puke a bit

Gavin… I like your starting point: Carrasco, Donald, Marson.

If we get Pedro but have to deal Happ as part of this, I might be ok with that (assuming that would allow us to keep Drabek/Knapp).

Hamels, Halladay, Blanton, Moyer, an aging Pedro Martinez

is ten-fold better than…

Hamels, Blanton, Moyer, Happ, Lopez/Carpenter/Carrasco/Bastardo…

Am I wrong or does Pedro go to the pen? Thats where he’s gonna end up. And so what, we only spent money for him. He’s gonna blow out the pen as a starter, a la Chan Ho Park, and then go to the pen. I love him there. He can just fire and maybe tickle 92 or 93 on the gun. And with the curve and change? Whats with all the hating?

jgqergn… what if, and this is a hypothetical, the deal involves a pitcher already on our staff??? What if the Jays want a pitcher that is going to help them still compete (since they’re not completely out of it)? Maybe, signing Pedro is the first step of the Halladay deal getting done…

Thanks Chuck P. Looks like our “crappy system” is the only one with the bullets to pull this off. Should be an intersting few weeks!

Funny that we have 4 guys in the top 50 and that doesnt include Carpenter – Carrasco – Donald – Marson – Mayberry – etc. The Phils have done a nice job.

One thing to think about thatin years past if the Phils had to give up 4 prospects for anyone, it literally meant they had tapped the system dry. Could the Phils farm absorb a 4 prospect loss in 2009? A whole lot better than they could in 99!!

Well the Phillies apparently signed Pedro. What a terrible move. I really hope this gets denied.

And Chuck, that trade from Colon only happened because Omar knew the team was being moved and he did not need any farm system anymore. He needed a pitcher and said they can pick any players regardless of how good they are. Those players were also still in A ball.

Ya know, I would dance a jig if the Phils could get Halladay for Marson, Donald, and Carrasco and leave Brown/Taylor out. While the Blue Jays might want more for Halladay, they might not be able to get more from any another team. I mean, these are still 3 blue chip prospects and more than what the Mets and Brewers gave up for Johan and Sabathia.

June 28, 2002: Omar Minaya, then Expos GM, traded three prospects for Bartolo Colon and Lee Stevens for the stretch run. Those prospects were Grady Sizemore, Cliff Lee and Brandon Phillips… the Expos didn’t make the playoffs (despite Colon pitching well), they were eventually moved out of Montreal, Minaya lost his job (and thankfully ended up with the Mets) and the Natinals are still struggling to produce a MLB worthy team… I think that we should… scratch that, NEED to… go out and get Halladay but only one of those 4 should be… scratch that, NEED to be… on the block. The Chi Sox don’t have any prospects in the top 50 (they do have Gordon Beckham)… the Red Sox only have one player in the top 50… the Cardinals have one prospect in the top 50. We have FOUR… and we have Carlos Carrasco/Jason Donald… we have leverage.

Legitimatly you can say Donald – Marson – Carrasco – Brown/Taylor – and any other player in the system besides Happ and Drabek. Maybe I’m delusional and an obvious homer, but good golly that seems like alot for anyone and the Jays would be unrealistic to ask for more than that. The only reason Donald and Marson arent in the upper eschalon this year is that one or both have been hurt.

Anyway, we’re all arguing against ourselves here for nothing, but that is a very fair deal and if it werent anyone but Halladay we’d be going crazy to get rid of just about any of those guys.

Are there any other teams that could be a trade partner for the Jays that have more guys in the top 25?

I think it is sooo crazy what the Mets gave up for Santana, what a joke of prospects and what Milwaukee gave up for Sabathia was just as bad. LaPorta dropped down to like the 28thspot in the top 50. These guys are just prospects, so please get me Roy halladay!!!

Apparently, the Blue Jays are set at OF. Its been said that they are, conveniently enough, looking for a major league ready catcher and 2B. You would think it goes unspoken they they would also want a pitcher.
