News, Posts
Jayson Werth has been named to the NL All-Star roster replacing New York Mets outfielder Carlos Beltran, who is on the DL. The Phillies now have five Phillies headed to St. Louis for the mid-summer classic: Chase Utley, Raul Ibanez, Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino and Werth.
It is the 13th time a team has sent three outfielders to the All Star Game. The last team being the 1995 Indians with Albert Belle, Kenny Lofton and Manny Ramirez.

wow, more than half our our starting lineup (vic, chase, howard, raul, werth) is in the all star game. Not to mention rollins was leading the starting shortstop for a time being and feliz and ruiz were in the top 5 for voting and the fact that charlie and the staff is coaching the NL. Phillies are the first team since the 1995 Indians to send three outfielders to the All-Star game. That year, Cleveland sent Manny Ramirez, Albert Belle and Kenny Lofton. Are #2-6 hitters are all ALL Stars this year. Not bad

He totally deserves it, though I’m sure plenty of people with disagree with that. Jayson has been underrated for a long time and it’s good to see him getting some recognition. I’m sure the 20 HR’s helped, lol. Good for him!

He made it based on his performance of the past week. It makes sense. But I am surprised that Kemp has been looked over so far.

Do you guys know how lucky we are as fans. I know we have Utley howard Rollins. Just think of this our outfield three all-stars Ibanez Vic Werth. How many teams would love that. To have any of those three on there team. They play with heart. They all can hit. There smart and can field. Vic and Werth are tremondous fielders. We just are very very lucky to have such talent and get to enjoy it everyday. I know there are days were we kill them but we are just being idiot fans. Am I right. I will be the first to kill them because I just like to hear myself being in idiot.

Phillies now have 4 guys with 20 or more HRs. Which means it’s possible they could have 4 guys with 40 more more HRs by the end of the season. Not sure the last time a team accomplished that.

IMO Howard will be the only one to end up with 40.

How does this affect you…
Scott Lauber according to his twitter page (https://twitter.com/ScottLauber) is saying that the Phils designated Chris Coste for assignment to make room for Raul Ibanez and has been claimed by the Astros.

This is great but I hope Sandoval makes it too. It would be a shame for the only offensive threat on that whole team to get shafted. He is having a great year.

Very nice! All Star outfield. When this team is clicking on all cylinders they are next to impossible to the stop. i.e 22 runs against the reds in the first game of the series. True this team is mighty streaky, but when they are hot, they are HOT. I also liked the comment about Werth last night on ESPN. Something along the lines of Jayson Werth is hotter than a fox in a barn on fire or something like that. I should have written it down.

Why on gods green earth would we get rid of Coste to keep Bako? Coste is no ultimate prize really, but I would rather him than Bako.

Please God, no. This means that Bruntlett is probably the first righty bat off the bench.

He should have never taken that overrated pile of trash we have at 1B…then there wouldn’t be an issue about Sandoval not making it to the ASG.

overrated pile of trash? you’re a fool…
say what you want about ryno, but he’s third in the NL in RBI…oh yea, a year after leading the league in HR and RBI.
the overrated pile of trash is you, phil- and your posts.

Unfortunately, we’re stuck with Bako now. Coste was placed on waivers a little while ago, and Houston claimed him.

its true

WOW now this is a hideous move. Bako is not a major leaguer and neither is bruntlett. Coaste at least hit his weight.
WOWWOWOW how does this happen?
So if ruiz gets hurt we have Paul Fing Bako????
something has to give. Or if they thought hed clear waivers and the stros scooped him. Someone needs to be fired. Why isnt this bruntlett or bako? OK i am ready to rant now this needs its own thread

Youre really that mad about this/ Chris Coste SUCKS. HE was sitting there as a RH bench bat for weeks with almost NO pt. what did you expect? Bako is a way better defensive catcher than Coste, but a hideous hitter.

If we trade Marson, I’d give Amaro a nod towards Dumbest Moves of the Year award.

Does anybody actually watch the games? Bako has already started 5 games and is in the lineup tonight and Coste hasn’t been behind the plate since June 17th. Maybe something happened between the pitching staff and Coste and they did not want him behind the plate anymore.

“Now, about Coste: You could see this coming. Coste hadn’t started a game behind the plate since June 17, and when Paul Bako, a superior defensive catcher, was called up last month, it seemed Coste’s long-term role would be as a right-handed pinch-hitter. He didn’t exactly thrive in that role, going 1-for-14 with six strikeouts and one RBI, and when Manuel used Eric Bruntlett instead of Coste in the seventh inning Tuesday night, I interpreted it as a scathing indictment of his faith in Coste off the bench.” via ScottLauber http://blogs.delawareonline.com/philledin

i watch them all and know that bako sucks. But maybe you are right.
Coste at least could get a hit. Bruntlett and Bako can not.
We have a catcher for every inning of the playoffs. His name is carlos ruiz. Id rather have coste on the bench than backo.
No like I said someone talk some sense. And you have. If the old man said is OK then so be it.

I think that there is more too this, too… I think that Coste had a falling out with someone because the Bako move didn’t make sense, him not getting AB’s didn’t make sense and this doesn’t make much sense.
Does that mean that Mayberry is here to stay?

Come October, if the Phillies are on the road for games 1 & 2 for the WS then they have no one to blame but themselves (poor NL pitching aside). I don’t like the idea of home field being decided by the all-star game, but it will be a kick having those 5 in St. Louis knowing they are playing to host the Series opener. Regardless, not having home field advantage last year worked out!
Also, I just read Erin Andrews was hit by a foul ball at the Mets game last night. Just another reason to hate the Mets!

If we need a backup catcher, then why not bring Marson up now. He proved that he can play and hit. Bako isn’t going to suddenly improve because Coste is now out of the picture. I’m hoping this is the start of something good as we head to the trading deadline. I’ll stick to my previous comment, if Amaro messes this up, he’ll be up for Idiot of the Year.

Don’t trade Marson now… call him up for September and October! He’s starting to hit the ball well now and could be a good RH bench player later this season.

I love how is calls Ryan Howard a piece of trash. This is a man that single handed pulled us into the playoffs last year. This is a man that has hit more homers the fastest in the majors. This is a man that won a Rookie of the Year award then a MVP award. This is a man that has a ring around his finger. This is a man that lost a ton of weight and learned how to play first base. Have you seen his approvment this year at the bag. Night and day from years past. Yes Howard strikes out and yes he can swing at bad pitches. Did you notice he stopped hitting homers when Raul got hurt. He had no protection in the lineup which will change tonight. He has been hitting the ball very hard. He gets crappy pitches to hit. Outside of Albert or even Gonzo this is the man I want on my team. He is a great player, a great person and a fan fav. Shut up and let him do his job. Sorry for ranting guys.

Coste called some really dumb pitches in the late inning in early June. Two or thee if I remember correctly. an 0-2 fastball to Barajas was one. Great story, but it’s a business. The mistake was trading paulino for trash-ster

I dont want homefield advantage for the world series to be honest. i do not like the system 2-3-2. if you can split the first two games, you then have home field. in other sports where it is 2-2-1-1-1 that is a different story. i like the idea of having those 3 games in row at home, and it worked out last year.
